True to his word, Eric came to her room at about ten o’clock to retrieve her. The others had already left to go station themselves for the big fight, so sneaking her out wouldn’t be such a hassle for them tonight. The motion lights had been disabled and Laura already thought she was in her room for the night, so she only needed to take the window and go from there. Even if someone came upstairs to check on her, it’d be too late for them to stop her going.

“I’m almost ready,” she tells him as she finishes tying up her hair. Going over to her dresser, she quickly scribbles a note detailing where she’d gone. Just in case Laura or someone did come upstairs and found her missing. She didn’t want to worry anyone thinking she’d been taken. Setting it on her bed, she turns to Eric with a small nod. “Okay. I’ll meet you out front.” 

As he leaves to take the stairs, Ronnie walks over to her window and opens it. Climbing out onto the ledge, she carefully starts scaling down the side of the house. By the time she reaches the bottom, Eric is already there waiting for her on the lawn. He takes her hand in his and they start across the front yard to his car. 

Once they’re in the car, a sort of unpleasant feeling bubbles up in her stomach. It was starting to really hit her now, what they were about to do. Ronnie wasn’t second guessing her decision or anything, she still had every intention of helping and protecting her mate. But she did worry. Feeling his hand cover hers on the middle rest, she looks over at him. Eric could sense it, how she was feeling; he always did.

“I’m okay,” she assures him before he can change his mind about this whole thing. “I’m just a little bit nervous is all. I’ve never fought, like, for real… you know? It’s just hitting me that this isn’t fight school with Holly or Alice. This time it really matters.”

His reassurance made her feel a little better. Ronnie trusted him with her life, she just hoped that she could also make sure that nothing bad happened to him. She wasn’t nearly as a good a fighter as he was, but Alice had been teaching her the speed and size advantages. Hopefully all those hours of lessons and practice would pay off. 

“I know, baby.” She smiles a little, leaning over to kiss him briefly on the lips. “Together, right? Together we’re unbeatable.”

Stepping out with him for an after dinner stroll, Ronnie was feeling in the mood for something sweet. There was a little ice cream place that Adrian sometimes took her to near the town square that sold about a billion different flavors. Each time they went, she tried a new kind and today she was thinking the triple peanut butter one.

Eric never needed much convincing as he let her guide him down another street toward the shop. It wasn’t too crowded tonight, so they were in and out of there quick. “Their ice cream is so, so good.” Ronnie was telling him as she ate some off her spoon before offering him a taste with a playful little grin, adding, “I’ll share some of mine if you share yours.” 

As she feeds him a scoop off her spoon though, the mood is soon interrupted by a familiar voice. One from her nightmares. When she turned, she was half hoping the hallucinations were back, but it was really him in the flesh. She tries to remain calm, but she could feel her heart starting to pick up in pace.

“Well, isn’t this fucking cute.” The boy comments, anything but amused by the display he’d just witnessed from the young couple.

“Ramsey…”

The instant his name leaves her mouth, Eric is stepping in front of her protectively, murmuring over his shoulder quietly to her, ❝ i’ll protect you. ❞

Ronnie knew that he would protect her. But her nightmares came back to her, and the thought of him being hurt did little to ease her worries. Eric would die protecting her and that was such a scary thought. His protective stance catches Ramsey’s attention though as he begins to size Eric up. This seems to amuse him, though only very slightly. She didn’t like the way he was looking at her boyfriend, not even a little.

“So this is what you’ve been whoring around with?” He directs at her before returning his gaze to Eric with a twisted sort of smirk as he laughs, adding, “where’s the rest of him?”

Ronnie could practically hear the pounding of Eric’s heart in his chest. The way he spoke about her combined with with the way Ramsey was provoking him, she could tell he was about to lose control of his temper. Taking his hand, she squeezes lightly as she leans forward to quietly murmur to him, “baby, please don’t. Not right now. We don’t know if the others are nearby…”

As if to further try anchoring him, she starts pulling him away from the confrontation, but Ramsey just keeps provoking. “Ignore him, please…” She keeps trying to talk him down. They needed to get out of here now and talk to Joel. Because they knew for sure she was here now.

CARING SENTENCE STARTERS

When the song went away, so did her peace of mind. The hallucinations were back with a vengeance and Ronnie had never felt so physically and mentally exhausted. It was everywhere she looked that she saw them, they wanted to take her away. She couldn’t even really look at Eric right now, her favorite person in the entire world, out of fear that she’d see him as Ramsey or one of the others.

Eventually just confining herself to her guest room, she desperately hoped the song would soon return and lull her back into an easy rest until this was all over. Because right now, both sleep and waking were pure hell without it. 

Exhausted and too easily startled right now, Ronnie jumps when she hears a gentle knock at the door. It creaks open and she pulls the blanket up over her head; hiding from whatever new horror was awaiting her. “Please go away, please don’t hurt me,” she cries quietly, repeating those words over and over like a mantra as if the hallucination or whatever would leave her be. 

But they didn’t, and she felt the presence sink down on the bed beside her. It sent her heart rate soaring, right up until she heard their voice.

❝ nothing’s gonna hurt you. ❞ Seph promises as she tries to comfort her.

Almost cautiously, she slowly pulls the covers away from her face and breathes a little sigh of relief when she finds it actually is just Seph and not her dad or Crystal. But how long would she actually stay Seph? Eric never seemed to stay Eric for very long. 

Looking up at the witch with desperate, pleading eyes, she asks, “What’s happening to me?” A part of her wondered if she was having some sort of a psychotic episode. Like maybe all the stress of late had broken her mind or something like that. She thought she heard someone say something about mental magic earlier, but it was a little bit difficult deciphering between what was real and what wasn’t right now.

“Is Anikaia going to be coming back soon?”

CARING SENTENCE STARTERS

The Leo end game was officially in motion, and they were on a ticking clock. So while Seph worked on tracking down Claire’s hair, Nat spent part of her evening at the library elbow deep in the research. She had very little knowledge of hexes or how they worked, but she was hoping to find something in one of these books to help. Mostly it was just vile stuff about hurting someone, but some of them were helpful resources in dealing with them.

Checking out a couple of different ones for her best friend to look into, she shoots off a quick text for Seph to come pick her up. As she’s leaving the library though, she feels the hairs on the back of her neck stand up. Someone was watching her, she could feel it, and before she could pull her phone out again, the force of something hit her square in the face knocking her to the ground.

Nat could barely even register what was happening before her assailants were dead, and Seph was kneeling down to check on her. “Vampires?” she breathes out, a little winded. As she confirms with a nod, it was an easy guess. Leo had them creeping around all over the damn place. He was desperately trying to weed out the little army they’d built, but the only one losing was him.

“Are you okay?” She asks her friend as her hand came up to her own face. Blood trickled from one side of her nose and her cheek was throbbing from where she’d taken the hit. It was likely bruising already, if it hadn’t already shown up.

❝ i’m fine, let me see your face. ❞ Seph insists.

With a small nod, she doesn’t hesitate before turning her head and letting Seph look over the extent of the damage. She could hear her click her tongue before waving a hand over her cheek. The magic is quick working as the swelling goes down and the pain disappears. Smiling at her friend, she was rather grateful Adam wouldn’t have to see the evidence of tonight’s attack when she told him about it later. 

“Thanks, girl. You always come through.” She tells her with the utmost gratitude as she recollects her books and pushes back to her feet. Looping one arm through hers, she starts to head toward the car. “Now lets make this asshole sorry he ever messed with any of us.”

After that strange phone call with Sadie, Ronnie was anxiously awaiting Eric’s safe return home. Her cousin had sounded sincere enough on the phone, but she still worried about him. She could never be too sure with her old pack, they could be something of a wild card.

When he finally walks through the door with two milkshakes in hand, she leaps off the couch to greet him. As he sets their drinks off to the side, she throws herself into his waiting arms feeling so grateful that he hadn’t come home with any new bruises. Sadie had meant it, this was the proof. “Oh Eric, I was so worried she was gonna tell them anyway, but she’s really gonna help us! You did it, baby!”

❝  nothing’s gonna take you from my side.  ❞  He reminds her, looking immensely proud as he also mention this little victory being a team effort.

Nobody could say he couldn’t protect her now because he’d really come through for her. They’d won over their tracker, who had been one of their biggest threats. They weren’t home free but this bought them more time and she was so thankful for that. It was a small victory, but a victory none the less. Tonight could have gone so much differently if Sadie had gone back to tell the pack her findings. 

Overcome with love for him, she pulls him in for a kiss, deepening it as she gets completely lost in him for a few moments. Then she remembers where they were and how they needed to be careful to not be caught. Smiling mischievously, she leans in to murmur in his ear, “stop sign, 20 minutes.” Pulling away, she gives a little wink as she takes her milkshake; doing the little tease Tabs had taught her with the straw as she slowly backs out of the room.

Small victories were still victories, but she never needed much reason to make love with him.

As music blared around them and drunken bodies swayed to the rhythm, Ronnie wasn’t really feeling it tonight. Even alcohol in all its magical powers didn’t do much to distract her from reality. There was just too much on her mind with her dad and Eric. As much as she wanted and tried to ignore to anxious feeling in her stomach, she couldn’t get what Trina had said to her out of her head.

Sitting by herself while Eric went off to smoke with Micah, she barely even registers Tabs as she takes a seat next to her on the grass. Shaking her head at the offered jell-o shot, she quietly murmurs, “no thanks.”

❝ if you wanna talk, i’m here. ❞  Tabs offers when she seems to pick up on her mood.

A little frown forming, Ronnie hesitates a moment before turning to her friend. They’d had girl talk before, maybe it was time for another one. Maybe she’d have more good advice or wisdom or something. “Tabs?” she starts, looking down at her hands in her lap. “Do you think that Eric being with me puts him in danger?”

It was a stupid question. Of course it did. Their strong feelings for one another often made them do stupid, reckless things and that was never more evident than now with her dad in town. “It’s just… someone said something to me earlier. About us. He’s been doing so much to protect me from my dad because he loves me, but sometimes it scares me. Because I know what my dad’s capable of and if he gets in their way…” 

Shaking her head, she couldn’t go there. Even if she just thought it for a single second, it’d consume her. “I have so much to lose now and I can’t lose him. I just can’t.”

With her father in town now, Ronnie had been taking her training with Holly about ten times more seriously. She was anxious and driven, but most of all, she was angry. They were going to hurt Eric if they got the chance because he would get in the way. Those nightmares had been like a bad omen, she couldn’t let them touch him. She needed to be able to protect him the same way that he protected her.

Unfortunately, her anger was affecting her ability to focus. Ronnie was running more on impulse than anything else, and when Holly swiftly dodged her poorly thought out attack, she lost her balance and fell a little too hard on one leg. Her ankle was throbbing so badly she wanted to cry, but she made herself get back to her feet anyway and continue the lesson. She had to carry on.

After parting ways with Holly, the adrenaline starts to wear off and she’s hit with the full force of it. Hobbling into the kitchen, she finds Laura preparing lunch for the pack. She turns to greet her, but seems to take note of the injury and drops what she’s doing to help Ronnie over to one of the chairs at the table.

❝  let me take a look…  ❞  Laura insists, now in full mom mode.

“It’s not a big deal. Really. I just… hurt it a little bit. It’ll be fine.” She tries to put on a brave face, but Laura was already rolling up the bottom of her pants. The ankle was swollen and red, and she winces with tears prickling her eyes when Laura gently turns it it to see the full extent of the injury. 

If she had to guess, it was probably a sprain. But she didn’t have time for a sprained ankle right now, she needed to keep pushing it with Holly. She was untriggered, it was going to take forever to heal on its own and that’s time she just didn’t have. 

“Please, Laura, I can’t miss any lessons. Please don’t make me sit out for a whole week. I need to be able to protect Eric, I need—” Before she can continue though, the swelling goes down and the pains lessens significantly. Ronnie wasn’t sure what she did, exactly, but it was like the injury had never happened at all. 

Looking to the pack momma, she smiles gently, “thank you.”

CARING SENTENCE STARTERS

With her dad in town on top of other stuff, Ronnie just wanted a night to forget about all of it. To enjoy eighteen for a little bit before she had to face reality once more. That was getting a bit more difficult with all the rules and restrictions being set up for safety. Somehow though, her and Eric always managed. He always came through for her when she most needed some reckless teenage fun.

They wound up at some bonfire party down by the lake with Tabs and Micah. The alcohol was in good supply tonight too, so Ronnie was trying a little bit of everything. Fireball, jell-o shots, tequila, some kinda whipped cream vodka. Someone had even made alcoholic popsicles, which she’d eaten more than a few of. 

It was only when she stood up after that last jell-o shot that she realized just how much she overdid it. The sudden movement made her dizzy and her stomach did a most unpleasant flip; she was going to be sick. Oddly, she didn’t feel much better after the fact.

The whole world seemed to be spinning and out of focus, but she knew it was Eric when she felt a pair of supportive arms come around her. “Everything’s so blurry…” she tells him, her words slightly slurred as he starts guiding her away from the party back to his car. He helps her into the passenger side and clicks her seat belt on, and before she knew it they were back at the house.

She was a bit out of it as he literally carried her up the stairs to her room and settles her into her own bed. 

❝  here, sleep.  ❞ he murmurs softly, pulling the blanket up over her and pressing a kiss to her forehead.

As he starts to retreat to his own room though, her arm shoots out to grab his hand and stop him leaving. “Please don’t go,” she pleads in a small voice, eyes a bit glassy as she gazes up at him. It was risky because they weren’t by themselves in this house, but Ronnie didn’t really care in her drunken state. She wanted to fall asleep in his arms. “Will you sleep in here tonight? I don’t wanna be alone.”

When he gives a little nod without hesitation, she smiles sleepily up at him and scoots over for him to slide in under the covers with her. Shifting, she snuggles up close to him, pressing a soft kiss to his shoulder as she closes her eyes. “I love you,” she murmurs quietly before drifting asleep in his arms.
