I once watched a person on my campus argue to the pro-life protestors that abortion is completely fine because a fetus doesn’t have a personality. Thoughts on this (fucking dumb) take?

Do you think canon Light is truly capable of love? (Specifically romantic love?)

Yes, absolutely.

Most of the argument people have for Light not being able to love is the misconception that canon!Light doesn’t love at all and that….  is demonstrably not true. Though the anime does its damnest to retcon it out of the story, manga!Light loves his family above all else (laid out in more detail here and here).  There’s a line between “doesn’t have a lot of people he is close to due to context” and “is literally incapable of loving” and Light is definitely the former.

That he doesn’t fall in love in canon isn’t exactly shocking when you consider that he’s a) kind of busy being on the run from the law b) in a relationship with an extremely jealous person and c) working three full time jobs at once by the time of the timeskip, leaving effectively zero time for a personal life.

Even if Light were a less emotionally secluded person, it’d be less than surprising that he doesn’t exactly find the love of his life in these conditions.

Of course, Light being Light, there is also the difficulty of his intellectual prowess and according reputation isolating him from other humans. For one, he’s being put on a pedestal by the people around him, rather than treated as an equal. And then, resulting from this, it is harder to relate to other people. Not being treated as equal means that seeing others as your equal is also harder. Light doesn’t have an easy time truly connecting, but for understandable reasons.

Does that mean Light could only fall in love with extraordinary people? No, I don’t think so! For a platonic example, he and Sayu get along splendidly and have a lot of fun together (look at them banter!) even despite being intellectually completely different. They simply connect on other levels. 

What Light needs is really just a context that actually lends itself to getting to know someone and forging bonds. Time together that isn’t extreme stress, common interests, all those good little things. There are many ways to build a genuine connection and canon lends itself to exactly none of those.

Death Note isn’t a love-conductive story, but that doesn’t mean Light can’t love.

A previous anon mentioned "God of the Gaps." What is that?

By my understanding, it usually pertains to evolution vs. the Bible, but on a broader scale it is the idea that gaps in science are the only evidence for the existence of God.

The problem with that is that you are basing the existence of God on a lack of evidence, rather than on supporting evidence. Basing reason on a lack of evidence results in jumping to conclusion, and therefore we cannot rest theories solely on the absence of proof to the contrary.

I believe that there is ample supporting evidence in favor of all that the Bible claims, and therefore, I would fully disagree with the claim that God is only a “God of the gaps”.

So, I'm a bit new to all this. Who is Kopa?? Your tag doesn't make it entirely clear.

Kopa is this fan character that got published by an over seas company. He’s only semi-canon to the movie and has never been used in Disney media outside of overseas german story books. The combination of “Zira killed Kopa” and kati-kopa’s comics called Hidden Stories has the newbie fans treating him like Lion Jesus. These make for a perfect storm of why people pissed and moaned about The Lion Guard being started, disregarding the fact that 1) Kopa is only ever found in book media( “Fight for the throne”, “A new friend”, and what fans call TLK6NA(six new adventures) the original chapter books that he first appeared in) and 2) He’s not exactly canon to the films. None of the cubs seen in over seas comics are used in Disney media except for once in their comics or books.

someone will one day.  you just gotta love back and abandon all ego. If you’re religious, you have to see the world through God. God gave me Bill as His ultimate gift and expression of love. I know God is always there for me because He gave me Bill. The love I feel with Bill is the purest form of love in the world. I can’t describe it. Its like the love of a best friend, a lover, and also the love of God wrapped all into one. Its a dynamic love- it makes you want to grow and be better. It makes you want to start a family one day. It makes you want to reach out towards the sun and the moon and all the stars without fear of being burned because you know God is there protecting you. Its so right.

OC friends? Sounds fun! I present to you Marcel Trevelyan. He's a giant bear of a man with the fluffiest beard in town. Marcel grew up in the circle, so he doesn't really care what race someone is. They are all the same to him. A devout Andrastian, he takes it upon himself to help as many people as he can. Marcel is really quite gentle and easygoing. His favorite thing is to make people laugh and he will try to soothe any situation with a joke. (1/2)

(2/2): Despite all that, Marcel won't open up to just anyone and can get a bit defensive when it comes to certain subjects. (Ie. His family or his noble title.) He also has a strong sense of justice and morality. When it comes to magic, Marcel is a total dork. He's been studying magic and it's intricacies since he was a teen (he's 42 now) and will gladly debate magical theory with anyone.

6/10: If they became friends, I could see it being a really lighthearted, fun friendship in which he tells jokes, she tells stories, and they both ramble on about things they find fascinating. They do have a few big hurdles, however. Marcel might not understand why Avira is so resentful of having manifested as a mage, and Avira might not be willing to open up very much to a noble. There is a good chance that they would be friendly but never close friends.
