it’s not often that natasha finds herself lying on her floor with a very much trapped, but very much not deprogrammed, winter soldier. there’s something deeply seated within her, instincts made by the red room, by department x, that almost makes her want to run --- she’s an escaped widow, after all, she shouldn’t want to be anywhere near this man. and yet. . .
well. that’s complicated.
it helps, she thinks, that she’s been defected for long enough that she’s created a safety net for herself. and she knows the man before her better than she knows herself, not that it’s hard to know someone better than she knows herself. natasha’s not sure she’ll ever truly know herself, her memories will always be a mess, and she doesn’t want that for james. not if she can avoid it.
she doesn’t want it for steve, either.
