Has Skrtel complained about not being named VC? Why are people making a big deal about this?

He hasn’t and he won’t. He’s not that kind of person.

The issue is with the narrative. There’s this belief that Liverpool football club has been selling for years that the captain’s armband only goes to the best and most capable of our men. It goes to people who have demonstrated their commitment and skill in the squad, and who have some leadership capability. It’s awarded on a merit-based system, so to say. Same with the vice captain position.  What happened with Milner getting the position is a deviation from the narrative. The vice captain position was awarded to someone that had just come into the club, who has barely even played a few minutes for it and only met his teammates a few times, instead of someone who has suffered with us for eight years. It’s a problem because it represents something in conflict with the values this club is trying to present.

With the way the contract negotiations have been handled this summer, this feels like another slap in the face against Škrtel, which is why the people who appreciate him have been reacting with so much emotion, especially once others began to call us irrational for expecting his appointment, even though it fits Liverpool’s narrative. 

That’s why it’s such a big deal for some people. It seems to symbolize another turn from our romantic notions of the club we support.
