Is it the lack of hair selection? Because I was hoping for more, but at least there aren't like fifty variations of bald.

It’s several things. 

it should be noted first that it’s not all bad of course, and there are places where it takes steps forward, and some of those steps forward in particular are really important. hair looks better, less helmet-y and less plastic-y. it moves somewhat. in general, graphically speaking things are better (as you might expect from a more recent game). there’s a better range of color options for things like hair and eyes. outer and inner color for eyes being selectable is a plus, and makeup looks better. it’s good that some method of face-sharing returns. lighting looks alright. no genderlock on makeup and tattoos being in there is awesome. it’s good that there’s some hair options for SisRyder that suggest good length, and some full ponytails. it looks easier to quickly create a nice-looking character. and as you say, it’s good that there aren’t six variations of baldness/buzzcuts. more importantly, it’s great that every preset is a face scan of a real person (and that these real people were of different races) as opposed to only the defaults, or only the male default/white male default. it looks like we can finally create decent-looking Asian characters, as another example, which is also good.

it should also be noted that I’m aware that Gamble said they’re investigating the CC and asked fans what they’d like to see (tweet him your feedback folks! nicely), and that I know that BioWare have also apparently said that they are planning on adding more options post-release in a patch. both of those things are good. I was originally concerned about the redness/freshness of the scar options, but Ian clarified you can reduce that right down by turning down the opacity (good). I also want to stress that I know that CCs aren’t BioWare’s strong point - I don’t think I had unreasonably high or unrealistic expectations.

some things which are let-downs we already knew. no body customization/sliders, can’t edit the default Ryders, can’t edit Ryder once in game, etc. still disappointing nonetheless. other disappointing things were misinformation based on misunderstandings of dev comments, like how it transpires that hairstyles actually are genderlocked (Ian having clarified that that wasn’t what he was referring to in his tweet). again, still disappointing nonetheless.

now for the bad stuff.. and this bums me out, because I really don’t enjoy being BioWare critical. genderlocked hair is really disappointing, especially after DA:I. there’s a significant lack of hair options in terms of wavy hair, afro-textured hair, hair for people of different ethnicities, etc. it pretty much looks like there’s one for SisRyder (the braids) and two for BroRyder. that’s not good enough. this next bit feels nitpicky and I understand there’s limitations of the engine to consider, but I counted five bob styles for SisRyder. five bobs?? maybe six. it’s better than five buzzcuts, but still. there are two options, or only one really, if you were looking for a pixie-cut style of short hair for SisRyder. why can’t I have hair akin to Cora’s? then there’s some fairly basic stuff the CC is just plain lacking in, like freckles (complexions in general really), sliders like eye slant, neck thickness, nose bridge height/curve (ski slope nose vs hawk nose and things in-between), nose broken-ness, and scar placement control. I don’t think I saw an option to edit ears? it’s hardly the end of the world of course, but since I’m discussing this in-depth, there doesn’t look to be a super-pale skin color option that would suit a pale redhead. what’s with some of the facial hair options? where’s the real beards? facial hair looks sprayed on. why can’t I change facial hair color to something different than hair color? And there are those options in makeup, scars, tattoos that are just.. completely wacky. I get that they’re optional, that we’re non-military and that it’s the future and all, but I’m just looking at some of them like ??? we can now look like clowns, that we got twatted in the face with honeycomb, that we fell off our bikes and skited our face along the ground, or like an ex gangmember/escaped convict. that’s… swell, I guess????

and for what’s super disappointing.. and I understand why, as Ian explained that with each preset being based on a completely different scanned head, so aspects of facial structure (like eye shape) vary between them - but the downside of this means that they’re tied to them. we can’t pick eye shape, nose shape, mouth shape.. not even different eyebrow styles?? eyebrows dramatically alter the overall look of a face. that’s… super bad. I could live without the “basic lacking stuff” listed up there (eye slant, nose bridge height, etc) and without Inquistion’s 2 axes-style sliders, if I could at least pick between different shapes for eyes, nose, mouth. not being able to do so is very limiting, very basic. in ME1 we could pick different shapes for eyes, nose, eyebrows and mouth for Shepard. in this regard they’ve taken a massive step backwards. it’s been five years since ME3. CC is never BW’s forte, but it’s been five years. in a game all about and with such focus on choice and customization.. yeah, I expect better. I’m trying to be balanced and fair but.. they should have done better.

Captain-Dangerous I am a terrible friend okay?

I am... just now starting your Christmas present. Because of multiple reasons that I will just... sum up as "Juliann was hella busy and easily frustrated and at one point almost chucked it all out into the busy street a la her dad."

But somehow I finally made sense of it all and I'm starting it and I will probably finish it in the next few days.
