San Francisco people! #CareNotKill

The City Attorney has agreed to meet with disability rights advocates Re: the Sheehan case Thursday, January 29th at 9:30 a.m. in San Francisco’s City Hall.  This case is very important, both because of the implications around police brutality and because of the potential to make the ADA less effective in the long run. 

While the meeting is happening, there will be a protest. You can get more information about the #CareNotKill rally on the facebook event page.

Teresa Sheehan, a woman with schizophrenia living in a group home in San Francisco, recently came across the San Francisco Police Department when her group home called the police to have her transported safely to a mental health facility. At the time, Teresa had been off of medications and was not interested in going to any mental health facility, especially with the police. The police arrive and, of course, find Teresa to be noncompliant with their requests. They leave the room, make a plan in the hallway and come back shooting. They shot Teresa five times.

Two years ago, three off-duty police officers killed Ethan Saylor, a man with Down syndrome. Frankly, I’ve said all I feel that I can say about Saylor.  You can read what I’ve written here.  In short, I believe his death was an act of police brutality for which no one has been willing to hold the three deputies accountable.
