Cardkind
Randomized Strife Abstratus
Cardkind covers the usage of cards of all kinds as weapons. From the humble common playing cards used in most card games, to enchanted Tarot cards capable of bending both reality and fate itself to their decrees, to stupid trading cards whose main draw are their flashy and interesting art, all these fall under the Cardkind Abstratus
Cardkind can be used in many ways, mostly varying from person to person, and from what they require at the moment. Most, if not all, cards could be used as makeshift throwing weapons, ones that would actually be damaging when thrown hard enough. While this would normally deal little in terms of damage, most Alchemized Cards are sturdier and, strangely enough, sharper than their commercial counterparts. Such that using them as makeshift knives isnβt all that rare.
Tarot and trading cards are used differently, as they would often simply create magical effects or temporary familiars and items for the Player to use. This requires the Player play by the rules however, as all magical decks are automatically shuffled by the Specibus upon entering Strife and any rule that applies to a normal game of the type of playing cards youβre using would apply in battle as well. Except for most that account for an opponent of course.
When using the cards as either projectiles or melee weapons, use Mangrit to determine the power of the throw and Alacrity to determine its accuracy. Tarot cards use either Sagacity or Acumen for magical effects, while most trading cards are not affected by how high or how low a stat is. Except for strategy and Felicity of course.
Specibus Types
Cards could be organized into three types;
Playing: The most common and by far the least interesting type of card based weapons. The common deck of cards fall into this category, as well as any non magical cards the Player might obtain. These cards are the most effective when used as projectile weapons despite their relatively low damage.
Tarot: A classic choice when it comes to cardkind. While the category itself refers to Tarot cards, it also includes any magical cards that does not fall under the Trading Card category. These cards are Randomized, with effects that largely depend on the specific card drawn. Interestingly, how accurate the effects are to the specific card corresponds to how high of a level they are. With low level decks basically materializing the depictions of the Major Arcana, creating weapons from the Minor Arcana, and not caring about their position, while high level decks basically twisting fate with each draw, strengthened and shaped by previous draws, while also being affected by the cardβs position.
Trading: A bold choice for a strife specibus. The category refers to any commercialized deck of cards, ones that have their own unique rules on how to play. These cards are also Randomized and automatically shuffled as their Tarot counterparts, but with an additional clause. The Player must use the cards as if they are playing a game of those same cards. They must follow the rules of that game, slightly modified to better fit within the Strife system, should they cheat, the specibus would lock itself for the rest of the Strife, leaving the Player weaponless. Though tricks such as bending probability and twisting causality or fate and the like are actually fine. The cards mostly do as their description say, summoning monsters, creating items and casting spells.
Examples
Playing Cards
βA common deck of cards that one could find and buy practically everywhere. While most would use them to play games of Poker, Blackjack, Go Fish, or other such inane things, you have learned to use them quite differently.β
Throwing - Type: Esoteric Projectile Weapon - Damage: Low - Attribute: Alacrity - Range: Medium
Features
Sleight of Hand: At any point in time, the Player could summon one of the cards within their Specibus, not just the ones that are a part of this deck, into their hands or sleeves. They could do this even while in the middle of an action, such as a throw. Doing such would allow them to throw cards at a quicker pace, or to do so as a hidden action.
Tarot For Beginners
βA simple deck of Tarot Cards with a small book filled with instructions to use them as well as the cards various meanings. While the narrator is very polite and sweet, to the point of being saccharine even, their explanations are often vague, or even wrong, to the point of being comical. It is quite clear that they donβt know what.β
Type: Randomized Magic Weapon - Damage: Varies from Low to High - Attribute: Felicity - Range: Varies from Melee to Long
Features
Fate Reading: The cards could be used as a method of Augury, the resulting prophecies require an Acumen roll to be interpreted.
Randomized Effect: When in a strife the cards could be drawn one at a time in order to cast spell like effects. Cards of the Minor Arcana would conjure objects whose potency depends on its exact number, with the higher numbers and face cards being the most powerful. The Swords Arcana would create a limited use melee weapon. The Wands Arcana would do the same, but with magical weapons instead. The Cups Arcana would create a cup that would either negate negative effects or grant positive ones. And the Pentacles Arcana would heal the Player for an amount of health. Each card of the Major Arcana have their own unique effect. Any conjured objects would disappear upon the end of the Strife.
So if you had a strife specibus, what weapon would you choose?
Cardkind?
Note: As you probably already know, all Cardkind sets must be bought from the consorts of your land and cannot be crafted, therefore noΒ recipesΒ will be posted!
What Happens In Vegas - Their razor sharp edges give them an amazing attack bonus, but thereβs a 30% chance they explode on you when you use them, so be careful. They also increase the grist and chances of rare grist you get from defeated enemies.
Bicycle Race - Due to their increased acceleration in mid-throw, these cards have a habit of throwing your enemies back when hit, allowing you to toss enemies over cliffs, throw them into other people, or just giving you some space.
Aces High - More for mobility then fighting, these overly large cards are useful for catching a breeze and floating to your next destination! Granted, thereβs something to be said about thwapping an imp in the face with a huge playing card.
Mystiarcana - For a nice change of pace from the usual Cardkind style, this deck of tarot cards can be just the trick! Every card has a different effect, either good or bad, when thrown. Of course you can have just a deck of good effects, but whatβs the fun of that? A favorite of Light heroes everywhere.
Jokers Wild - These cards tend to disappear mid-throw, or zigzag in interesting ways amongst other tricks. Definitely one of the quirkier Cardkind weapons, but once mastered, itβs easy to bamboozle the shit out of your opponents.
