Cashiers are not what they used to be.
My total in CVS came to $14,72. I took out a $20 and went through my change for two pennies. As I’m doing that, I see my receipt printing and the til opening.
I hand the cashier $20.02 and she stares at me. She puts the $20 and the pennies in the til then tries to figure out what change to give me.
I swear I could see smoke coming out her ears as she tried to work this out.
First she grabs a $5 then she puts that back and starts counting out singles. I told her, “You give me $5.30″.
She goes “I give you $4.28.”
I told her, “You give me two cents more, $5.30.”
I was waiting for her to take her phone out, but it took a couple of minutes for her to figure out that I was right and she gave me the right change.
If I’m giving you TWO CENTS, how does that translate to giving me a DOLLAR LESS?
That’s the problem with the new POS systems, Because they are so simple (I call it Cashiering for Dummies) that the cashier has no reason to think. Therefore if you do something out of the ordinary, the cashier can’t handle it. Nor do they have the basic cashier smarts to work things out on their own.
Many a time, a cashier has taken out their phone in order to work something out, that they should have been able to do in their head.
I’m not sure if it’s a lack of math skills or cashier skills. Probably a bit of both.
