1 - tell us a little bit about what you're sharing.
the transition of summer into fall was always a melancholy equinox for me. growing up in the south, sticky, humid, hot summers were my playground- swimming everyday, walking around with as few clothes on as possible, the hum of cicadas and crickets against a late night sunset. fall meant winter was approaching, and i would have to wait 6 more months to play in the sun. this year, i am in southern california, and the seasonal change is more subtle. but my internal clock knows fall is coming, and the groove is quieter. this playlist is the perfect soundtrack for our seasonal slow down.
2 - seasonal ritual ?
i am creating new rituals in my new home- in tennessee, the piles of orange, red, and yellow leaves inspired many daydreams. for the equinox, i want to acknowledge the sun, perhaps with a sunset hike to watch his descent.
3 - looking forward to …
one of my favorite parts of fall is the produce that is in season- squash, pumpkin, greens and more. i look forward to cooking some seasonal meals with friends.
WEAVING WITH CHRISTY MATSON - www.christymatson.com
1 - tell us a little bit about what you’re sharing.
This is a hand-weaving I made about five years ago on a Jacquard loom. Its a translation of on an ink drawing I made on paper, loosely based on a rotated grid.
2 - seasonal ritual ?
Autumn always feels good and welcome by the end of summer. Its a time for slowing down and returning to long-term endeavors that might have gone on “summer hiatus”. As the days get shorter, I crave more sleep.
3 - looking forward to …
Uninterrupted studio time and a little travel: Mexico in October, Detroit in November, Seattle in December.
EXIT 8 WITH TATUM SHAW - www.tatumshaw.com
1 - tell us a little bit about what you're sharing.
The title is taken from the old highway exit leading to The Golden Isles off the Georgia coast. This series primarily centers around one island in particular, Sea Island, during the wake of the 2008 financial collapse, the island’s subsequent bankruptcy, and my family’s gatherings there towards the end of my grandfather’s life.
2 - seasonal ritual ?
Other than getting a knot in my stomach thinking about the upcoming Northwest rainy season? Cooking. I’m so tired of grilling out and summer sides. I’m ready to make chili and soups and heavy stuff. My other ritual is going to LA for advertising work to escape the clouds.
3 - looking forward to …
All of the movies. Moonlight and Tom Ford’s Nocturnal Animals, in particular. I’m also really looking forward putting out my next photo series from stuff I’ve been shooting over the past 5 years. It’s a moodier and darker than some of my other stuff. Trying to figure out how to best present it. It’s all I think about. I’m obsessed!
4 - where can we find your book ?
Exit 8 is currently only stocked at Ampersand Gallery in Portland and on my website. But ordering from my site is easy and it can be in sunny LA in a couple days!
