POTM - Behind the Shot!

"I See the Light” was our theme this past month, and the winner of our competition has us thinking about where we all find ourselves at this time. We congratulate Welsh street photographer Huw John, for capturing this brilliant image. The layered meaning, stunning light, repetition, and reflection/refraction made us all believers that this shot was a winner. Congratulations, Huw!

We caught up with Huw (at an appropriate distance) to find out more about this photo, which was indeed made during the coronavirus pandemic.

“This shot was taken on Friday, 27 March, in lockdown in the UK, during a 1-hour exercise walk with my son. It was late afternoon and we were walking up the road past a modern-looking church. Being in lockdown, it was closed, but I then noticed the entrance door at the back of the car park, and saw the main cross. I then saw how the yellow afternoon light was creating the shadows and reflections of the cross. It was shot on a 28mm lens, fairly close to the window, and the graphics all just fell into place. The moral of this tale: always carry a camera with you, as you never know what the world will give you.” Divine!
