Week Fourteen: How Washington can be an amazing place
Exploring
In DC you will be surrounded by Museums, Art Galleries and Historic Buildings. There are 20 Smithsonian museums in DC, and they are all free to enter. Another fun and free thing to do is to walk around the monuments along the National Mall. There are always big events held there ranging from the Cherry Blossom Festival to the 4th of July celebration. I suggest taking advantage of the DC bus tours. They have many drop-off locations and run in intervals of 15 minute pickup times. They’re a good way to see much of DC in a short period of time.
Shopping
Union Station or Chinatown are two locations that have stores bunched together for quick and easy shopping. I recommend Chinatown. It’s home to clothing stores with professional attire in an area near two metros. Also, there are flea markets that happen every weekend year-round. The booths there have food, clothing, jewelry and knick-knacks. Each flea market is a fun place to go shopping for souvenirs for the family. Some booths even pass out free samples, which makes the flea markets a great place to snack and shop.
Eating and Nightlife
The Capitol, like the rest of the United States, is a melting pot of cultures. Delicious food can be found at every corner, whether it’s getting pizza on Capitol Hill at We the Pizza or getting some yummy Fried Rice in Chinatown. Food and fun are the best ways to really experience a city. H Street, Dupont Circle or Claredon in Arlington are all places with tons of restaurants, pubs, bars and clubs with an enjoyable atmosphere. With safe neighborhoods and metro stations located near by, having fun is made easy. Though make sure to check the time the metro stations close that day, or you may have to take a taxi home.
The Washington, DC, area is full of opportunities to develop yourself personally and professionally. The internship should be the number one priority, but it's important to make the most out of the entire experience. Being in America’s capital is exciting, because it’s an adventure with a new way of life. There are many things to do to fill in the time after the 9-6 work schedule. The tricky part is making the decisions on what to see first and what might get left out. Take advantage of the everything DC has to offer in the short time spent here.
