The village below wasn’t strongly defended against the supernatural. Karen surveyed from the distance when they passed by, her sense keen enough she might as well be standing in the square. Living near a supposed vampire queen, their warding items and protections were trinkets or easily outthought.

“<As a> human?” Ironically she forgot the translation for what she no longer was. She remembered Natasha’s instructions for learning a new language: return to what she knew instead of overthinking it.

“<No. Not to...>” she searched for the right description, “<…an unhealthy place. When I first moved away from home, food was meager until I found employment. Have you? In either life?>”

Such a small think to make note of, but Natasha took note of everything. She offered a nod at the corrected course of that first stumble. Real fluency was to able to improvise, and such was their goal. Doubt, then correcting to the original language so you could complete your thoughts in your second one... This was the birth of fluency.

Natasha nodded again, even if part of her wanted to squirm at the subject. Openness was necessary to nourish a bond, and this was one Natasha was responsible for. Not for the first time, she wondered what the fuck she was doing. "In both."

As always, there was a prolonged minute of silence as Natasha weighed her options, her words. She wasn't an impatient woman, nor an impulsive one. Plus, they were methodical hunters, stealth hunters. The patience to waiting was a skill Karen would need to have.

"Most of the crop went to the owner of the land. I don't remember his name. And when I was turned, I was alone. It took time to learn how to survive."

"It hurts... to move," the kind of pain he only remembered having felt once before, when he woke up in a stretcher following the attack to his unit over a decade ago. However, he felt even weaker now, most likely dehydration as he could see a couple of things attached to his body, giving him fluids and medication. He was also not any younger, despite working out, having been captured and tortured took a toll on his body.

"Six months?" His voice barely above a whisper. The mention of his dog brought tears to his eyes. "And Romeo? is he difficult?" His one-eyed rescued cat. He loved him and Natasha was part of the reason he got one. "I'm so sorry, Nat. I should've been careful, I thought I was.. I didn't... I didn't expect to be ambushed."

"Romeo is very difficult", Natasha confirmed with unbearable fondness. Going from two cats to three and a dog had been an adjustment for all of them, to be sure, but they'd managed. "The four of them are getting along. There's an entire food-stealing scheme going on, I am being outsmarted."

She sighed shakily. Xander. It was him.

"You're here. You're okay. Are you hurting?"

It was an awful place to be, stuck somewhere between understanding of someone else’s situation and the tantrum he wanted to have. Not that James had ever had a tantrum in his life, not since he was a child, but the moment called for it in some part of his mind. Just a little one. Anger, sadness, hate.

This wasn’t what he wanted. And he hated himself no small part for the fact he felt that way at all. His life was so difficult. Beautiful wife, endless riches, a set of staff that would tend to his every need, and power, as much as he wanted to wield.

“So men fall for you for the humor, then?” He asked, words dry as he moved to take the plate from her, grateful for the small kindness. A tilt of his head, a half of a smile. “Too bad I’ve never been one much for a laugh.”

They did, actually. Fall for her humor, that was. Natasha tended to badger, harass and tease until people liked her. It had worked for Clint, for Yelena, for Alexei. Different kinds of love, every one of them, but her sharp tongue and sharper mind had drawn all of them in.

"I don't suppose they fall for yours." Just as dry as his delivery, though she did hope he'd pick up on the fact she meant no harm.

Still, Natasha sipped from her tea with the most innocent look she could muster, topped up her blini with smetana.

"I find it excessive, too." She gestured to the table set for them, enough food to satisfy a small group. Or maybe one Clint. "They are unsure, trying to find their footing with you. Once we have all settled, and they have your preferences figured out, there should be less pomp."

The dense forests of Stria were as promised, Karen’s boots placing exactly where Natasha’s led as they neared the ruined village of Karnstein.

“≪Won’t we be short on food?≫” She practiced her German, one of the many languages Natasha was tudoring. They weren’t the first of their kind to visit the storied lands in hopes of glimpsing one of their few true queens. Humans brave or foolish enough to live in such a gothic place would be scarce and Karen’s youth still demanded larger meals. It will be less of a chore once she aged into average necessity or the survival ability to rely on very little. Austria mountains weren’t all ideal for settling it, but forests and weather didn’t limit queen Carmella’s blood quota.

Certainly fledging bias, but Karen thought Natasha was very queenly. Intelligent, strategic, deadly, but also kind despite her involuntarily weaponized human life and the lonely events of her own transformation. Karen wasn’t reckless enough to challenge Carmilla’s title to her face, if the rumors of her still residing at the castle were even true.

There was familiarity in these freezing temperatures. Now that the cold didn't bother her nearly as much, Natasha had discovered a new appreciation for it. Snow absorbed sound, her own and the environment's, which was well-suited for a predator such as herself.

"<If we stick to the mountains.>" Natasha tossed her response over her shoulder. Winter had meant scarcity, back when she'd been human. They'd labour all year to have enough reserves for the winter; a failing crop could have meant starvation. Now, it brought a new challenge: it sent the prey indoors, or away entirely. Sickly humans were less nutritive, too. "<We will need to go down into the village to hunt. The season makes them venture out less, for shorter amounts of time. We need to be sneakier. Worst case, we'll get by on animals.>"

Not that Natasha would it reach that point. Karen needed to feed, needed healthy blood to thrive. It was a tightrope, to challenge her and allow her to make mistakes and suffer their consequences, without letting those consequences get out of hand.

a pause. and natasha hits the drums — joy rises in his heart, right to the tippy top of him. there’s happiness unspeakable. the sound resonates and blinky blinks in a flicker. he has to cross his arms over his chest to stifle the sight.

“i would never upset you guys with that kind of volume. awful if you’re not the one practicing.”

he knows better than to be that inconsiderate. no, stark thinks about all angles carefully. he tries to be as careful as he can.

he produces that faithful phone, starktech, and the scrolls through until the dulcet tones of a blink182 song begins quietly. the drums kick in, and their steady beat is something constant. i miss you was the sound of his… early college years. (they should’ve been high school, but alas.)

“just ignore the words and listen to the beat. feel it in your gut.”

he kneels beside where she sits, cheerfully battering out a patient tune on the nearest drum within hand’s reach.

“i always wanted a drum kit. you can break it. there are two more.”

he comes prepared for all occasions.

The memory of the last time he saw Natasha was the one he held onto for the time he was away. He didn't remember much aside from being captured, he was certain he completed his job, or at least part of it.

A soft smile curved on his lips, "make sure Dancing Queen is on the playlist," he added. Clearing his throat, he furrowed his eyebrows and nodded his head slowly, "Alexander." Then he took a deep breath which made him groan. He tried to move a little but his side hurt. "How long have you been here? How long was I gone?" He stopped counting after a couple of weeks, drifting off to sleep every other moment during the day with how much he was being beaten unconscious.

Xander stirred, and her hand dropped to brush his shoulder. The control Natasha had over her own body was impeccable, precision in every gesture, having made it the perfect weapon she'd needed it to be. Now, that control manifested in how carefully she touched him, grazes of skin barely more than the stirring of air. It was a fine line, providing comfort without causing further harm to someone so injured, traumatized.

"Stay still." Would he even listen to that? Natasha would have been halfway out the window by then, ass hanging out and all. "Move slowly." She exhaled, long and measured. Still, she didn't beat around the bush. He deserved to know everything. "I just arrived. It's been six months. Auggie's been with me, he's doing great, just a little sad. And your place's taken care of." Hell, there were meals in the freezer. This time, her fingers brushed the back of his hand. "You're okay. We've got you."

Something about the way Natasha is not usually a sadistic person and mostly does things "cleanly", and how that's completely subverted whenever she's dealing with people who've been hurting children or women.

Like, not even in Deadly Origin or Name of the Rose, when she was dealing with people targeting people close to her she was as ruthless as she was in Black Widow 2004 (Sally Anne's rescue) or No Restraints Play.

I'm sure she tells herself it's nothing to do with her own past.

Lois laughed the second that word left Natasha’s mouth because of all people she’s the last she’d expect that from. “Oh gosh, I can’t imagine you seeing such soft memes Nat.” She places her hand over her chest and turns her head to look at her, grin on her lips. “Careful you sound cute.” She speaks as she remembers her brutal reputation. One that certainly doesn’t involve soft things like this. Not that she’d tell anyone. “Okay you’ve persuaded me, I expect a kitten from you before the end of the month.” She nudged her with her arm.

"Just because I kill people doesn't mean I'm not on the internet", she teased. Not to sound old, but Natasha had been on the internet since before it was called as such. Back when it had been a technological wonder from the West, when the English word hacking had just meant chopping away at something. "Tony keeps wanting me to tweet on the official Avengers account."

Natasha sketched a smile. The physical contact of the nudge didn't bother her, bizarrely. "I just might. Like I said, you could use some company."

Bucky used to be so good at playing the room, used to be able to talk his way in and out of things before someone could even bat an eye. That was one of the many parts of himself he had lost when they created the Winter Soldier. Maybe playing Natasha's game would help him find that part of himself again. "I guess you have a point. Maybe I'll see how many times I can bring up fruit in a conversation."

A slight frown formed on Bucky's lips. He would enjoy seeing Natasha in action, but he also appreciated having her by his side. "Games more important than helping an old friend?" he asked before letting out a sigh. "Fine...If you sense a pair of eyes staring into the back of your skull, just know it will probably be me pleading for your help out of an awful conversation."

Natasha shrugged, a dainty little move that would never, in a million years, betrayed how smug she actually was.

"I always have a point."

She would be insufferable, if she wasn't also right.

James did look a little bereft, the poor thing. It was tougher on him, no doubt. His reputation was more widespread, he was more recognizable, he hadn't been free for as long. Not to mention, he had a personality to come back to. Natasha had had free reign to build her own from the ground up.

"You are underestimating how much I get checked out." Again, insufferable, if not accurate. Still, she softened. Only a little bit. "Come find me if you genuinely do feel like murdering someone. Or you could just skip this entirely, you know."
