Lol if I owned every animal in my “mine” tag I’d own Creed, Rogue, at least half of Apollo’s littermates, the entire f litter, Apollo’s mother, Apollo’s father, at least two of my mentors dogs, several service dogs, and quite a few eagles, falcons, and other birds.
But alas it is only my general photography tag.
How easy/difficult is it to get involved in Standard Poodles? From what you have experienced from breeders/personalities involved in the breed?
Alright, well keep in mind that my experience is mostly with... not off standard breeders, exactly, but non-traditional breeders. None of them dock (which is off standard for AKC but whatevs) so they don’t show in AKC, thought most of their dogs are titled.
Most of the breeders I’ve spoken to at shows are really not my cup of tea, to be honest. They look down at working lines, are very snobby, and say things like the immortal “my dogs can hunt. they’re birdy and they have soft mouths.” One actually even recommended docking Apollo’s tail at four-six months once.
There are, of course, exceptions to this and I have met some really nice breeders at AKC shows.
But how I got involved with standards was... I started volunteering at APAW, mentioned I was interested in breeding/genetics and then the founder/lead trainer (/my mentor) put me in touch with the other breeders I talk to and helped me learn about the breed.
So maybe find a breeder you really like and email them to see if they need any help around their kennel/breeding operation and see where that takes you.
I am so sorry for your loss, Raven was a stunning creature and she was lucky to have you. My thoughts are with you and I hope your pain eases soon.
I was doubly lucky to have her. That little black pound puppy furiously wagging her tail gave me years of love and joy. She was perfect.

I can't remember if it was you or not, but someone shared some info the other day on flea medicine for dogs that was safe to use around cats and I can't remember all of the details on it. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

While you NEVER want to use any dog flea preventatives on a cat anyway, a good rule of thumb is that topical flea preventatives for dogs which kill ticks are especially toxic and can poison cats even from secondhand exposure (i.e. the cat is exposed by interacting with a dog with a recently applied topical). For example, for K9 Advantix II it’s recommended that all dogs be kept away from cats for the first 24 hours after applying the topical to minimize the risk of accidental poisoning. Currently, there’s very few preventatives for cats that also include tick prevention because many of the ingredients used for that purpose in dog preventatives are toxic to them.
If you have both dogs and cats, your best bet is to either avoid topicals with tick prevention in them, or choose something other than a topical as a preventative. Seresto collars are safe and effective for both dogs and cats. With an oral treatment like Nexgard or Bravecto, there’s no chance of accidental exposure after giving it to your dog, so that’s also a very safe option.
