Vocals?
It’s a beautiful, sunny Thursday here in Baltimore… the birds are chirping, the cats are meowing, and the brother just made a bacon, egg, and cheese burger and isn’t sharing!
However, I have a gig on Saturday night and, as of today, I’m taking up the “3 Day Rule” regimen to prepare my voice for the show. As part of this regimen, I will not be eating meat until after the gig on Saturday. (gasp!) I will also not be consuming any dairy or acidic food or drinks. I will be sleeping 10-12 hours a night. I will be drinking 8-10 glasses of water a day. I will not be taking any antihistamines. I will be gargling salt water. I will be drinking Throat Coat tea, I will be avoiding caffeine… oy vey the list goes on!
This “3 Day Rule” is credited to Cari Cole, a celebrity vocal coach out of New York City. I just discovered her website the other day and have been FASCINATED not only by the amazing tips she offers, but by all that I’ve been doing wrong with regard to taking care of my voice.
Apparently it’s bad for your voice to eat late at night — guilty. It’s bad to drink carbonated beverages — guilty. It’s bad to drink orange juice — very guilty. And it’s DEFINITELY bad to talk for extended periods of time — so guilty! After reading and listening to many pieces from her site, I have decided to start taking better care of my health and my voice. There are so many things I could be doing to improve not only my vocal quality but my life, just by following her simple regimens.
Apparently, many of the tips for singers and professional speakers will help with longevity and sustainability. I have many gigs that last for 2, 3, and 4 hours and it can be gruelling. I can’t wait to see how much of a difference vocal healthcare is going to make.
Enjoy your beautiful day because you are a beautiful soul!
Much love and hugs xx
