Sometimes, Spotify hits the nail on the head. I don’t know what I was listening to that led them to recommend Colleen to me (not to be confused with Colleen Green...), but this album fits right into the sound that I like.  A little bit minimal, folksy, with airy vocals and interesting syncopated rhythms.

This reminds me a little bit of a Canadian artist I was obsessed with some time ago, Sea Oleena. But this has much more of a folksy vibe.

So far, this week is panning out to be pretty decently productive, if not also super-busy. I’m looking forward to taking some much-needed chill time this weekend, as I feel like I did not quite get enough over the Winter Break. 🍸

I’ll be finishing up my Poster Presentation for my program’s annual Research Symposium some time mid-next week, I’m estimating, and then I’ll be able to truly focus more on my coursework and wrapping up my second rotation strong. 👍

Ahhhh, it’s good to be chilling in my apartment, enjoying the pitter-patter sound of the rain from within the warmth and comfort of my bed. 😌

I’ve got quite a few chores to do, as well as catch up on the fMRI Data Analysis I’ve been working on at the lab, and use it to put together my required Symposium Poster Presentation for our January Symposium. I have yet to write an abstract, although I better knock that out sooner rather than later so I can move on to the main task at-hand (that is, making my research sound much more exciting than it actually is 😳)

GoooOooOoooOooooood Morning, Tumblr!! 🌞

Today is going to be one hell of a busy day: cleaning up around my apartment, hittin’ the gym, meeting with my next Rotation PI/ Boss-person, then attending a fancy-shmancy talk on the remote Medical School/ Health Sciences campus before returning to my apartment to get everything ready for my baby’s arrival this evening! I’m very much looking forward to a chill, uneventful and relaxing weekend before getting ready to head back home once again for Thanksgiving (which, I sincerely hope, will also be super-sweet and awesome and relaxing and romantic).

Deux ans après The Weighing Of The Heart, paru sur le label anglais Second Language Music, Collee npoursuit son exploration musicale chez les américains de Thrill Jockey, avec Captain Of None. Derrière ce nom qui sort de l’ordinaire se cache le cinquième album de l’auteure, compositrice et interprète Cécile Schott a.k.a Colleen.

Captain of None, qui revêt désormais un habillage électronique jusqu'au-boutiste, détonne dans l'œuvre de la française. Colleen y revendique des influences inédites : celle de la musique jamaïcaine des années 70 et en particulier le style dub de Lee Scratch Perry. Colleen évoque également le style hybride, entre pop et musique contemporaine, du violonniste new-yorkais Arthur Russell.

Connu pour ses dons de multi-instrumentaliste, Colleen systématise ici l'utilisation de l’oversampling et dudelay, dans la tradition dub jamaïcaine, mais donne à sa musique une teinte plus organique grâce à l'apport de la viole de gambe et d'une instrumentation toujours extrêmement riche (percussions, melodica...etc.). Dès les premières notes de l’album, sur Holding Horses, nous voilà bercé au son d'une electronica pleine de suprenantes anfractuosités et rythmée par des arpèges réverbérés, intenses et mélodieux. Lighthouse et Soul Alphabet, s'ils paraissent plus synthétiques, explorent de même les échos allègres de la viole, qui se trouvent distillés tout au long des deux morceaux.

La musicienne enrichit les textures fluides de ses compositions par la présence de son chant, sur la pop I'm Kin par exemple. Eclipse libère une aura plus mélancolique, tant la voix n’est plus qu’un écho lointain fondu dans la réverb, avant de revenir dans un crescendo sur Captain Of None, dernière track de l’album. Colleen y délivre une musique diffractée entre immédiateté pop et tourbillons psychédéliques, clôturant cet opus sur une note vive qui s’éteint progressivement.

La track This Hammer Breaks tient une place particulière dans Captain Of None tant l’artiste pousse l’abstraction à son paroxysme. Avec une mélodie faite de percussion à l’allure bruitiste, les harmonies sont distordues dans une constellation de féquences, créant un rythme obsédant, à la limite du binaire, qui détonne même chez quelqu’un de son acabit. Une surprise qui dit toute l'inventivité et la pertinence de la musique de Colleen.
