@buffylovesfaith asked btvs + 2. Talk about your least favorite character, without mindlessly bashing them. I want to see actual reasons.
captain cardboard - my real least favorite character would probably be warren or caleb. you know, the grossly evil men with literally no redeeming qualities. but the narrative is set up in such a way that you’re not supposed to like them. so i choose to talk about riley based on the fact that he’s a main character and we’re supposed to be able to identify with him in some way.
one of my major gripes with riley is that he so obviously there to be buffy’s Normal Boyfriend™. he’s the safe secure guy she can fall back on after the melodrama with angel. but, because he’s a rebound, a placeholder, the writers never fleshed him out enough. but then they give him a major stake in the big bad of s4 and we’re supposed to be compelled by his moral dilemma...but i’m mostly not invested because i don’t know who he is as a character.
okay, so let me go into a little more detail about his unfleshy character. something things i would have liked to know about riley that the show only half addressed include:
was he really a grad student? or was that just his cover story so he could be on campus where the initiative was?
did he already have a psych degree and that’s why the initiative was interested in him?
HOW DID HE NOT REALIZE HE HAD SUPER STRENGTH??
why did he not really react to that breech of his consent?
why is he a not-ask-questions kind of guy? what gave him that mindset? (if i’d have known more about why he was the way he was when we met him, i might have been more interested in his struggle between rebellious buff and loyalty to the initiative)
what drew him to the military to begin with?
what the fuck was up with his relationship with maggie?
just...anything about his backstory that wasn’t I’m from Iowa would have been nice.
then, once we get to season 5, my annoyances are less with the writers’ lack of attention to detail and more with his inability to deal with buffy’s emotional strength. like. on a superficial level, his insecurities aren’t even impossible to identify with. i get feeling lesser in an unbalanced relationship. but instead of moping about it all the time maybe express yourself to buffy?? i know that’d put him in an even more vulnerable place, but fucking communication is still important. ugh.
it doesn’t help that my bias will always be in buffy’s favor. i Love her. and the fact that he couldn’t compartmentalize and be there for her -- the way she needed him to be there for her, not letting his own issues get in the way -- will always make me a little bitter. my instinct is always to protect buffy, so. sorry cardboard. you just can’t compete.

CONDITIONALITY There appear to be no restrictions on his power, though it is assumed that if one were to determine the medium through which he communicates with cardboard, it may be possible to interfere with his powers. Furthermore, his powers do not help if cardboard is not present, though it appears cardboard can "hear" him from any distance and will try to come to his aid if needed.
