Was making a vegetable lasagna last night for the family and couldn’t help myself letting off a few verses of Captain Vegetable. And I gotta wonder just how much Sesame Street affected me. Take vegetables for instance. I wasn’t overly fussed on them and no one could convince me otherwise. Like, yeah, I’m not going to eat vegetables because Cookie Monster sold out and rapped ‘Healthy Foods’ in some kinda 90′s acid flashback.
But I couldn’t help but get behind a giant goofball dressed like a super-rabbit singing, off-key, about how brilliant vegetables are to kids who think their brain is melting.
They know this is dumb as fuck. You know it’s dumb as fuck. They know you know. You know they know. So let’s just get fucking goofy with this and eat our vegetables.
And it makes me wonder how much of this stuff we downed brain-wise because they winked knowingly while teaching the essentials. Also, are kids these days are getting the same semi-sarcastic vibe from their Sesame Street? I hope so. Especially after seeing John Leguizamo make it through the reboot of Captain Vegetable, occasionally catching his haunted glimpse into the distance questioning what the fuck is going on while plowing through the song.
How important was that semi-sarcastic nod-to-camera in our goggle-box education?
