Hug
You knock on the door and hear the muffled “Come in,” from the other side. Quietly, because you do everything quietly, you slip into the room to see Captain Jack Harkness right there - feet away...and yet you feel a million miles away from all humanity. Maybe it’s a good thing Jack isn’t exactly human.
You stand there, just inside the room watching him as he packs, shuffling weapons and vials of things you could name but would rather not.
You know those hands,, those eyes, that jawline, that chest. He only glances at you when you first entered, focused on his task and you wonder if he forgot about you, something so many others have done.
“Jack,” you say softly.
“Yeah?” he replies instantly, stuffing an extra shirt into the bag.
“I need a hug.”
Four words. Not the typical three words that are shared between couples but they show a vulnerability that give it just as much meaning as those words. Perhaps even more meaningful, because there weren’t countless songs using these words, nor were they used in passing or as a goodbye.
The last word slips from your lips and Jack turns immediately toward you. He sees you standing there, so small compared to him, and doesn’t hesitate. Silently he strides toward you before wrapping his arms around you. He pulls your head against his chest as he squeezes you gently, your arms around him as well now, under the ever-present coat. Your world shrinks to the feel of his pressed shirt against your cheek, the smell of soap and aftershave, the sound of his heartbeat in your ear. He breathes out softly over your hair and skin. You stand there enveloped in his arms and the weight in your chest lifts a little.
