CHARACTER BIOGRAPHY:
Benjamin Michael Hanscom was born June 2, 1996 to James Michael Hanscom and Arlene Majorie Tilson Hanscom in Houston, Texas. The family lived a beautiful, happy, joy-filled life. His mother was a homemaker, and his father a General in the US Army, it seemed things couldn’t get better. That was, until his father was killed in combat, leaving Arlene a widow and 9-year-old Ben fatherless. Arlene did her best to make it in Houston, taking on two part-time jobs in an attempt to make ends meet. Through it all, she remained an amazing and wonderful parent, someone Ben could always count on and look up to. Although he’d always been a little heavier than his peers, things only seemed to get worse following his father’s passing. Never having had many friends, Ben turned to food and sweets to fill the gaps in his day, and the holes left in his emotional state.
Try as she might, Arlene simply couldn’t keep their home in Texas together, and the end came when she arrived home from work one evening to find an eviction notice taped across their front door. That night, she phoned her sister- Ben’s Aunt Marie, in Derry, Maine. The next day they worked diligently on packing the house, and by the weekend Arlene had packed the car, rented a moving trailer, and loaded them up, Derry in their sights. Ben put up no fight, not having anything to remain attached to in Houston, especially with his father gone. Part of him even looked forward to the move, and he couldn’t help but to daydream about what kind of adventures Derry might hold. Unfortunately, upon arrival, Ben quickly realized they were just that- daydreams. Derry was even more uninviting than Houson had been, and life with his Aunt and Cousin proved even worse than the struggle they’d faced in Texas. Ben was bullied at home, and he was bullied at school, his only reprieve found in the books he buried his nose in, reading as much as he could and as quickly as he could. He found solace and friendships in the characters he read about, and often found himself daydreaming up situations in which the heroes he read about somehow made their way to Derry, ready to save the day.
Ben also found solace in one other type of daydream- one very different than the ones he’d found in his readings. This reprieve came in the form of Beverly Marsh, a girl from a couple of his classes, and a Derry native. At the tender age of 11, Ben hadn’t ever really described anyone or anything as ‘beautiful’, but that surely changed when it came to Beverly. Although he was certain she had no knowledge of him, or his existence, he couldn’t help but to love her from afar. That was, until she approached him one fateful day, the last day of school before summer vacation, and let him know that perhaps he hadn’t been quite as invisible as he’d always believed himself to be.
Meeting Beverly Marsh changed the course of Ben’s summer, and ultimately his life. Through her, as well as through a few other events propelling the situation forward, he came to meet the rest of the Loser’s Club. And, for the first time in his life, Ben found himself with something he’d yearned so long for- friends. Connection. Companionship. And none of these things was conditional, especially not on his weight and appearance- two things he’d come to be incredibly self-conscious of. Their gang spent what felt like a million summers and school years together, and once again things couldn’t have been better. Even with bullies like the Bowers Gang running around, terrorizing them, Ben couldn’t bring himself to be upset with where is life was. There were the Losers, and there was Beverly Marsh. Although he continued to pine for her, year after year, always convincing himself he’d make his move 'sometime’ and never quite getting up the courage. Then, everything began to change. The Losers grew older, and based on the decisions of their parents, began to move away one-by-one. Ben stayed as long as he could, talking his mother out of her want to leave the small town. Though, Arlene had been saving diligently as the pair lived with her sister, and she’d finally saved enough money for a good down-payment on a home. The only catch? That home was what seemed like 1,000 miles away, in New York.
Ben had never disliked his mother as much as he did the day she officially packed them up and moved them. And although they wrote letters, texted, and called…As is natural, Ben slowly lost contact with his dear, beloved friends. At the age of 17, after a showdown with his school’s track coach, Ben snapped. He began to take his health and weight very seriously, and after over a year of working as hard as he possibly could on losing the weight he wanted and needed to, and by the end of things Ben Hanscom had become what most folkx seemed to describe as 'hot’. Despite his new look and a bit of gained confidence, Ben couldn’t completely let go of the insecure, lonely boy he’d once been. And, no matter how many dates he went on, no matter how many friends he made or parties he went to or people he slept with, he never could quite get Beverly Marsh out of his mind.
Following high school graduation, Ben attended one of the top schools in New York, majoring in Architecture and graduating top of his class. He was went on in pursuit his next degree in Architecture, and everyone said he was 'going places’. Still, it wasn’t enough. Ben couldn’t push his childhood, nor who he was now certain was the love of his life, from his mind. He searched for his friends, and for Beverly Marsh in everyone he came across. Unable to find what he was searching for, Ben began drinking heavily, and soon he was near consumed with booze and just about any sex he could find. Of course, his grades never suffered, however, and he kept his goals in sight, having convinced himself that everything would miraculously change once he graduated and really began his career. That was, until one of the girls he found himself sleeping with frequently contacted him to inform him that in 7 short months, he was going to be a father.
Panicked, Ben weighed his options. He’d missed growing up with a father, and a large part of him never wanted to subject another human being to that misery. However, he reasoned, that things might not be as bad for his own child, especially if they never met him. The mother of his future child was a lovely girl, and one no one would have scoffed at Ben settling down with. And, he was sure that at least some part of her expected just that. But, with everything he’d been feeling and thinking, the emotions he’d been consumed with for years…Ben simply couldn’t bring himself to do it. He couldn’t bring himself to marry her, to stay with her, or to even assist with raising his child. The decision ate away at him, pushing him further towards the bottle, but Benjamin Hanscom did the only thing he could think to do- something he’d been learning to do since turning 17. He ran. Ben stumbled upon the Carnival a few days ago, only two weeks into his laying-low scheme. Attracted by something he couldn’t explain, Ben signed up to join, and to begin learning a variety of small acts in order to contribute, and earn his keep.
