So, in Brazilian politics news, governors of three states are currently in risk of impeachment:
Carlos Moisés, from Social Liberal Party, in southern state Santa Catarina: an impeachment process was reopened on July 22nd (2020), for accusation of a crime of responsibility for increasing the salary of state prosecutors through an administrative decision, with the aim of matching the remuneration with that of the Legislative prosecutors, without first having the approval of a bill for it in the Assembly. The process had been requested on December 2019 and archived on January 2020. The salary increase had started being paid in September 2019, but was suspended on May 11, 2020 by the State Court of Auditors, on the grounds that the increase had no legal provision in the Constitution of Santa Catarina. Moisés has until August 5th to provide explanations for the alleged crimes of responsibility.
Wilson Lima, from Social Christian Party, in northern state of Amazonas: impeachment requests were introduced in May, mentioning doctors' dissatisfaction with the lack of ICU beds, individual protection materials for health professionals, and the use of state resources in actions that are not a priority at the moment. The main accusation is of purchase of overpriced equipment, paid to a wine store. The process had been suspended in May but has been allowed to continue now in July. He has until today (July 24th) to present his defense.
Wilson Witzel, from Social Christian Party, in southeastern state of Rio de Janeiro: he’s under investigations for crime of responsibility related to the state’s health sector and diverting funds from field hospitals that are dealing with the covid-19 crisis, which prompted impeachment requests.. He has until July 29th to present his defense.
