His question hung in the air as Eva took a long sip of the tea that Jack had made her. It was his first time testing out this blend. If he were to be honest, he was less a tea person and more a coffee drinker, so the proper brewing of tea was a little beyond him. Eva knew far more and was always the person who would taste test his tea. Make sure it was not too strong, or not too watered down. Make sure the flavor was just right, or that it wasn’t too bitter or sweet.
It was these peaceful moments that reminded him of his humanity. It probably reminded them both of it, but Jack always noticed Eva felt more at home with her previous life. He had guessed it was because she had been a revenant for a far shorter time and had not lost as many of her memories of her human life. He had been at it long enough he had felt some disconnect, especially just after a particularly painful death. Yet moments like this brought him back to that humanity, brought back the memories of when he enjoyed peaceful moments at home.
Eva placing the cup of tea on the bar brought him out of his thoughts and back to the home base. “It’s very good.” She said, then frowned, “A little flat. You might need to brew it longer to bring out the taste. But it’s better than the last batch.”
Jack felt a little relief at that. The previous batch had been devoid of flavor. “I think it’s time for a break.”
“Want me to make some?” Eva asked. Jack nodded and Eva came around the bar then pushed him out from behind and told him to take a seat. He did so and watched as she cleaned up his mess and got to work making her own batch of tea. It didn’t take long for the water to boil, or for her to steep it, and as she did a smile formed on her face.
“It seems I’m making tea for everyone these days.” She mused as she looked at Jack, “Mia and Marleu love tea in the morning. The chamomile-valerian root mix I’ve been making Louis in the evening leaves him out cold for the night. Even Yakumo has asked me to make some to help him relax after training.” She smiled, "But you’re always my favorite to make it for.”
The words made him smile, a hint of red on his cheeks. “I’m glad I haven’t been succeeded by anyone.”
“I admit, Mia’s come close a few times. Mostly because she knows how to make a great batch.” Her tone was teasing, so he played along.
Eva hummed for a second, acting like she was struggling to think of an answer before telling him, “She’s not you.” She giggled and Jack chuckled at the words.
“Well, I’m difficult to compete with.” Was his only statement as gave the cup of tea a light stir, “I hope I’m at the top of your list for a long time.”
“I’m sure you will be.” Eva said, “I wouldn’t be surprised if you were there forever.”
It was one of the few times his stoicism crack, a noticeable ‘oh?’ forming on his mouth. “Forever, huh…” He repeated, as Eva finished with the tea and handed it to him.
“Is that too long?” She asked. Jack lifted the cup to his mouth and took a long sip. He let a hum escape his lips and looked back at Eva, who was looking at him with expectation. Her eyes seemed larger than normal as she waited for his answer. He then smiled and put the cup down, then let his hand rest on hers.
“It’s perfect.” He told her. Forever. For him it was not too long, but also not too short. It was just right.
