DnD - Style Change
So, after a not inconsiderable number of sessions, my Dungeon Master burned out and decided he couldn't run anymore. Fortunately, we had a backup DM. Our cleric is now an NPC, because her player is the new Dungeon Master - the old DM has created a character and will be joining the party at a later session.
Her style is so different! Instead of a grisly series of verbose descriptors, she leaves most of the details up to our imagination and doesn't prompt us to do anything. The lack of railroad tracks is very refreshing, and the whole session was a lot of fun, even if I almost died.
We wandered around in the dungeon for a while (my party's still in the Well of Demons - we're trying to open it up on a pretty flimsy reason, but I'm all for it because my character is pretty mercenary) before finding a room filled with blood. Lots and lots of blood...and some pedistals and such raised above the blood.
The blood turned out to be tainted, so that anyone IN the blood takes poison damage. When somebody gets to the far side of the room (where the goodies are), the gaint bronze minotaur statues activate and proceed to swing their flails around to knock people into the tainted blood.
There were carnage demons in the blood.
Thanks to my Great Leap ability, which lets me jump as though I had a running start from from a standing start, I was the one who went across the room to check out the other side and activated the trap. I was ALSO the one who was on the far side of the room from the cleric, hanging out with two hungry carnage demons, the first one bloodied...
There were phrases like "she slithers off the platform and into the blood," and "there are happy eating sounds."
Fortunately, the warlock managed to kill the one that was eating me, pull me out of the tainted blood, and shove a healing potion down my throat before I died, but it was a close thing, and my rogue temporarily lost her taste for adventure. She'll have it back next session, after a good night's sleep.
