Recommend me some card game animes with the vibe of Yu-Gi-Oh 5D's (individual character arcs, not set in a school environment, the protagonists are not classmates, the protagonists get to know each other throughout the journey, and that have characters of different ages playing from children to adults)

Battle Spirits Shonen Gekiha Dan/Battle Spirits Brave

Card Game Isekai involving mostly a cast of teens but some other varied characters (Brave I think is a bit more age varied and the cast is older), both dealing with war, racism, and horror.

Cardfight!! Vanguard overDress/will+Dress

Was a mix of teenagers and young adults, is mostly about a late night fight club of card gamers who get involved in increasingly strange situations, including a fight with another group and then later a former CIA conspiracy.

Divinez does have classmates but it's definitely kids to adults set in a secret tournament.

So take of that what you will.

Yu-Gi-Oh! GO RUSH!!

The protagonist is an aeons old space warrior who teams up with two kids, most of the journey is about their growth as people, not set in school, goes through time and space.

Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS

The main cast is a mix of teenagers and working adults. Only Aoi and Yusaku go to school to each other. School barely factors in. Is not set in a school environment. Is more a digital conspiracy thriller.

Battle Spirits Sword Eyes

A group of 12 chosen heroes of differing age must fight to decide the fate of the world that ultimately becomes a conspiracy against God himself. Much of the journey is learning to understand each other despite being divided between Light and Dark.

Saikyo Ginga Ultimate Zero Battle Spirits

Basically One Piece in Space except they blew all the budget all the rigs of the main character's aces that the villains have basically noone on their side playing. But it is a journey of discovery of differing ages not set in school, in a space ship.

Battle Spirits Double Drive

Two kids (one from a normal world and one from a world where card games are life and death) end up in a world that's slowly dying that's the source of Battle Spirits. I think there's a little kid, plus a sleazy adult thief. They journey on a sand ship to stop the apocalypse.

(I need to watch Duel Masters at some point, in Japanese...)

Why not have it be both family friendly and have a more adult flavor? I mean, it’s not like you have to break any broadcast laws to talk about certain mature topics such as: The idea of friendships fading over time with lack of maintenance, difficulty managing a work-life balance, moving past trauma inflicted by your family (maliciously or not), the monetary burden in pursuing a hobby like Duel Monsters, the ravages of mental illness, etc.

They tend to do that but get through metaphor and obfustication.

There aren't broadcast laws that severe of what I know, but there are nagging moral guardians that don't want certain subjects brought up, and there are foreign broadcast laws regarding the perception (which is why they very rarely bring up money, card games, and in show products).

But the target audience for all these shows are tweens to young teens, so they need to be written for the target audience to be able to ingest, and a lot of what you suggest is BORING.

Also Mental Illness in Japan is perceived as a personal failing, something to be gotten over or buried, or hidden to avoid shaming your family and damaging their social cred.

Also stuff like the work life balance, that requires the company to want to argue for it as the general attitude in Japan is that you work in the name of the company first and foremost.

What about attempted Yu-Gi-Oh killers that don’t try to be multimedia franchises and instead focus fully on the card game aspect? Could they kill Yugioh through the sheer quality of their game?

no.

The only game that's supplanted Yu-Gi-Oh! in Japan is Pokemon. Which. Is a multimedia franchise, and only got over Yu-Gi-Oh! due to its juiced number of shinies and alternative artworks, and arguably COVID.

And Pokemon is in its own league.

If you want to play with Duel Masters or Yu-Gi-Oh!, you need to come in with sauce.

And you need to have a game not designed by some former Magic: The Gathering pro, that's actually designed to work as a narrative vehicle for a TV show.

I think Shadowverse is almost there, but it suffers from insular jargon, where it doesn't explain keyword effects regularly enough, that a lot of the fights get really same-y mentally as a non-player.

If you want to be a big boy, you either need a well executed multimedia franchise, or be like Weiss Schwarz which is the titty boo anime waifu collector game.

If Aniplex wanted a serious card game IP, it needed to invest in a 52 episode TV show where the rules are clearly explained, easy to understand, and not loaded with technical jargon.

Reactions/thoughts to Build Divide ending service?

I have no real feelings on the matter, it always struck me as something of a failed project the moment its first episode had the main actress dryly explain the rules in the most mind numbing way possible.

Most of these "Yu-Gi-Oh! Killers", if they're trying to be a multimedia mix franchise, forget the most important element:

Yu-Gi-Oh! earned its place due to being relatively simple on the core rules and telegenic.

Vanguard and Build Divide suffer from being card games made to be card games, and not card games designed to also be TV shows and comics.

You want to go toe-to-toe with the greats, you need to understand why they succeeded. (Vanguard has survived by essentially being the face of the company that cannot fail, only be failed).

But why would Hikokubo choose the LAST DUEL OF THE ARC to phone it in? Isn’t that exactly the opposite of what you’re supposed to do when there’s a final arc?

Those are almost always were they get phoned in.

I noticed this from nearly any CCG anime:

They start inventing utter clownshit cards and frank bullshit because these kind of Duels almost always turn into spectacle over quality.

I hate to explain this, but honestly people really don't care about how they get cool bosses as long as they get them.

I think it's essentially a 50/50 split between Mystic Bullshit and High Technology.
