why does the town that takes everything take everything? Is it the town itself or the people living in it?
Thank you for asking!
So! Paris, South Carolina is the closest you can get to a ghost town and still have people living in it - there are no surrounding cities, nothing close enough to matter, and there’s basically no signs of life. So, when Carrie Lancing moves there, she’s not exactly excited.
Cue meeting Nova Scott. Nova is the originator of the quote - “Welcome to the town that takes everything” - because no one ever moves to Paris without facing some kind of loss. Nova calls it the community of misplaced things, the ultimate sad town, Mourning, USA. Nova doesn’t talk about the fact that she lives in Paris too, that her family also had a reason to come here, and she definitely never talks about living alone. And, really, no one talks about the ghosts.
There are less than a thousand people in Paris, but more than a thousand mysteries. And Carrie is gonna solve at least one.
