In this series of works called "Fabrics" Giorgia Di Lello presents her latest Mono-prints: a combination of coloured gauzes, ink and black varnish on paper. These may be common, worn and poor materials, but it has always been the size of their balance that interests her. Additionally, the arrangement of shapes and the colours that can manifest, develop an evocative power and intensity that articulates the shades and nuances. A purity of exposure, a harmony, an arrangement of lines and colours in which the objects are transfigured, entering a world apart.

Jon Long 

‘The artist is void void void void’, 2012

A committed subscriber to Ludwig Wittgenstein's proposal that: "a good and serious philosophical work can be written entirely in the form of jokes" Jon Long’s work addresses issues such as the pitfalls of celebrity culture, the unnecessary pressures put upon children, and the worrying state of a society that allows Jeremy Kyle to not only continue broadcasting, but to continue breathing.

Long believes that making a subject laughable helps us to remove ourselves emotionally from the issue, so that we may view it more objectively. It is also important to Long that he does so in a way that allows a large cross section of the audience to both understand and enjoy the work.

His work includes t-shirt sloganism, painting, and audio pieces. His project for this show is an installation that incorporates all of these elements and is entitled: ‘The artist’s pop-shop is void void void void’.

His hobbies include long walks on the beach and writing about himself in third person.

Virginia Waterhouse

'Desert Music 1 – Begin my Friend'

Desert Music is inspired by Steve Reich’s setting of poems from William Carlos Williams’ collection of the same name. Reich takes fragments of the poems which are as minimalist and abstract as the music, and lays them over intricate driving pulses of sound. The desert of the title, the Alamogordo or White Sands Desert in Nevada where the first A-bomb was exploded, is an unspoken presence haunting the poems. 

The paintings convey the emotional sensation of the whole rather than the parts, while referencing the tones and harmonies and rhythms of the music and/or the images and ideas of the poems. Seven paintings evoke the seven movements of Desert Music. Concentrated inks are poured onto wet paper and swirled and manipulated to create swathes of colour. Dots in contrasting colour combinations dance or tumble across the surface hinting at the melody and the harmonic progression through the movements.

'Notes to self’

Tracy Ward‘s work relates to ideas of memory, the ephemeral and mapping, connecting to a particular time and place. Using natural and man-made materials which often are throw away items seen as having no value but, have a personal association; they are then altered to engage the viewer. Influenced by the Japanese aesthetic of Wabi sabi, which celebrates imperfection and impermanence, She employs sculptural techniques in juxtaposition with methods usually designated as craft; making objects that attempt to question our use of materials, by taking them out of context they can be re-examined without their usual associations, looking at ways to extend or alter the life of objects in our throwaway society.

Rebecca Vincer

'Nice Pair', 2012

Rebecca Vincer cuts fabric into ambiguous anatomical shapes. The soft materiality of fabric and hand-dyed flesh colours used provide linkage to the human body. The sculptures reveal her fascination for abnormal growths and cancer. She is specifically interested by the physiological effect of breast cancer diagnosis, resultant from experience with relatives and friends diagnosis. 

Rebecca attempts to understand treatments, the realisation of decay within, as well as the psychological effects consequent from the removal of cancerous tissue. Rebecca submerges herself into the materiality of the sculptures. From the physical punch of machine sewing to the vigorous act of stuffing them; the process of making is symbolic and cathartic. Rebecca nurses the sacks she makes into different formations dependant on her environment, caring for them as extensions of herself, her relatives and her friends. Rebecca uses a repetitive nature in an effort to comprehend the scale of cancer as well as the physical spreading of cells. In addition, she utilises the cathartic function of complete immersion in creativity, as a form of exorcism to grasp her fear of pending lump discovery.

Through the mediums of painting and drawing, Rosie Vaughan transforms the images she lifts from websites such as Chat roulette and Youtube to express both sympathy and disgust with her subjects. The body of work seeks to question the relationship we have with the Internet, and investigate how the ill-conceived safety of the online space allows both personal and moral boundaries to collapse.
