Soilder's Lament: The Perfect Storm
"Yes. Come on we’ll move along the north halls and find my men. If they did survive, they will be there. Then we will return to Canterlot and plan a way to stop the influx of enemy forces into our towns." Captain replied simply opening a nearby door cutting down the wolves behind it that where trying to get in. Moonlight followed. The altered pegasus didn’t make it far before he froze at the sight of something that hit him at the very core…
~One Hour earlier in the Manehattan Warzone~
Captain Braveheart picked through the wrecked building with his squadmates Private Sharp and Sergeant Blaze. Their armor was worn from hours of intense combat with random creatures. Braveheart’s red coat was dirt stained and his short, messy black and red hair was oily and singed from one of the many fires that had broken out across the city. The other two were your basic guard ponies but with hearts twice as big as anyone their rank. The tri was searching the large building for survivors to evacuate.
"Careful, the building is unstable it could collapse at any moment…" Brave warned as they traversed the high rise.
"So Captain Obvious, anything else I should know that I can see?" The Sarge asked sarcastically moving somewreckage from a door.
"Yeah! Why am I up here? If this thing falls apart I’m toast! I can fly!" Sharp replied shakily peaking over the half crumbled edge.
"Will you two stop it? We have a job to do!" The Captain scolded in an annoyed tone.
"For what army? How do we know the evacuation post isn’t gone?" Blaze asked. "We were overrun the second the enemy arrived!"
"Would Epic give up?" Braveheart countered. "Would he give up or continue trying to protect the innocent?" The mention of their childhood hero General Epic Tale brought silence to the room. The trio had grown up together and trained together, even shared the same hero. High General Epic Tale, the hero of Equestria who defended the weak and could fight an entire army. They modeled their lives after him.
"Come on." He added continuing into the other room. However he didn’t get far before ground gave from beneath him sending him tumbling down some stories and into unconsciousness.
"Mister. Are you okay? Mister!"
Braveheart woke with a start looking around. Not sure how long he was out, he rubbed his aching head, armor even more battered than it was.
Beside him a small snowwhite filly with red eyes nudged him. “Umm mister are you okay?” She asked tennatively. “You fell pretty far…”
"Huh? Oh hey. Yeah I suppose." He replied awkwardly. Standing slightly unbalanced. "Where are your parents?" This earned him a look that told him not to touch the subject again. "Okay. Come on we need to get out of here."
"But what about the monsters?" The young child asked in protest.
"I’ll protect you okay?" He simply replied wing extended for the filly to climb atop his back. The foal nodded before gingerly climbing on as Captain Braveheart looked out the hole in the building noting with a sad note a problem rising in the distance…
Captain stared out at the sky with a slight tremor in his form. Moonlight came up beside him commenting. “Bright night tonight. Hey bro what’s wrong?”
With a grim look Captain replied, “It’s not a bright night… Those are flares…those flares represent every city lost and with this many…” He stood there a moment in silence. The immense death and loss could be felt as an aura around him. Everything he fought and suffered for hundreds of years was burning. His army had fallen and his people were dying. All he could do was hope that Canterlot held…
The Princess who what the lights were as well. She was ruler of the night and could tell the difference between moonlight, stars and fire. Her expression darkened.
"We need to speed our action," she told the stallions. "This is unacceptable."
She became harsh when nervous. It was a coping mechanism but also a trait a leader must have. There should be no softening in the face of hardship.
