Related to the increasingly large media literacy problem we are facing: I really hate how fandoms do not allow characters to make large, human mistakes anymore.
Making shitty mistakes IS human, and people realize that much at the very least, but some of those mistakes are going to be large. There’s going to be times where you do things that are incredibly shitty towards other people. Looking back on what you did or said will fill you with regret, shame, whatever, you name it. That’s not something that might happen, that will happen
Yet when writers carefully introduce an arc for a character to make any mistake larger than forgetting someone’s birthday, it seems community consensus veers towards that the arc of growth should be dismissed, that because we had a full view of the situation they should be defined by what they did. (Before the willful misreading side of tumblr finds this, no this isn’t about shit like SA).
Honestly it’s discouraging as shit! Especially when the fucking character arc is about outgrowing and healing from abusive environments or learning to cope with mental illness!
