Drunken Texts/Calls {Sentence Starters}

To doctors, and really anyone in the medical field, sleep is considered a luxury. It’s not something they take for granted. Nana never took sleep for granted, and it was rare for her to have the opportunity to sleep in the familiar and comforting warmth of her own bed, rather than the stiff boards that serve as mattresses in the on-call rooms. 

The surgeon was asleep early that night, before ten. It was close to one in the morning when she heard her phone ring, and when it roused her from her peaceful slumber, she was as angry as a bear would be if woken from it’s winter hibernation. She can’t be bothered to open her eyes to the bright light, so instead she throws an arm out and feels around with her hand for the device on her bedside table.

Raising the phone to her ear, she does not offer a kind greeting to her caller.

“Yah, do you have any idea what time it is, it’s rude to call past –” 

A familiar voice that brings a flutter to her chest cuts her short and she regrets her tone immediately. But she could hear the slur in his voice, and his words all fall together in a rush. He’s drunk. 

“Soohyu – ..are you drunk?” 

Are you with a woman? The words almost come falling out, but she bites them back before she embarrasses herself. At least he wouldn’t remember, she reminds herself and then relaxes.

“You want a hug… well. I’m in my bed, and I wouldn’t mind you joining me but I don’t think you should be.. well, leaving wherever you’re at in your state.”

Where are you, who are you with, how much have you had to drink – those thoughts, and some others are at the forefront of her mind but she doesn’t ask. It’s not really her business, is it?

It felt like there were arms wrapped around her body. Squeezing her, constricting her until she had to gasp for air. Those arms were so strong that she couldn’t struggle free no matter how hard she fought to. And there was a voice in her head, and it was telling her to run – run from the fears that were consuming her. Run from this life and start over somewhere new again like she did before.

It felt like the weight of the world was crushing down on her. She was only one person. Just one girl, and somehow she was expected to hold the weight of something so massive up on her own. How did people do it? How did they hold such a weight up alone? 

Why did she come back to this place when she could have had it all back in America. There was so much pain here. Too many memories. She couldn’t walk the halls of the hospital without them haunting her. She tried, God did she ever try to run from the pain of those memories - but the faster she ran, the larger they became. 

She needed to go. She needed to go now, before everything came crashing down. 

But before she could leave, there was one person. One person that she wanted to see.. Just for a moment. Just long enough to remember him – although she doubted she could ever forget him anyway. There were others she owed an explanation too. She was lucky they forgave her the first time but again? She did not deserve their forgiveness again. 

She just wanted to see him again. To see his face one last time before she left for good. She wouldn’t come back this time. But she owed him an apology because she promised… She p r o m i s e d to save the one person in this world that he treasured most, but now she was running away from that promise.

He would hate her for it, and that’d be okay. As long as she could see him one more time and tell him how sorry she is.

And it’s why she’s walking the halls of Seoul National University in search of the classroom he taught in. When she found it, she peeked through the crack in the door and saw him standing at the front of the lecture room alone. There were no students, just him. Seeing him standing there.. It took her breath away.

The doctor slipped inside and then closed the door behind her. It made a sound when it latched and the professor looked up from the stack of papers on a desk. Evidently he was surprised to see her here, because his eyes widen slightly and his lips part to speak her name.

Her name sounded so lovely spoken by his lips.

She couldn’t spend more than a few minutes here or she’d want to stay. So she quickly crosses over to the front of the room where he stood, and he’s immediately concerned by the look on her face. Gone was the confident and fearless doctor he knew, and in her place was just a frightened girl. 

“I have to leave the country.” 

The words rush out before he has a chance to ask her what’s wrong. And then, before he can say or do anything, she embraces him with a slender pair of arms and squeezes him tight. She closes her eyes and breathes through her nose, inhaling his scent so that she’d never forget the smell of him. 

God, she would miss him.. She would miss out on the chance at a future with him, but he deserved someone better than her anyway.

“I’ll… –      I’m really going to miss you.”

She choked on the words she uttered in against his chest, and he closes both arms around her. He doesn’t want her to go. And not because she was responsible for the well-being of little Byunghun – but because he truly would miss her too.
