I watched Wrath of Khan last night and the only reason I can think of for why they killed David in the next movie is to add onto Kirk's story line of Carol telling Kirk to stay away and stuff. I mean, yeah, it's horrible that David died, but it gave Kirk a reason to keep going and I'm guessing it probably made him regret the time lost with his son.
