Custom MtG Destiny Card Day 1: Inspired Thanatonaut

Inspired Thanatonaut Cost: 1WB Creature - Lightbearer Wizard Uncommon Whenever this creature is cast from a graveyard, put a +1/+1 counter on it for each time it has been cast from a graveyard this game. Design notes below!

This was the very first card I made for the set! I knew going into Destiny Universes Beyond a few things:

First, Guardians would have to be the premiere creature type of the set. They're the most iconic part of Destiny and those creatures are gonna be what people would probably be most interested in seeing. However after playing around with the "Guardian" typing for other characters who fall into a more murky area on whether or not they're considered "Guardians," (The Drifter, Savathun, etc.) I switched the typing from "Guardian" to "Lightbearer" since it allows more freedom in terms of what other characters could be represented in the set. The same was true for the three different classes, but I will save that for when I show off the common rarity Lightbearers.

Second, I knew that graveyard recursion would be accessible in the set thanks to Ghosts, which I will also show off at a later point. Since their whole purpose in the video game is to resurrect their guardian, I wanted a Lightbearer card that leaned into that mechanic in card form as well.

In-lore, Thanatonauts are Warlocks who purposefully engage in death in order to explore it and understand it, and I find that concept absolutely fascinating. I knew that going with a Thanatonaut would make for a great interaction with a Ghost token, and I think that the ability of gaining a +1/+1 counter for each time that the creature has come back form the graveyard fits very well flavor wise with the purpose of Thanatonauts. Alternatively, I could see this card drawing cards for each time it's been cast from a graveyard and that working just as well but I think this design is a lot more unique and fun.

Tomorrow I'll be showing off the second card I designed for the set, since that one's a bit more simple but still mechanically interesting. Look out for that!
