Carnal Spotlight: WEST LIANG playing Lao Wang
WEST LIANG is originally from the San Francisco Bay area, now a Los Angeles-based actor and writer in theatre, television, commercials, and film. Having studied drama with American Conservatory Theatre, Stella Adler Academy, Lisa Robertson, and Upright Citizens Brigade, he recently received an L.A. Weekly Theater Award nomination for ‘Best Actor - Drama’ in THEIR EYES SAW RAIN (CoA), which he also wrote.
Other theatre credits include the world/regional premieres of: TREEFALL (Rogue Machine; L.A. Weekly's 'Top Ten Play,' 2010/11), BINGO WITH THE INDIANS (Rogue Machine; GLAAD Award nomination for 'Best Production,' 2009/10), PORCELAIN (Celebration; 'Best Actor' nominee for Garland's Critics' Choice Award, 2008/09), COWBOY VERSUS SAMURAI (Artists @ Play), CHINESE MASSACRE [Annotated] (Circle X), ROMEO & JULIET (Shakespeare Orange County/Odyssey), CAVE QUEST (East West Players), HotHouse (Pasadena Playhouse), PAINTING IN RED (Playwrights' Arena). For film and television, he has appeared in: CROSSING OVER (w/ Harrison Ford), NINJA APOCALYPSE (2013 Comic-Con premiere), TURNAROUND JAKE (w/ Michael Madsen), INVINCIBLE SCRIPTURE, NASH BRIDGES (W/ Don Johnson), THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL, JON BENJAMIN HAS A VAN, and HOLLYWOOD HEIGHTS. Meanwhile, he's also been seen in national television/print campaigns for: TOYOTA, NIKE, MICROSOFT, SONY, TARGET, and JOHNNIE WALKER. His award-nominated feature film (as writer, producer, actor), SOMEONE I USED TO KNOW, premiered at San Francisco's CAAM International Asian Film Festival in 2012/13, and recently returned from its 18-month circuit of festivals in L.A., N.Y.C., Washington, D.C., Seattle, Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, Houston, Orange County/Anaheim, Vancouver, Yakutsk (Russia), and Berlin.
Currently, he is adapting THE LEGEND OF JANE & JOE for screen, while workshopping MAN PLUS GIRL TIMES WOMAN DIVIDED BY BOY for its stage premiere. When not working, he might be found sipping neat Scotch in a dive bar near Downtown Los Angeles.

Congrats to the team at Carnal Orient for exceeding their funding goal on Kickstarter! Here are features in Asia Pacific Arts, KoreAm Journal, and Angry Asian Man, featuring photos I shot during our podcast recording with the creators, Mila Zuo, Angela Seo, and producer Camille Mana.

Angela Seo of Xiu Xiu posted this URL on her Instagram so I had to check it out. She and two other women, Mila Zuo and Mira Lew, are basically asking for our help to fund a short film they are producing that aims to bring more attention to the harmful stereotypes stamped onto Asian women. The link to donate can be found here.
