So, /u/cromonolith on Reddit left the following comment on a post about the worth of a particular Magic card compared to its weight:
The average Magic card weighs 1.814 grams (which I obtained from googling). The price per gram of gold on that site is $42.67, meaning the value of the weight of a Magic card in gold is around $77.40.
Many, many cards are worth more than that.
If a Tarmogoyf is about $140, it's worth nearly twice its weight in gold. Let's say that Black Lotus is around $5000. That means that a single piece of cardboard with some colors on it is worth nearly SIXTY-FIVE TIMES ITS WEIGHT IN GOLD.
And there are people who bought stacks upon stacks of them back in the beginning of the game for a few dollars apiece.
