Wined Wednesday: Chihuly & El Secreto
What is a secret? Is it a riddle to be figured out? Or maybe something to be shared. One of my favorite riddles is: “What is as graceful and beautiful as a butterfly…as ferocious as the most dangerous predator…and delivers a painful sting with is venomous spines?”. That is from the NOAA website, and is a theme from one of my soon to be published novels. I’ll give you a clue, it’s in the picture shown above.
A favorite wine of mine is a Carmenere produced by El Secreto. Our local wine cellar had this one on stock for quite a while, however they no longer serve it. Maybe we drank it all? Or maybe somebody else figured out the secret. The secret that this wine was so sensational it was taken off the market.
I did a little internet searching and found a wine that is called El Secreto by Viu Manent. This could be the wine, but it is not the same label. I get that labels change with vintage, but this is drastically different. I will need to do some tasting in order to confirm or deny the possibility that it is in fact the El Secreto that I desire.
Now on to the art, until a few days ago I was unaware of Dale Chihuly. It wasn’t until my mom showed me her collection of photos from one of his exhibits in Arizona that I learned about this amazing artist. Which is a bit surprising, because I love glass sculptures and I am a huge fan of art installations. After checking out my mom’s photos, I had to do some research of my own and I was blown away(get it) by the exquisite artistic design and control of these glass structures that Dale Chihuly creates. Click through his gallery and tell me your favorite, I am of course partial to the image above.
Cheers!

I did a thing.
Miguel Torres Cordillera Carmenère Blend 2007
It's been a while since we've covered a wine from Chile and don't quite know why, considering that early on in my discovery of wine, Chilean wines were one of my first loves, which would make sense as I was turned on to wine, in a big way, during the South American insurgence of wine, here in Ontario. Needless, to say, it was great reviewing Miguel Torres' Cordillera De Los Andes Privada Carmenère, 2007. It reminded me of why so many of my early wine explorations laid in Chile. Though the Miguel Torres wine is largely based on Carmenère, it is a red blend, with a breakdown of Carmenère 50%, Merlot 35%, and Petit Verdot at 15%. On colour, the Miguel Torres Cordillera Carmenère Blend 2007 holds a garnet red hue. On the nose, scents of plum, spice, and eucalyptus are present. One the palate, you'll find that this red blend is extremely smooth, with refined tannins and sumptuous fruit structures holding tastes of plum and dark berries, along with dark chocolate. This is a fantastic sipping wine that works well on its own, or paired with your lamb and pork dishes. This wine retails at the LCBO for $19.95. We gave this wine a score of 4.5 out of 5.
