The faint blue glow of the dashboard was the only real light around. Her phone was dead. She wasn’t sure which was worse: the fact that the right front light on the car had handed in its notice, or that its companion on the left was mourning the loss of its partner and blinking the tears away. Either way, driving was impossible in the darkness. The forest at least would have provided some respite from the elements, if said elements had decided to show up - but currently was making itself oh so useful in blocking all but a sliver of moonlight.

None of that mattered.

Looking back at the person sitting in the driver’s seat, Katrina almost didn’t want to move, lest she disturb something in the fabric of the universe and cause this moment to slip away. If she could stand here long enough for moss to grow, for the vines to accept her as a piece of the landscape, she would. To watch her love, asleep on the steering wheel, carabiner glinting in the rare glimmer of the moon, breathe so softly in sleep.

It had been years since Janice Wood had woven her way into Katrina’s heart. She’d come to accept a constant layer of sawdust on their shoes, in return for a calloused hand in hers as they lay at night. She’d watched as Janice - Jan, sometimes - had worn his way through every cap in his collection and patched them up. One for the old ways, she valued good work and earned sweat, and grew her roots into the home she built for them both.

Those backwards caps got swapped out for flat caps in time, though her wiry build remained as brown hair was replaced by greys. They laughed wrinkles into their place, and thought each other more beautiful with every passing day.

Lovers grow together, intertwining fears and futures. Meandering through the calmness, clashing when the river gets fast and life carries them down unbeaten paths. They knock into each other; know that they’re together; fashion improvements through attrition.

Wanderlust was a meal never quite finished. In years gone by, Katrina was the one with the appetite for it. Janice had spent long enough at the same table that now she too found comfort in waking up to see the dear sun rise over the crest of a new hill.

It had happened some time ago. With her hand in Jan’s, head resting against his, and oranges and blues flooding the sky, Katrina found that a new love burst into her heart. It was a sense of being so completely content. Of having the love of her life by her side. She was a version that she never could have imagined loving way back when she first fell, yet feels unequivocally certain about now as they breathe in sync. The everlasting promise of a new dawn, over and over again, spent with dear Janice, brought about a warmth that she would feel for the rest of her days.

it's actually kind of funny to me that we made the ship name carnivorous carpentry while katrina is actually a vegetarian and only eats meat at the ren faire
