On Thursday we completed our first "Way out West" tour for a while. As well as reaching #carregcennen #castle in the far west of the #breconbeaconsnationalpark and #fforestfawrgeopark (having started at Abergavenny at the far east), this tour was also an epic historical tour. Starting with the Neolithic we saw a standing stone at Cwrt y Gollen and a burial chamber at Crickhowell. Moving on to the Iron Age we saw several Iron Aged Forts including views of Crug Hywl at Crickhowell, Twyn y Gaer on Mynydd Illtud and Garn Coch near Bethlehem (the National Park's largest). Then we moved on to the #romans, with the site of the Roman Fort in Abergavenny, views towards Y Gaer camp near Cwmdu, we visited the Brecon Gaer Roman Fort, saw a Roman marker stone in Defynnog church, and had views of Y Pigwn Roman camp near the Usk Reservoir. Fort the Dark Ages we saw the stained glass windows of King Brychan and Saint Illtud in #breconcathedral For the medieval period we briefly visited Abergavenny Castle and Llandovery Castle, with a longer visit to Carreg Cennen Castle and drive by views of Crickhowell, Tretower, Brecon and Trecastle castles. For the more recent past we saw the Hafod military chapel with the Colours from the Zulu War and we saw the Brecon-Monmouthsire Canal.
