Kinnikuman Muscle Grand Prix MAX
never played | want to play | terrible | boring | okay | good | great | a favorite
Technically, I’ve never played grand prix max, but i have played its update MUSCLE GRAND PRIX 2 quite a lot. the only difference between versions is characters, balance updates, stages and whether they have a story mode or not.
I actually played it before i got into kinnikuman and i liked it a lot for its massive roster of weird characters and special moves, plus i like the niche game style of wrestling themed fighting games. Saturday night slam masters is the only other one i know of. I’m also a fan of how it has 2 different kinds of parries (one for grabs and one for melee) since it makes defense mainly about trying to figure out what the other character is about to throw out.
Now that I’ve actually read kinnikuman i can also enjoy it for all the cool matchups that weren't in the series that you can do and how absolutely anal it gets about specific special moves. For example one of Ramenman’s special moves is a recreation of most of his first fight, robin mask has a set of specials that come from 1 specific fight in the series and never show up again, and a bunch of characters have extra special moves that you can only do as counters to specific other specials to recreate series moments. Like Buffaloman can do the reverse kinnikubuster if Suguru uses kinnikubuster on him
My only real complaints about the game are that you kind of have to memorise the inputs for a lot of characters just because they have so many specials (Suguru’s moveset is fucking giant), a couple of characters feel too powerful and I’ve got no one to bloody play it against
