DROS - Character Playlist Analysis
A while ago, the av-multifangan account published the DROS character playlist, a playlist of 16 songs in a random order, where each of the songs is related to a particular character. However, it’s up to the fans to figure out which song belongs to which character. What a novel concept that I haven’t seen any other fangan do! No I’m not just feigning ignorance of the DRDT playlist just because I can never settle on an interpretation I’m happy with,-
(what the fuck do you do with desk rotation???)
-what are are you talking about?
Voluntary amnesia aside, I thought it’d be neat to try and figure out which songs belong to which characters. I’ll also include a confidence rating judging how certain I am of any given guess, with 10 being outright confirmed (so no one’s getting a 10 lol) and 1 being “I assigned this one pretty much at random.” Let’s go!
Spoilers for DROS up to CH3 Part 3. CWs: Suicidal ideation, hanging, religious imagery (christianity), betrayal, murder, alcoholism, addiction, relapsing, gambling, drowning and sharks, toxic relationships
Gehenna - Aidan Ho
Using a translation by Hannah.
Confidence rating: 6.5/10
That template... talk about a callback, huh? I mean I know of no post which has this template because no other fangan has done this playlist thing (/silly).
Btw I vaguely recognize that a lot of these songs (or the versions in the playlist, rather) have Project Sekai characters on them, right? Is this a secret ploy to get us into proseka? Because I’m already in too many fandoms, I’m not getting into any more!
Gehenna is a peculiar song, where the protagonist makes it very evident they don’t like the life they live.
Yeah, well, it seems like there's no prospect of recovery anymore Don’t ask me anything.
However, they don’t want to die. Not because of some hope that things will get better or anything, but just because it’s instinct for them to stay alive.
I don't know why, but "I want to stay alive" It’s in this Bible called DNA You don't have to hate on your instinct and fears Nothing will ever change, anyway “I want to stay alive” There's no hope ahead, but "I want to stay alive" My instinct thumps in red "I want to stay alive," "I don't want to stay alive" It’s so unfortunate But we have to live
It’s named Gehenna, which for our purposes is just hell (theologists don’t kill me), because the singer talks about life like a suffocating reality they can’t escape, especially since they refuse to die.
The future, jealousy, the sense of failure Wireless, I can't even hang myself […] A pitch dark, clouded and broken heart I disinfect it with alcohol to sleep I become the gloomy water of the big ocean Falling deeper, deeper, deeper, deeper
You can kinda see how this would relate to Aidan based on his FTE, right?
Aidan [CH1, Page 6]: I know other people care, and I can respect that. If they care enough about something to fight for it– even if that thing is as simple as their life– I wouldn’t get in the way of that. Ellis: You think lives are simple…? Aidan: Caring about your life is. Isn’t that, like, basic human instinct or whatever? Ellis: I mean, yeah, I guess. But it’s not so wrong to indulge in your primal instincts, is it? He shrugs. Aidan: If that’s what interests you. Ellis: And what interests you, then? For some reason, I feel like I’ve been hearin’ a whole lot of “no” and not a lot of “yes.” Aidan: Does it really matter…?
I mean, he literally references the idea that staying alive is just human instinct, and somewhat implies he has no interest in indulging in said instinct. That’s quite Gehenna coded if I do say so myself, and would probably be enough for me to give him the song outright. Combine it with how little care he shows at the idea of dying to stop the motive in CH2, and it really does seem like this might just be his song.
The Chattering Lack of Common Sense - Mark Nolastnamegiven
Confidence Rating: 5/10
GHOST AND PALS MENTIONED!!!!!! I AM INGESTING ARTHROPODS AS WE SPEAK!!!1!!
To be entirely honest with you, I’m assigning this on Vibes and like three lyrics. Chattering has a… confusing sort of lore, where there’s a lot of background information on its characters, Arc (the one with the bandages) and Say (the one without the bandages), but most of it isn’t easy to discern from the song. The comments on this linked post have the longest explanation I could find (though they omit that Say and Arc apparently eat humans which is mentioned in other sources), but I don’t actually know where the commenters got that information so take it all with a grain of salt.
Thankfully, the truly important parts for our purposes are kinda mentioned in the song. See, Say and Arc aren’t human, though they try to blend in with humans:
[Say] Basically, I bet you'll see At first, I'm not quite what I seem Every day is just the same (Picking names, repeating faces) Everything is show and tell And things are played off somewhat well
This takes a particular toll on Say, who wants to be “normal.”
This is what I've come to be [Say] (This is what I shouldn't be)
Also importantly: they don’t remember anything before the age of 6! They have no idea how they got to where they got. That might remind you of someone, maybe.
While the feeling of inhumanity that Say struggles with, and the general idea of trying to blend in with society, could be taken to represent a few different characters, I think the actual moment of lore the song seems to be about is a bit more important. I believe the song shows the moment Arc and Say meet for the first time, around age 18. I say that mainly because of the focus on first meetings and new experiences and views in the song:
[Say] Basically, I bet you'll see At first, I'm not quite what I seem […] [Arc] I could never understand How first impressions go unplanned […] [Both] Turn around about a new view Bring about the fear inside you […] [Say] I've been contemplating Fallacies and things that scare me Why not try to let go? I've been feeling out of order! I'm allowing change, so Take a good look, this is me This is what I’ve come to be! […] [Arc] First impressions reborn This is what I've come to be! (This is what I shouldn't be) This is what I wanna be!
You can probably tell where I’m going with this. Mark’s entire character is based on the fact that they don’t remember anything, meaning everything in the killing game is a new experience, so the theme of new experiences, rebirth, change… they’re all definitely prevalent in their character. That’s not even mentioning the whole “multiple introductions” thing Mark did with Ellis.
Mark [CH1, Page 47]: That reminds me. I wanted to do this over again. They stand up and extend their hand towards me. Mark: Hi. I’m Mark. I’m not sure what my Ultimate talent is, and, uh, I guess I’m using they/them, for now, at least. It’s nice to meet you. Ellis: Nice to meet you too, Mark. I’m Ellis Ortiz, your Ultimate Lucky Student, and… the man of your dreams~
Ellis [CH1, Page 153]: You seem much more aware than when we first met. Or when we second met. You need a third meeting? I extend my hand. Ellis: Hello there, beautiful stranger. It is I, Ellis Ortiz– Ultimate Lucky Student, any pronouns. They laugh and scratch their cheek gently, a bit embarrassed. Mark: I’m Mark. Still don’t know my real name, talent, or previously preferred pronouns, but… glad to be here with you.
Combined with the lines about being “out of sorts” and “out of order”, Chattering is a song which certainly fits Mark’s vibe.
And while my confidence rating is low, that’s because I feel there’s other characters this song could go to as well. However, I still give this one to Mark, because those other characters have other songs which could go with them, while I struggle to come up with many other options for Mark.
Btw supposedly every character has a Vocaloid song and an English song, since there’s an entire extra 16 songs which haven’t been released yet. But CLOCS is a Vocaloid song and in English, so. Which does it count as? xD
Bitter Choco Decoration - Taylor Long
Using a translation by MML!opinions!Fun!Chocolate!
Confidence Rating: 8.5/10
Now this is a Taylor song! Though, I have been confidently incorrect regarding stuff about this character in the past, as evident by me very confidently guessing them to be an Actor instead of Impressionist pre-Prologue, so. Lmao.
Bitter Choco Decoration is a song about someone who molds themselves to be what other people want of them, never going in any extreme direction personality-wise.
I try not to pointlessly expose myself, Not to talk about myself, not to understand myself But I try not to be a bit too silent, To be laughed at rather than to make people laugh
Most lines in the song follow that formula, “I try to do this, but not too much,” to really drill in the point of the singer wanting to be what people wish of them. Which, of course, is a very Taylor thing to do, as their entire thing is trying to become what people want them to be.
Taylor [CH1 BS, Page 2]: I try to fit in, but at the end of the day, I’m just me, you know? The only special part about me is when I’m doing an impression of someone else. Other than that, I’m just as regular as you. Robert: Really…? It sort of makes sense, but I still feel like Taylor has always had a way better grasp on the situation than I do. Then again, maybe I’m just reading them wrong…? Robert: But, your impressions are so cool. Taylor: Hehe, thank you! But, I really just use them to make people laugh, and so that I don’t say anything weird. Robert: Weird? Taylor: Like, um… I bet if I, as me, started talking about conspiracy theories, it’d be really weird. But, if I pretend to be Kennedy, it feels natural! No one questions what I have to say, or why I said it that way.
There’s other examples, but you get the idea.
Vegas Lights - Antonia Cisneros
Confidence Rating: 9.5/10
Come on, if a song called Vegas Lights doesn’t end up being Antonia’s or Ellis’ I riot (/silly). Apart from the obvious (that Antonia is from Vegas and a goddamn casino Dealer), even the non-strictly gambling lines here sorta fit Antonia’s character and vibes.
Oh, if you only knew What we've been up to I guarantee you'd keep it secret
You can connect that to Antonia’s whole thing about secrets she had going on with Cass:
Antonia [CH1, Page 148]: We weren’t dealing with only the mastermind, darling. We were dealing with “secrets.” And, while I may not want to say them here, I have things in my past I’d rather not share, especially if I were to attempt a murder.
Also:
In the Vegas lights! Where villains spend the weekend, the deep end We're swimming with the sharks until we drown
“Swimming with the sharks” can be taken to mean Antonia playing along with the “house” (literally in the casinos, and by killing someone per the mm’s wishes in the killing game) until it eventually caused her death.
And I’m sure there’s others you could point to, but I feel my case has been made well enough.
Pheles - Paris Hall
Using a translation by Hiraethie and Violet.
Confidence Rating: 7/10
A song about rumors and secrets? Songs like just the one for our favorite Ultimate Gossip! Pheles is a song about… well to be frank I’m pretty sure there’s some context I’m missing, but it kinda sounds like it’s about some kind of spy acting after a war.
As for discussion, let's talk loudly about it after the violence is over The iron scraps have gone rusty, there’s value in rumors […] Rumor go! Rumor go! The rumor has been going around. Now, let us go while we’re in control Rumor go! Rumor go! The rumor has been going around The unleashed frustration. Rumor go! Rumor go! The rumor has been going around Now, let us go while we’re rebelling Rumor go! Rumor go! The rumor has been going around that She’ll be the queen to save the world!
This already kinda narrows down our suspects to either Paris or Cass. And while I absolutely think Cass could work here, especially since I find some of the lines about “saving the world” and the Mephistopheles symbolism fits them better, there’s another song which I feel fits them just as well, while I struggle to come up with other songs for Paris.
If you’re not convinced, I’ll point you to this particular line, which feels much more of a Paris thing than a Cass thing.
When you get fed up with even people's deaths, just like a gum that's lost its flavor, you would spit out and throw them away, wouldn’t you?
Considering the whole “Paris doesn’t have a loved one” thing from CH2, we can infer she doesn’t care too much about other people, and from there suppose she wouldn’t be too bothered by their deaths either. Of course, though, she tends to hide this lack of care. You could say-
Hide even your desires behind a mask Don’t let them know your real intentions
Yeah that.
All in all, I’m comfortable with this pick for Paris, and the only reason my confidence rating isn’t higher is because Cass exists.
Nonsense Bungaku - Vivi Mitchell
Using a translation by bluepenguin.
Confidence Rating: 1.5/10
Ah, here’s a hard one! See, the song is called Nonsense Bungaku because it makes no sense!
Alright, that’s a bit of an exaggeration. The vague idea I got from reading others’ interpretations is that the song’s about finding oneself in a world of absurdity. It uses weird and random phrases to convey the titular nonsense while simultaneously talking about its themes.
A mid afternoon rendezvous Bibbidi-bobbidi-boo I’ll shower you in lonely love We, with our sickening hearts, Will be reborn today
So… why am I giving it to Vivi, then? The idea is that Vivi’s obsession with reviving the dead could be considered “nonsense”, but she chooses to embrace it regardless.
We Become idiots, dance in midair And forget about the present, rat-tat-tat (rat-tat-tat)
“Become idiots” could be interpreted as “believing that Vivi can revive the dead”, as it is a bit of an outlandish idea, “forgetting about the present” because it gives hope of a future with no more deaths in the killing game.
Let’s dance ’til it’s light, let’s heat up the night So we can give tears the heave-ho and not sleep So that it doesn’t end up becoming a lie
Vivi wants to continue doing what they’re doing (“dancing ‘til it’s light”), so that they can make good on their promises (“so that it doesn’t end up becoming a lie”) and make the others happy (“give tears the heave ho”).
I won’t be sentimental; I’m not afraid anymore With a sharpened blade of words, nothing is useless […] I’m so fed up already with you and your contrariness
Vivi’s deciding to push ahead with her goals without fear of failure or ridicule, and is getting tired of the others putting her down. The word “contrariness” is funny because Aidan, but Vivi does have some connection with him through Kennedy, so it kinda works.
And there’s probably more to be found there, but make no mistake. This is a reach. An insane one, even. The lines are so vague and up to interpretation that you could realistically make an argument for this song to go to, like, half the cast at least. I wanna call out Ellis in particular as a possibility, because as we'll see, my guess for them isn't particularly great, and this fits them somewhat well. That's to explain the abysmal confidence rating. However, I’m happy enough with Vivi, so that’s the guess here!
Nothing to Say - Jeff Breeze
Confidence Rating: 8/10
When this song started playing, I thought of Jeff so absolutely and definitively that if this ends up being wrong I will be horrendously embarrassed. That said, this still feels extremely Jeff coded.
Nothing to Say is a bit hard to describe, but it’s basically the life story of someone who’s experienced a lot, made mistakes, moved on-
But if I could take another swing or two I always hit my target when it ain't brand new
(AKA “I always fuck up at the start, but I don’t make the same mistake twice”)
-and yet can’t really think of any sage advice to give (“I’ve got nothing to say”). That’s because while the vibe the song gives off is that the singer is content with their life, they seem to recognize it isn’t for everyone.
And I heard the message, and I wrote it down Some time spent lost is a life spent found A hundred bad habits come in one good day And I guess that's all to say I got nothing to say
(AKA “I may have wasted some time, but I got something out of it. But I know my habits are kinda bad, so you shouldn’t take me too seriously”)
This kind of vibe, of someone who’s experienced a lot but always in a more or less shallow way, fits Jeff decently well I’d say.
Now even though I've been known to waste I'll keep a lost cause rolling with a travel case […] If I had got what I'd been looking for You'd see me right now looking more and more And what I do got now got me on my way So I'll talk but I got nothing to say
See? A very active life of moving around a lot, never settling down. Perfect for the Ultimate Absentee!
Poison - Noah Walker
Confidence Rating: 3/10
If you know the song and the character, that confidence rating might surprise you. I mean, a song about alcoholism and partying where the singer is worried about what their mom would think?
Let's bounce All night We're turning off my memory This club Is our house Will my momma ever forgive me? I wanna be cheered up I want drinks all around I wanna break my rules I wanna rock this town And oh Well shame on me And I guess the snake got free 'Cause we got the poison on our tongues
(Poison being an allegory for alcohol if that’s somehow not obvious)
I mean, that’s extremely Noah coded! How could it not be his?
Simply put, because Ellis exists. Just as drawn to alcohol as Noah, just as willing to go wild to ignore their real issues, and a decent amount of suppressed shame to boot. There is a very legitimate argument to swap those two, especially if you’re willing to speculate on information we haven’t gotten in the story yet for the song which I actually gave to Ellis if you want that one to go to Noah.
But that will make more sense in the Ellis section. For now, all you need to understand is that I believe Poison fits Noah very well, but this has a low confidence rating because it could also go to Ellis.
Lower/Lower One’s Eyes - Vanessa Bravo
Using a translation by Oktavia.
Confidence Rating: 3.5/10
(Why does this have two names lol)
So this one’s a little strange, and kinda comes down to the fact I don’t have many songs to give Vanessa.
Lower has some biblical interpretations about Judas and Jesus, but I’ll talk about it in more abstract terms so it’s easier to relate it to DROS later. Though just from me saying that, you can probably imagine it’s a song about betrayal.
Gradually becoming disillusioned with you, The curtain’s about to rise– it’s showtime, Thus we’ll soon say goodbye to the quietness of this theatre
The singer is becoming disillusioned with someone else, but they’re hiding it, pretending like in a theater play. See, they’re actually very conflicted about betraying the other person.
Left with a guilty conscience ever weighing down upon my back I wouldn’t dare obey my heart’s desires– instead bottling them all up, They want to get along with the other, but can’t get themselves to There are things in theory I’d like to come to terms with, but I just can’t I’ve been keeping them all to myself, though I might explode from it […] Should we be fated to part, should we be fated to lose one another I pray we may be reunited each and every time such a thing happens If you’d just do me the honor of staying, staying and never to part, Then I’ll get to remain the only one who knows what this salvation feels like […] “Why don’t we get out of here before it all goes to hell?” …Again and again, I’m whispering that too-good-to-be-true wish to myself
You get the idea. Someone the singer loves is doing something wrong, the singer knows it’s wrong, but still feel conflicted in turning their back to them.
The connection I’m drawing to Vanessa is through Antonia, of course. At the end of the first trial, Vanessa knows Antonia’s done something really wrong, but she still feels bad about what’s happening.
If that doesn’t convince you, you could also take this to be related to Vanessa’s actions in CH2 in a more abstract sense. She wanted to kill someone to stop the motive, something she considered a more or less noble thing but would still be a betrayal of some sort, so she was conflicted in wanting to do it.
… Yeah voting for Antonia’s a bit more straightforward. Given I struggle to come up with other songs for Vanessa, I’m gonna call that good enough!
Addiction Governance - Ellis Ortiz
Confidence Rating: 1/10
Welcome… to the single worst guess on the list!
Now, sometimes these are difficult because the song’s vague and can be taken to mean several different things. The issue with Addiction Governance is actually the opposite; it’s so explicit that it’s hard to relate it to any given character, because you can’t easily bend it to the DROS story the way you can with stuff like Nonsense Bungaku.
Simply put, Addiction Governance is about someone falling back into an addiction they thought they’d moved past.
Temptation always wins I hear you calling out my name Don't worry I've always been this way I thought I'd take back everything And say I was out But here you are now […] Fate arrive Take what's mine I know I walked in sin Addiction governing
There’s little specificity on what the addiction actually is, as while there is a reference to gambling-
Could I escape in time if I realize But I gamble it all on numbing fees
-it can also be taken to mean the “numbing fees” are the addiction, which is more general.
So, what now? Ellis definitely has a few vices, from drinking to gambling, so it seems like it works at first glance. But remember; Addiction Governance isn’t just about addiction, it’s specifically about a recovering addict relapsing.
Does that really apply to Ellis? He doesn’t really express much of an interest in stopping his drinking or gambling habits, so whether he’s addicted or not, relapsing isn’t necessarily a concern.
That’s why this can be swapped with Noah with a little speculation. We know less about Noah’s history than Ellis’, so it’s possible that he’s drinking more in the killing game than he’d like, or even that there’s some other addiction he’s tried to drop but is coming back in the game. I imagine people would bring up if someone asked for anything harder than alcohol in the Costumer Service Desk, but y’know, maybe they missed it.
However, we don’t have evidence for that. And there is an angle I can see with Ellis that isn’t there for Noah, which relates mainly to these lines.
Thought I could rolled the dice Thought I could paid the price Saying it won't take me [sic] Could I escape in time if I realize […] But now the damage done Is creeping into every day Shoulda slowed the dose [sic] Too late now […] I thought I'd take back everything And say I was out But here you are now
Instead of it being about relapsing, the song can be interpreted as someone who thinks they can get out of their habit before it becomes an addiction. This reckless attitude could potentially be connected to Ellis’ attitude towards the killing game. They believe they can coast off of their luck and survive without getting attached to anyone, before they “get in too deep.” Something something gambling addiction combined with the idea that she can stop it before it gets too bad something something?
As you can see, it’s a bit iffy, but it’s close enough for me. And with that interpretation, combined with the lines in Poison about “momma”, my final call is made. While I could still see the swap between Ellis and Noah, Ellis on Addiction Governance and Noah on Poison is what I’m going with. Especially because no one else really comes close to working with Addiction Governance in my opinion.
Veils - Kennedy Rey
Confidence Rating: 8.5/10
I mean. Do I even need to show you anything beyond the line in the image above?
I keep falling into the night To look at what goes on out of our sight Lift the veils that cover our eyes! Forget about death and fight for your life!
Technically speaking, Veils is about someone trying to uncover what issues are hampering a relationship, but the theme of looking past the surface level and finding hidden truths is more than enough for me to consider this a Kennedy song. Ironic, that Kennedy of all people has one the songs making me do the least amount of conspiracy theorizing.
One Sheep - Robert Smith
Using a translation by Hiraethie and Tapewormreverie.
Confidence Rating: 3/10
Now this guess was a hard one, because I'll repeat what I said in the Vivi section: what the fuck is this song even about??? I couldn’t figure out shit about the lyrics on my own. I had to look up fucking Project Sekai analysis because I’m pretty sure the lack of context was destroying my chances of understanding One Sheep. Like I’m sure the song can stand on its own, but seeing as it was written for a proseka event, getting that type of context probably doesn’t hurt.
What I found was this video by FructoseTolerant on Youtube, which I will uncritically accept as entirely correct in its interpretations of proseka characters because I have no way of knowing if it’s wrong, and from there try to relate their interpretations of some of these lyrics to Robert because I don’t know what I’m doing anymore.
I want to pretend to be a desparado “You think you could do that?” my self-hatred creeps Such a roar, so to speak, is a scapegoat It’s as if a curse has clung to me
Video Analysis Transcript: The first line having the word “pretend” instead of quote unquote “be” is a reflection of how, in the end, An just wants to pretend to be like Nagi, because in the end she’ll have to realize that she can’t be Nagi, she has to be herself.
You can connect this to Robert wanting to be more like the other Ultimates, failing to realize that being the Ultimate Normie has its perks too.
Robert [CH1 BS, Page 3]: Just being here makes me feel like freaking out. I have to try so hard to pretend I’m feeling normal and not lose my cool, so that I can fit in with everyone else. But, even if you don’t see your talent the same as everyone else’s… you still don’t seem that scared. You’re managing the situation fine, in your own way. Taylor looks at me with a slight frown. I feel like I’m being studied, in a way. Taylor: Do you think that’s a good thing? That we’re all so “normal” about being in this scary situation? Robert: I don’t know if it’s a good thing. From my perspective, it’s something I’m jealous of. I wish I wasn’t so scared… Taylor: Well, I think it’s a good thing. Robert: Why…? Taylor: It means that you’re assessing the situation realistically, and that you have things you’re worried about getting back to at home. Those are both good things, aren’t they? Robert: I guess so.
I, uh, hope An gets to a point where she can be happy living as herself! (?) ‘Cuz Robert sure as hell didn’t!
You’re just a lonely one, so Let me hear that voice of yours
Video Analysis Transcript: [That line] made me realize that voices are meant to be heard, and so does my voice too. Everyone’s lone voice is different, and comes with its own story.
Robert may seem normal and average, but as we especially saw near the end of CH2 Daily Life, his voice deserves to be heard too!
O, lone sheep, go tear the darkness to pieces, the entire thing [...] You’re just a solitary one— Right now, go far beyond them
Video Analysis Transcript: “Tearing the darkness” gives me an image of illuminating the path and making your way into the great big world.
Uh… something something Robert is isolated from other Ultimates but he’s still able to contribute and bring joy into the world in his own way something something?
I’ve been getting hurt more and more often by this “something” that I no longer see as a hobby Did they make you say that? That “I love you” There’s no way that exists here till the end of time
Video Analysis Transcript: With [the first line] sung by An, who is scared that Kohane will leave her even more…
(I’m assuming the other two lines are also somewhat connected to that idea even though the singer in the Vivid BAD SQUAD version changes :v)
Dude, this An girl is going through it! Don’t worry girl Kohane seems… like the name of a nice person, I’m sure she won’t leave you! (?)
Uh… back to ideas of alienation, that Robert feels like the other Ultimates might leave him behind? Hell if I know lol.
Anyways. Again, I have no idea if this is right or not, but between it vaguely working at times and sheer process of elimination, this is the guess I’m going with.
Pushing Daisies - Harper Young
Confidence Rating: 4/10
Fun fact, the last change I made in this playlist guess was swapping Vanessa and Harper. I had misinterpreted Lower and I didn’t like Pushing Daisies for Ness, so once I figured Lower out, the swap was made!
Not that Pushing Daisies makes significantly more sense with Harper, mind you. The song’s about someone in love with a girl who is already in a relationship, but one where she’s apparently not treated very well.
Oh I lost my head again Cause he's the one you're drinking with And you don't know you're better off alone
The singer pleads undying loyalty to this girl, and promises to follow her until he’s pushing daisies, aka until he’s dead.
For you I'd give the whole damn lot But tell me what good is all I got? Cause I'll follow till I'm pushing daisies You're on my mind Oh my my
While I struggle to see the “bad relationship” angle with anyone in the cast, the pledge of undying loyalty fits well enough with Harper’s nice and caring personality. Ve definitely enjoys making others feel better, and the idea of helping until ve physically can’t makes sense for ver. Specifically, I could see a connection with how Harper wants to help Noah feel better, even when Noah’s a bit bothered by it, as the song does have a bit of an attitude of the singer feeling like they know better than the girl they want to help.
... Is what I would have said a week ago! Yeah this post was mostly written before CH3 Part 3 lol. Because with the release of that last part, there is actually some more evidence that this song could refer to Harper's feelings towards Noah. For one, there now is a specific person who could be seen as the bad person who the "girl" hangs out with: Paris.
Noah [CH3 Part 3, Page 13]: Harper, it’s– Paris: Noah. Noah: … Noah looks at Harper, then at Davis, then at Paris before looking at his plate. Noah: It’s… probably for the best if we just go along with it. No sweat, right?
Someone who is apparently kinda mistreating Noah, but Noah's going along with it and ignoring Harper's worries. Maybe?
More importantly, though, this:
Harper [CH3 Part 3, 24]: I should be taking more of a stance, in line with what I believe to be true. And what you believe to be true is…? Ellis: If you believe anything, that is. It’d probably be worse to get stuck defending a side you only 30% believe in. Harper: I suppose “believing” a side isn’t quite the right way to put it. What I believe is that this conflict is needless and we should be putting suspicions aside to work towards a solution. But, it’s difficult to convince some of the others of that, especially if I don’t express myself clearly enough…
Harper wanting to express that something is wrong, but is worried about whether or not ve can properly express that to the others? Feels like...
I got an itch But what can I do If all I do is think about How she'd take the truth
Maybe? It's an angle you can take with some other characters, mainly Taylor, but with Bitter Choco Decoration being here as well, I'll take my chances with this Harper guess.
HIBANA- Davis Love

Confidence Rating: 7.5/10
You would know this prediction was coming if you’ve been reading my reaction posts to DROS, as I’ve actually brought it up before! You may also know how I interpret this song if you’ve read my analysis of the Milgram Es cover for it. The basic gist is that the singer is in a relationship, and they want their lover to be more assertive.
Aa, I don't like this; Choose both. Aa, I don't like this; Break both.
The singer doesn’t want a pushover who is too scared to hurt them to do anything committal, because they consider that a fragile, “weak-minded” love.
I don’t want to harbor a love that will never end – Come on, properly fill me more with anxiety. I’d like you to act your part at peek a boo – Come on, answer to {what I ask} more properly! nanananananananana It’s “incomplete”, I’ll say it time and time again nanananananananana Amidst a love that missed hitting “NO”. [...] I don’t want to love a weak-minded love Come on, make it hurt more properly. Going so far it’s no longer funny, is surely much more enjoyable, Come on, melt me more properly!
So the singer wants someone who isn’t afraid of saying “no.” Some kind of contrarian, possibly. One could even say, the singer would love to be with the Ultimate Contrarian-
Jokes aside, the Aidan-Davis propaganda isn’t the only reason I’m giving Davis HIBANA. Davis generally seems to dislike non-committal people, especially in the context of relationships.
Davis [CH2 BS, Page 17]: Have you been in a relationship before? Jeff: Ehhhh. Not in such a serious way. More just… we hang around each other for as long as we want. A week, or a month or two. Not usually longer than that. Something I said seems to have particularly bothered him, because he’s back to half-glaring at the table.
You can see the point, right? Davis doesn’t like that Jeff doesn’t fully involve themselves emotionally in their relationships, the way that the HIBANA singer is mad at their lover for being indecisive and too scared to hurt the singer to really put their whole personality on the table, per say. Does that make sense? Hopefully!
ID Smile - Cassidy Torres
Using a translation by Shiopaca and Violet.
Confidence Rating: 7.5/10
ID Smile is about a secret the singer is keeping about their identity because they’re worried about how it will affect their relationships.
If I want to connect with you, then I can’t part with my secret If we had made this world that composes our existence of being charmed by each other ring out, Hey, could we stay this way, just like this?
I... honestly think I can leave it at that and that’s all I need to say about that one lol. Cass kept a secret about her identity for the entire time she was alive: she was a spy. Yep. With Vegas Lights knocking out the other big candidate for this one, ID Smile ends up being one of the easier ones to explain, and the only reason my confidence rating isn't higher is a combination of Pheles being here and other characters also having secrets.
Btw this is about that Mizuki character that took over my dash a while ago right? That’s pretty much all the contact I had with proseka before this, so I hope whatever happened in Mizu5 wasn’t as horrendously harrowing as that image I kept seeing implied. Or that at least the fandom enjoyed whatever horrors actually came from that lol.
No Hands - Grace Thomas
Confidence Rating: 8/10
And we reach the last one! No Hands is a song about how life sometimes changes without our control, making us feel that we’re riding around in a vehicle with our hands off the steering wheel.
Nothing lasts forever, you've heard it all before The brutal winds of change are knocking at your door No hands! I just keep riding around again to these broken-hearted beats, yeah
The big theme to focus on here is how some changes can be irreversible, taking us to the main line that connects this song to Grace.
The clocks are ticking, they talk behind your back They echo every second that you've wasted in the past But nothing lasts forever, you've heard it all before It's time to face your demons, they're knocking at your door
I mean, it’s pretty clear, right? Grace’s character is mainly defined by their hatred of time wasting, so a song all about how you need to take the chances you get because you have no control of when things are going to change forever is right up their alley.
Particularly, it brings to mind their situation in CH2, where their life changed without their control when their boyfriend died during the motive announcement, and they decided to take action before even more time could pass, and more things could change as a result. Aka, they decide to stop riding with “no hands” and instead try to take control of their situation by killing Robert. Thankfully, we can end with a guess that I’m actually decently comfortable with!
-
Woohoo! This took way longer than it should have, but it’s finally done! I wanted to do this before even more content about DROS came out, since I didn’t want it to be too easy. Should I have waited longer so I could make better guesses? Maybe! I imagine a large quantity of these will eventually be proven wrong. But I had fun, and that’s all that matters. Anyways, thanks for reading! If you made it this far, you deserve your own theme song! Hope you get a cool one xp See ya’!
Now Announcing...
Our new fangan, Danganronpa: One Shot!
Prologue releasing Friday, November 8th at 2 PM PST!
As we've vaguely mentioned before, we (Accirax and Venus) have written a lot of fangans for fun. We're now posting one of those fangans online for the first time! Venus wrote the characters and the mysteries, while Accirax wrote the protagonist and solved them. For a more detailed explanation, please check our About Page and FAQ!
The prologue will be posted on Tumblr as a Google Docs link, as that's the format the fangans will exist in. There will also be a Google Slides e-Handbook to accompany every installation. We will announce further posting schedules as we figure out the pace at which we want to post the chapters.
Our ask box is currently open, so please send in any questions you have about the format, any non-spoiler questions about the fangan itself, or just general thoughts/excitement! We're super excited to share this all with you, so if you're unsure about whether or not to send something in, send it. We want to see it!
Following the prologue, we'll be hosting a character Q&A, as well as allowing for voting on bonus content between the characters. We also may post polls to determine what our future posting schedule will look like, so please keep an eye out for those!
And finally, here's a version of the poster with the characters' pronouns if you want to discuss them!
As well as an easier-to-see picture of our header :)
Have fun, and we look forward to letting you meet the characters on November 8th!

DR: One Shot Character Playlist Explanations
Hello everyone! It’s Venus here with the answers to the DR:OS full character playlist! Basically, each One Shot character has both an English and Vocaloid song that I picked out for them that fits their backstory, story, personality and/or vibes. If you missed the other posts or are just running behind, you can definitely still take a swing at the playlist before reading the answers. But, if you’re ready to know, just look below the cut!
Please be advised that this post will contain extreme spoilers for all of One Shot. You’ll also want to expect content commonly seen in One Shot Trigger Warnings, such as death, murder and suicide, as well as betrayal, conservative values, alcoholism and other mental health struggles. With that being said, let’s begin the explanations!
Cass Torres —
“I Know” by Cut Capers / “ID Smile” by toa
Cass’ songs heavily relate to her true identity of being the Ultimate (Secret) Agent– someone who, even before the killing game, was investigating the Resort and trying to put a stop to its villainous activities.
As quick context for Cass, I’ll also reveal some backstory information that wasn’t contained within the free time document we recently posted.
Cass grew up loving detective and spy novels, and it became her dream to become someone who possessed a multitude of skills and put a dramatic stop to crime like her childhood fictional heroes. While a lot of the effects of this on their life were positive, leading to them studying and learning extra skills to further their pursuits, they also decided to take a step back from their family and friendships; after all, having loved ones they were attached to would give them an exploitable weakness. What began as a child playing pretend turned into a serious life decision before she knew it, and she always felt separated from her peers.
“I Know” focuses primarily on the investigations into the Resort. It opens with Cass finally being able to act on the skills they’ve been learning since childhood:
Time seems to be evolvin' here on out My dreary days have turned to playgrounds In oh so many ways
Investigating the Resort was Cass’ first real objective, and she was thrilled to finally be on the scene, acting as the person she always dreamed of being. Her talent fulfilled, she set to investigating, learning important truths about the Casino.
And I know, you know and he knows and she knows That it doesn't just fall in your plate and To get what you want, see it through it's your show Go against the grain don't emulate
Cass learns about the internal workings of the Casino– the way it’s structured, how the economy there works, how Antonia is at the center of everything. They try to put a stop to it, but are halted by being put into the killing game.
I could probably pick a few choice lyrics out from the rap, but for the most part, they’re nonsense when it comes to Cass. It’s hard to find songs for some of these people that are 100% accurate, so having the right gist is usually what I shoot for. Don’t worry though, plenty of the songs coming up later on this explanation will actually make sense the whole way through.
As for “ID Smile,” it focuses more on Cass’ vision of herself as an Agent first and a regular person second.
That’s right, as always This is an identity I’ll never yield
Their identity as an Agent characterizes everything they do, both in their past and in their present. Even in the killing game, they’ll risk their life to try to solve the mysteries around them, going against their own safety advice.
I can’t proceed, but even faced with this dead end, If I want to connect with you, then I can’t part with my secret
Cass knows the killing game isn’t an environment to trust others in, so even when surrounded by people of her age she’d love to get to know and make friends with, she can’t give up her identity so easily.
Obstructed by faint expectations, I plug my ears and make a vague face of feigned indifference
If we could've stayed connected, just like this… Would it have hurt, or would I have wanted to stay?
But no matter how much she wants to reach out to the others, she’ll stay within her role and solve the mysteries. It’s the life they chose for themself, and it’s the life they committed to. Still, they don’t know how things might have turned out if they had let others in and connected with them a bit more truthfully.
Robert Smith —
“Nothing to Say” by Dom Fera / “Infinitely Gray” by Surii
Honorable mention: Knock Knock (Vinyl Theatre)
Robert’s songs are, predictably, about how he experiences the killing game while just being a normal guy.
“Nothing to Say” takes a more lighthearted tone with it, explaining his mannerisms while contrasting their normalcy with his heightened stress under pressure.
I think I need to have a drink, I mean I had a pitch-black coffee full of dopamine I had a couple bad times but I think I'll be fine I'm always tracking what happens when I lose my mind
Robert tries to keep an upbeat demeanor within the killing game, mirroring the people around him who are much more talented and capable than he is. Still, internally, he’s always thinking about the ways he’s in danger and the ways he doesn’t measure up to the others.
And I watch a lotta clips full of good advice They're never for me but they sound real nice You gotta start spending what you wanna be paid And I guess that's just all to say
The others in the killing game (like Grace, for instance) tell him to try acting a certain way or try out certain advice, but whenever he tries them, he always feels like he’s just going through the motions.
If I had got what I'd been looking for You'd see me right now looking more and more And what I do got now got me on my way So I'll talk but I got nothin' to say
He tries his best, but doesn’t feel like he produces many results. In the investigations, Trials, and even daily life, he values everyone else’s contributions more highly than his own. Thus, while he’ll maintain pleasant conversation and do his best to pitch in, he feels as though his words contribute nothing– thus, he has nothing to say.
“Infinitely Gray” has a lot of the same types of points raised, but in a much angstier and more dramatic tone.
I don’t have the talent so I suppose I’ll just remain here crying all my life I was envious of the shade of blue in the scene before my eyes
Rainy Rainy I wished to be strong My voice scattered unfeelingly, playing a melody of loneliness All my fingers would convey was the colour of lifelessness “Won’t you recognise me?”
The lyrics spell it out very plainly: Robert feels he lacks the talent that those around him have, and he wishes he could match them and contribute.
On the path of retreat that’s closed off, Put aside that talent you were so envious of for a moment Just having done something is considered a win, yeah? This is no time to be holding your breath!
The song ends on a nicer note, saying that doing anything in the face of adversity is worthwhile. Robert embodied this by continuing moving forwards in the killing game; he did what he could for as long as he could.
Grace Thomas —
“Counter Clock” by JAWS / “Lower” by nulut
Grace’s songs tend to relate to Justin and their feelings of loss in regards to the Chapter 2 motive, leading into their decision to kill.
“Counter Clock” paints a picture of consideration followed by sudden, decisive action.
Words, I’m thinking all about these words Fantasizing how you say it in your words Get your head going and squeeze in some work
Grace takes in all of the information they’re presented at the beginning of the killing game and sets to work on escaping, seeing as they’d much rather return to their previous life.
Have you thought about removing these walls? Tick tock, tick tock goes the counter clock
The desire to leave is something Grace has throughout the story; even in the early stages, Grace considers attempting to escape by the killing game’s rules. Though they don’t act on the idea, the thought echoes in the back of their head– the ever-ticking clock that urges them to leave.
Boom, boom, there goes the boomerang Spin around in the air while your phone rang Is it tear I’m smelling Or is it the fеar that keeps dwelling Don’t let it tick, let it tick you off Thе boomerang will come around, and you are falling
Eventually, the killing game catches up to them, striking them in their weak spot: the person they love. Still, even as Justin dies, Grace knows that they need to be slower, methodical enough to win the Trial. They bide their time in irritation, waiting for an opportunity.
Impossible is never the case we are working on It’s the dreamer and reality face off So let it tick, let it tick you off Punch a hole in the wall, and you are out of here right Right now oh
Not too long after, Grace takes their shot, letting the ticking of the clock dictate their decision to get out sooner rather than later. Unfortunately for Grace, the Trial doesn’t end in the way they want it to.
“Lower” focuses more on the feelings of loss than Counter Clock does.
As the curtain’s raising up We’ll leave this quiet meeting place and bid farewell.
Lower is, in Grace’s terms, a song entirely about Justin. The killing game begins with their separation.
I can’t even bear to the accept the things I want to come to terms with I’m holding onto something that’s too much for me to handle. My hazy voice burns my parched throat to a crisp I didn’t know what I was supposed to say
Justin dies, and Grace is overwhelmed with grief. While they do their best, they can’t grapple with the feelings of loss within the killing game’s environment.
If we are to be separated, if we are to lose our way, I’ll make sure we’ll be connected this time, no matter how many times it takes
Crying with you, laughing with you, getting angry with you Singing with you, dancing with you, talking with you
What-ifs and memories cloud Grace’s ability to think, taking over their usually logical demeanor.
Whispering the same thing, always the same: “How much longer will this last?” So I may never forget the air you carved out I wonder how many times I’ll be made to remember it again
The grief is what made Grace kill. The inability to escape from Justin’s memory or to heal from the loss led to them killing Robert, then failing to escape themself.
Grace was always aware of time passing them by, and the confines of the killing game both kept them from their desires and forced them to idle in grief instead of moving forwards. These songs encapsulate those feelings which made them kill.
Vivi Mitchell —
“The Chattering Lack of Common Sense” by Ghost and Pals / “I Nandesu” by Rerulili
Honorable mention: Doctor = Funk Beat (nyanyanya)
Both of Vivi’s songs focus on her status of being different from her peers. While “The Chattering Lack of Common Sense” examines that sentiment in terms of her social connections, “I Nandesu” emphasizes her worldview through concrete beliefs and actions.
The Chattering Lack of Common Sense, when interpreted without any of Ghost’s own stories and symbolism, reads to me as a song about the contrast between the singers’ inherent strangeness and the opinions of society.
Basically, I bet you'll see At first I'm not quite what I seem Every day is just the same Picking names, repeating faces I could never understand How first impressions go unplanned
Vivi doesn’t enjoy the whims of “normal society”; she’d much rather be herself and interpret the world in the way that makes the most sense to her. As they meet the other students, they’re forced into the role of someone playing along with a social script.
Nonetheless, we're all the same There's many things from where we came Show a smile, we're rather bored Nothing lines up anymore
Still, Vivi has high hopes when meeting the other Ultimates. If everyone here is talented, everyone is different from the norm. Vivi was hoping that, amongst the talented, she’d find more people who understand her views, prioritizing results and helping others over consensus opinion of what’s okay.
"Just accept the things you know" Well, maybe so... Wait.
As things progress, though, they’re disappointed with how willing many of the other contestants are to just roll with the punches of the killing game. To boot, many of them don’t take her or her talents seriously.
I'm allowing change, so Take a good look This is me This is what I've come to be
While Vivi recognizes they’re different from others, they’re confident in their way being correct– they’re the one who helps others, who brings change into the world. Vivi has never been one to take others’ judgments of her as fact; she’ll have faith in her, even if no one else does.
I Nandesu shows off Vivi’s perspective throughout the killing game, as well as indicating her specific views and how they shape her experience.
All life is ridiculously pretty Not being able to be what we are It's an unprecedented battle in human history That’s what “I” am
Vivi believes in the value of all lives and in the value of all individuals. Still, she knows that, with the way the world is, lots of people aren’t able to show off exactly who they are comfortably. They want to fight against that notion, to be unapologetically themself– that’s the battle that they fight every day.
Joy, confusion and thirst You can't run away from the choices you've made Turn it around, make an epic recovery Come on, raise your voice in the night
At the same time, Vivi knows that irreversible things can happen if you’re not vigilant. Still, she believes in her abilities, and knows she can turn anything around if she puts her mind to it. Their determination is their greatest strength.
All life is ridiculously pretty Being upside down and godlike Height of hubris Well, it can’t be helped
While Vivi’s immense confidence can also be a weakness, it’s a decision she makes in the fight to be who she wants to be. If no one else will have faith in them, Vivi will have faith in themself. Even if the world wants her to be someone else, Vivi believes in her own talents and merit outside of it.
Kennedy Rey —
“Monster Town” by Go! Child / “Literary Nonsense” by Eve
Honorable mentions: Witch Hunt (Andrew Stein)
Kennedy is very assured in his thoughts, believing that the best way through a situation is to outthink the competition and embrace every possibility so as not to overlook the solution. Still, at the bottom of the madness is the underlying fear of what would happen any time she can’t figure out the answer.
“Monster Town” looks into Kennedy’s persona as someone who can defeat the extraordinary in contrast with their feelings of mortality.
I tear through this town! I swear that something is chasing me down Maybe a specter who can't make a sound Maybe a werewolf preparing to howl
Even as Kennedy enters the killing game, defiant and confident, he’s always aware of the dangers around him. He can more or less dissolve the threat in his mind by dispelling it with theories, but the potential truths of the situation never leave the back of his mind.
So farewell to a friend Hello to the end! I won't be a pretend Ghost hunter
As people begin dying within the killing game, Kennedy has to step up. She won’t be a pretend ghost hunter– she’ll be the singular force propelling them towards their successful ending. Kennedy resolves to find the mastermind and find a way out of the killing game.
The clock isn't set to last My time is fading fast I can't keep running into spirits of the past
Still, Kennedy’s paranoia and inability to get concrete answers out of the killing game is a time bomb, and it keeps ticking in the back of Kennedy’s head with every passing death.
One single sight! Was everything you would need to decide To make a villain of your own design And that's the last that I heard from my Frankenstein
Kennedy eventually snaps, becoming a killer in the face of Paris’ fake mystery motive. It’s a fast decision; they pivot from trying to solve mysteries to killing their closest friend (their “Frankenstein,” Vivi) overnight, but it’s the result of the paranoia that’s been brewing finally bubbling over.
I'm about to break out and leave this lodge So I can get myself out of a dodge
While Kennedy wants to solve the mysteries and know the answers to the killing game, much like in a haunted house, his priority has to be on escape, not understanding the supernatural. Kennedy giving up on the Resort’s mysteries is a sign of their resolve crumbling; for Kennedy to accept not knowing is to accept defeat.
“Literary Nonsense” better shows off the way in which Kennedy can get caught up in the fantasy of their theories, believing in them even when they contradict possibility.
Unable to become sentimental, become cowardly again Tenderly cradling a sharpened blade of words, laugh
The majority of this song “takes place” in Chapter 3, when Kennedy has the most social power. They utilize their theories in order to pin the blame on Aidan for being the mastermind– a move that both gives themself a particular avenue to focus on and shifts the group’s worries away from the unknown and onto a concrete target.
I’m sick of you and your contrariness
Guess who :)
We become idiots, dance in midair And forget about the present, rat-tat-tat (rat-tat-tat) Let’s dance ’til it’s light, let’s heat up the night So we can give tears the heave-ho and not sleep So that it doesn’t end up becoming a lie
Kennedy embraces her own “nonsense” as the truth to rid herself of worries about the present. Just like her childhood friend she forgot the fate of to protect herself from that truth, she pinpoints specific theories that give her control over the present. Then, he has to prove it thoroughly– if he can prove the acceptable theory as truth, then the truth of the world is the one he can handle.
“Since you and YOU are begging me like this You must each have your own thoughts They’re all wrong; there’s no right answer” I’ve been made a fool of, huh?
Kennedy feeds off the group, accepting their ideas into the group of possible truths, wanting their validation that the way she sees the world is correct. Over time in the killing game, though, Kennedy realizes that his truth and the real truth are concretely different, and that they lost their control over the situation.
I won’t be sentimental; I’m not afraid anymore With a sharpened blade of words, nothing is useless Before the spell is broken and we wither away Let’s be reborn
Kennedy takes action to escape while some of the others still believe in the beautiful lies they wanted to live in. It’s his only remaining course of action, so it’s what he must do.
Kennedy’s theories act as a lens into their psyche, allowing them to paint the world the way they want to see it. Still, they meet their end when encountering the ways in which the world won’t bend to their perception.
Paris Hall —
“In Love With a Camera” by The Struts / “Pheles” by Hachiya Nanashi
Honorable mention: Great Big Party (eyeamki)
Paris, outwardly characterized by her slay aura and girlboss energy, has two songs that closer outline her internal view of things.
“In Love With a Camera” is a fairly simple song about Paris’ relationship with social media and others. (I don’t really know who the guy singing would be in this situation; Paris is the “she” in the song.)
She don't need no one, she runs the world She got that lightning, come strike me, girl Call out to her, she don't hear a word (oh)
Paris loves to flaunt her status and show off, acting like her life is perfect. She’s effortlessly perfect, someone for her fans to admire and be envious of.
She love lookin' at herself And she don't need no one else Yeah, she's in love, she's in love with a camera
She doesn’t need support from anyone else; she doesn’t care about anyone else, as the Loved One’s Roulette described.
See how she plays up to the lens She pretends it's her only friend No, it don't tell her any lies Satisfies, but I can't catch her eye
However, the truth of the situation is that Paris really does want friends– she just can’t get herself to trust the people around her. Before Taylor, everyone was someone to stay ahead of. She had to ensure they didn’t reach her level. While it might have been lonely, she could fill that feeling with the adoration of her fans who would love her no matter what her life was really like.
“Pheles” shows off Paris’ more cutthroat side, reveling in her mastery of secrets and rumors in order to progress the killing game forwards.
We haven't been able to see the sunlight for a long while now In the underground, the downtown of the garbage dump As for discussion, let's talk loudly about it after the violence is over The iron scraps have gone rusty, there’s value in rumors
As the killing game is a tense situation, people are more likely to jump to conclusions and believe in the lies she spins. Paris recognizes the killing game as an environment where she holds a lot of power and sets to work.
(Also, as a side note, in a lot of songs, the idea of night is used to represent the killing game. It wasn’t really intentional, but in general, if any lines about nighttime show up, assume they’re talking about the killing game.)
Hide even your desires behind a mask Don’t you ever expose your real intentions
Paris plays her cards close to her chest. She doesn’t like giving out information about herself, nor does she tell others her strategy.
When you get fed up with even people's deaths, Just like a gum that's lost its flavor, You would spit out and throw them away, wouldn’t you?
Everyone is surprised at Paris’ apathy, but to her, it feels natural. The people around her don’t have much meaning to her, considering that, like most people she encounters, she doesn’t have much personal attachment to them, and they don’t have much personal attachment to her. It’s only Taylor that she actually begins to care about.
Because you laughed at me with that unappealing, twisted face of yours If I've balanced this body of mine on the scales, Then, well, I'll inherit that heart of yours
Even as Taylor mocks her, Paris can’t bring herself to hate them or disregard them like she does everyone else in her life. She’s caught between her usual demeanor and the fact that she actually cares about someone for the first time.
Let us cling and take hold of it Let’s steal away that extremely absurd future Even if I can't see the end of it, I don't mind.
By the end, Paris wants to win the killing game with Taylor or dismantle the whole thing. She wants to cling onto the affection she feels for them. Even without a plan to move forward, she’ll take a chance on the feeling.
Both songs tie into Paris’ desire for connection, although they reflect on her differently as a result of being before and during the killing game. Once she meets Taylor, she wants to try to be close to someone. Unfortunately for her, her bestie didn’t agree.
Taylor Long —
“Fake Ass Friends” by Set it Off / “Bitter Choco Decoration” by Syudou
Honorable mentions: Morph (Twenty One Pilots), Stupid Intruders (The Vincent Black Show), Drama Queen (Weathers), Paparazzi Murder Party (Vane Lily)
Taylor’s songs feature their resentment for their peers and people-pleasing persona that hides it.
“Fake Ass Friends” describes Taylor’s impressions very clearly.
You're turnin' into who you wanna be tonight You cherry-pick opinions you don't even like Chameleon, you're switchin' up to save your life
Taylor picks up phrases and mannerisms from others to turn into the ideal person of those around them. In Chapter 4 specifically, it’s with their life on the line, although their usual behavior still plays a heavy impact on how they feel their life runs.
You'd put a foot on my throat For a foot in the door, I found out That you'd kick me down to the rocks Just to climb to the top so now
This section specifically relates to Paris and how she’s willing to backstab and sacrifice anyone else in the killing game. Taylor, understanding it’s in Paris’ nature, assumes that the same outlook applies to them and their relationship.
Show them what they want Social camouflage Mirror everyone in sight Such a charming way to lie
Again, Taylor crafts a fake persona based on what the people around them want, specifically by mirroring others and doing impressions.
So here's a toast, to the greatest actor that I know Put on a show and never let the curtain close You sold your soul, to who you thought you needed most
While Taylor considers Paris to be an actor with her fake behavior, this line also applies to them well. They put on a masterful act to fool those around them, but “sell their soul”-- or rather, act outside of their nature– in order to gain the favor of those around them.
So good luck with your fake ass friends
Both Paris and Taylor end up dying as a result of Taylor’s resentment over Paris’ “fakeness” and Taylor’s genuine deceit.
Bitter Choco further represents Taylor keeping careful control over their persona.
I try not to hurt anyone, Not to pick on anyone, not to kill anyone On the other hand, I try not to let my hypocrisy be seen, Not to get on my high horse
I try not to forget to add in a few light-hearted jokes and a touch of lip service I try to smile and show off my charisma whenever I can
Despite Taylor having some harsh inclinations towards the people around them, they always make sure to put on a smile and tell a joke so that the others around them will be more comfortable.
Bitter Chocolate Decoration Eat it all without saying a thing
They endure everyone else despite not enjoying their company much, and they stomach their own false behavior as part of their nice persona.
I try not to pointlessly expose myself, Not to talk about myself, not to understand myself
Taylor’s charade becomes so ingrained in them, however, that they start to fail to recognize what exactly sets them apart from the way they behave. Who they really are and what they want to do is something they lose sight of.
A life sentence of group participation, Sucking up to others yet again, saying things like "Hey, your bangs look totally super fresh and awesome right now!" And so on, despite never meaning a word of it, Every morning, every night- I've reached my breaking point
Taylor grows tired of appealing to those around them. Their breaking point is the point at which they decide to kill Paris, to no longer suck up to her and take back their life as their own.
And thus concludes the tale of two ill-fated besties. If anyone’s curious, Buried Alive by Rory Webley and Cute Girlfriend by Syudou are two Paris/Taylor coded songs that I didn’t quite think made sense for either of them individually!
Noah Walker —
“Poison” by Jet Black Alley Cat / “Goodbye Heaven, Come Back to Hell” by John
Honorable mentions: Bored (Rasti), Brad Pitt (COIN), Forever Stuck in Our Youth (Set It Off)
Noah’s songs focus on his difficulty with accepting his own struggles and weakness.
“Poison” uses a casual tone and simple sentiments to build a pretty good image of what Noah’s thoughts look like.
And oh, good Lord Think I'm buried in too deep And all my luck Has been making faces at me
Noah has a pretty bad time in the killing game altogether, and it’s in no small part due to lack of luck. The Loved Ones Roulette and Cellar motive, notably, both hit him despite only hitting a minority of the cast.
Let's bounce all night We're turning off my memory Oh, this club is our house Will my momma ever forgive me?
While Noah struggles pretty much immediately in the killing game, he prefers not to think about his problems, instead keeping up a lighthearted party atmosphere. Still, his doubts linger in the back of his mind. Both in his backstory and in the killing game, he certainly has doubts about his mother’s opinion of him.
Man, I clearly lost my track And all day long I've been trying to straighten my act
The farther he gets into the killing game, though, the more he starts to realize the problems with his philosophy. He starts trying to straighten himself out and tackle the issues that have been brewing in his life for a long time.
And I guess the snake got free 'Cause we got the poison on our tongues
While the titular line of the song is, in context of the song, meant to be about alcohol in the context of alcoholism (which works for Noah), it can also be about literal poison! Get you a song lyric that can do both.
“Goodbye Heaven, Come Back to Hell” is a closer look at how Noah feels at the end of his story in Chapter 5.
I laughed, feeling on top of the world I guess I was pretty satisfied But before I knew it This city had changed so much
Noah initially keeps up the lighthearted vibe, but the seriousness of the killing game hits him near immediately.
Kick after kick, I’m still thrown back by the same wall Once more, I find myself in this pitiful state After drowning in your rotten dream-drunk haze If you’ve got some cheap petty payback in mind, then be my guest
The killing game continues to beat him down, and his normal state of being is challenged day after day. With every loss, he tries to smile through it to ignore his own weakness, but he can’t convince himself.
I’ll grow stronger through the tears I shed I want to protect even this clumsy, awkward weakness of mine
Throughout the story, when Noah struggles, he doesn’t want to accept that it reflects on him being flawed. But by the end of the story, though, he begins to accept his emotions, wanting to use them to grow and survive through the end of the killing game.
To the countless fools out there who shine so brilliantly I’ll sing this with love So that I too can belong In a future where that place shines so brightly
He wants to become someone who can confidently stand alongside the others and face the future without so much fear.
Both of these tell Noah’s story pretty accurately. His hope for the future, insistence on refusing any negative emotion, and eventual recognition of his struggles are what tie these songs together.
Harper Young —
“Pushing Daisies (Oh My My)” by Friday Pilots Club / “SToRY” by DECO*27 and Kemu
Harper’s songs tend to fixate on ver feelings of not being enough when trying to support others.
For you, I'd give the whole damn lot But tell me, what good is all I got?
Harper is used to helping others by giving to them, providing what they cannot provide for themselves. Within the killing game, Harper has lost access to ver most common solutions. In that situation, ve isn’t sure ve’s enough. Still, ve tries ver best to support others, making it ver sole goal.
Yeah, he was shakin' a bit I kinda think that I was makin' him sick
Although Harper tries to support many people over the story, ver main focus is on Noah, both out of affection and out of recognition of his need for support. Noah, though, trying to not acknowledge anything is wrong, pushes Harper away. Harper then worries that Noah’s struggles might be exacerbated by ver presence, or, at minimum, that ve isn’t enough to counteract his strife.
'Cause I'll follow 'til I'm pushin' daisies You're on my mind Oh my, my
Harper’s endless dedication could be considered following ‘til ve’s pushing daisies. This can also be read literally, given that Harper and Noah die as a pair. Either way, Harper remains unwavering in ver goal throughout the story.
Speaking of the story, “SToRY” conveys a feeling of mutual care, where the singer offers reassurance to another by admitting their own struggles. This fits Noah and Harper’s dynamic well, given both of their hesitance with acknowledging that they, too, need support.
You’re carrying so many burdens, encouraging us on with a smile, supporting us, But I’m the one who hasn’t been able to give anything back to you, and for that, I’m sorry.
Harper feels ve can’t give enough to reciprocate others’ friendship or kindness towards ver. Despite being a kind and giving person verself, ve sees others’ actions as more genuine and worthwhile than ver own.
If the sight of someone dazzling is too bright for the current you, Then it’s okay for you to look down and be dejected. By the way, is it okay for me to cry as well? It seems like you won’t be able to get all those pent-up emotions out by yourself.
By the end of the story, Harper understands that just by simply offering ver time and support, ve can give those around ver enough. Ve isn’t limited to material offerings from afar; ve can sit with them and wait out the negative emotions together.
Patches of motivation sewn on with needle and thread
There are things I want to give, things I want to deliver
I’ll keep going until you cheer up, and I’ll be saved by that too.
Aside from the overall message, there are small moments in the song that fit Harper well too. The quilt ve sewed as the emblem of ver determination to help, ver longing to give others happiness, and ver eventual happiness with what ve can offer in the form of friendship embody the songs’ lyrics.
Jeff Breeze —
“Addiction Governance” by Six Kid / “Beat Eater” by Police Piccadilly
Honorable mentions: Insurgents by the Poolside (Denny), Stuck in Love (William Beckett), Daft Pretty Boys (Bad Suns), run run (sockittome), Crashing Into You (Eggtan)
Jeff’s songs make frequent references to the way his story ended – compelled to action by someone else/an otherworldly force. However, they also more specifically show off Jeff’s initial detachment and contrast it with taking action.
“Addiction Governance” is typically a song that discusses the singer’s addiction, likely to gambling or a substance, but for Jeff, the lyrics are reinterpreted to be about the dangers of the killing game and the lures of Davis’ talent.
Thought I could roll the dice Thought I could pay the price Saying it won't take me
Jeff, at the beginning of the killing game, believes in his instincts and abilities to evade bad situations. They don’t expect the killing game to be the end of them; they’ll make it out smoothly.
I know I walked in sin Addiction governing I feel them breaking in Temptation always wins
The lines about addiction and not resisting temptation have to do with Jeff’s overall worldview and behavior. He does whatever he feels like and doesn’t often use restraint. Whatever they want, they’ll take.
Think you were here all along Cause that taste been a chase Even when nothing is wrong
However, what Jeff wants eventually gets tied up in Davis’ talents, causing him to prioritize Davis over everything else. The want that selfishly drives his behavior shifts from himself to Davis, changing the way he interacts with the killing game, even when everything is otherwise peaceful.
I hear you calling out my name Don't worry I've always been this way I thought I'd take back everything And say I was out But here you are now
The end of the chorus depicts the scene of the Fifth Trial– Davis is distressed at Jeff’s actions, but Jeff insists it isn’t Davis’ fault. They’ve always been motivated by whatever they want. While he initially thought he’d escape the game, detached from everyone else, he finally found something he can’t run away from.
“Beat Eater” begins with more of Jeff’s usual groove.
I just realised that I’m now rollin’ Don’t wanna stop, there’s no need
Jeff is cruising through life, and even if the killing game is keeping him in, it doesn’t pose any real threat to him.
I get it, just because I was fascinated I have no intention to fall into such a crude trap I’m scared that this mundanity won't stop And if you think it frustrates me too then you’re correct
“Beat Eater” depicts Jeff at the beginning-middle part of the killing game where he and Davis are on worse terms. While they’re still attracted to and fascinated by him, they’re more at a distance, hoping that everything will pass. The feelings of attachment are an inconvenience– he should just be allowed to do what he wants without consequence.
Tell me, tell me To what extent are you going to save me? Speed those echoing voices up
However, as time passes, he starts to fall for Davis more and more, viewing Davis as an opportunity to turn his selfishness around. Is it possible Davis is the one Jeff has been looking for, as someone who he could really, truly care about?
Where did this all begin? Furthermore, such a merciless power too A fulfilled ambition takes over my body
Davis’ power takes them over and causes them to act.
The light’s overlapping, I’ll get comfortable with the pain I don’t want you to disappear somewhere
Jeff’s central motivation for his murder plan is the fear that Davis will die or otherwise be stuck in the killing game forever. They only want the best for him, and if that means breaking him out of the killing game no matter what, that’s what they’ll do.
Darlin' darlin' It's a style that I toughly chew over I’ll raise the curtain as I please “What is going on?” you say? It’s nothing surprising I fix my appearance, make that my answer and begin to make an impact
As with Addiction Governance, Beat Eater shows off Jeff’s attitude towards the entire situation– it’s his decision to prioritize Davis over himself and the others.
Both songs focus on that central truth Jeff believes about themself: they will always selfishly choose whatever it is that they want, without regard to the others. In this case, it’s out of care for Davis, manifested in the Chapter 5 Trial.
Antonia Cisneros —
“Vegas Lights” by Panic! at the Disco / “Heaven Dope” by NILFRUITS
Honorable mentions: Queen of Spades (Darwin Deez), KING (Kanaria)
Antonia’s songs both go into more of what was going on in her head throughout the killing game(s), both on and off screen.
“Vegas Lights” is a song that makes sense on a surface level for a first killer, but a lot of the lyrics develop additional meaning when you know Antonia’s role as the mastermind.
Oh, if you only knew What we've been up to I guarantee you'd keep it secret
From the very beginning, Antonia possesses more secrets and authority than anyone else in the game. Her and Cass fighting is no surprise; it’s the mastermind and the target she most wanted to eliminate through the game’s violence.
So give it to me now We're lost in a dream now Do it (five, four, three, two) one more time
Antonia’s role is to keep the killing games going and maintain the attention of her audience. She enthralls everyone into experiencing the killing game as entertainment, over and over again.
In the Vegas lights Where villains spend the weekend, the deep end We're swimming with the sharks until we drown
Antonia is always putting herself into high-risk situations; even though she generally can handle herself, any killing game could result in disaster for her. Still, her profession of choice has always been high risk, and she prides herself on her ability to stand in the ring with the other VIPs and their influence.
And we're all not here for nothing And we're bored with looking good We gotta be starting something Would you change it if you could?
However, Vanessa starts to falter, and asks Antonia to consider stopping the killing games. After the Sixth Killing Game concludes, Ellis questions her in the same way. What is she accomplishing by letting this continue? Doesn’t she want to stop it? It’s these questions that prompt Antonia to finally act.
The Vegas lights The lies and affectations, sensation We're winning 'til the curtain's coming down
Antonia can use her knowledge of how to work the crowd, the ins and outs of the killing game rules, the laws of the society she helps run, to get the ending she wants. With the other survivors, she puts a definitive end to the killing game; she’ll be on the winning side no matter what.
“Heaven Dope” gives more insight into how Antonia views the Resort and the people inside it.
There are no saints here, Only those who hold the power of life and death And patrons who hard-sell paintings of the "good guys" for cheap.
The Resort’s stronghold is a very money-oriented society. The killing games are at the center of it all, giving a focus to the shady dealings and exploitation that run rampant.
Did you think that after you struggled and went down, you'd finally get rewarded? Even such shallow and miserable souls, "all of them are welcome here".
Antonia views the cutthroat society as one that rewards victors and punishes losers; those who have lost will only continue to lose further. She has a position of stability for herself and Vanessa, and she’ll hold onto it.
While prevention is better than cure, even prevention could contain poison. It's the end of the other world! Just stay here forever.
Within the killing game, Antonia takes on the role of the first killer, encouraging others to follow suit to get the game going in a dramatic fashion. She punches through the group’s attempts at preventing any death from occurring, leaving them without other methods for escape in the Resort.
This life is peerless, it's all or nothing. This contest is do-or-die, don't depend on someone else for everything. It's about time you realized that No matter where you go, there's no peace.
The killing games progress, but Antonia’s resolve doesn’t waver. Life will always be a series of challenges, but she’s resourceful. She can overcome them and build her own sense of peace amidst the chaos.
Oh, how delightful and thrilling it must be. Then isn't that enough already? What more do you want?
Despite how perfectly she pleases the VIPs and the crowds, though, they always want more– something new, innovative, unexpected. Her resentment for them creeps, but she keeps it in check. That is, she tries her best to.
You don't need anything. [They complain, but do nothing.] Forget about the next life. [They can't even come up with an alternative.] Play your heart out as an innocent child. [To erase the abominable being from their sight,]
Antonia does everything for the VIPs, but they all only want more, only keep indulging in their vices. They critique and control her, yet they depend on her to keep everything running.
I'll protect everything that you are, [Even though they are sinners, they cry into their pillows when others speak ill of them.] When you turn to worthless, silent ashes. [From the safe zone, they say, "life is precious and ultimate".]
Heaven Dope ends when Antonia is still assisting the VIPs fully. Still, her resentment towards them lingers, there to be ignited when Vanessa calls her to action.
Vanessa Bravo —
“No Hands” by Attica Riots / “Luka Luka Night Fever” by Samfree
Honorable mention: QUEEN (Kanaria)
Vanessa’s songs centralize around the feeling of playing along with what’s going on around her, but eventually breaking free of that interpretation, mirroring her experiences with the killing games.
In “No Hands,” the song begins at the onset of that feeling:
When this first started, I couldn't get enough I fell in love with living just a little too much But nothing lasts forever, you've heard it all before The brutal winds of change are knocking at your door
While Vanessa initially enjoyed being an announcer for the killing games, once put into the killing game herself, she realized that her worldview as it existed couldn’t possibly hold up– the brutal winds of change, as it were, forced her to reconcile with the despair caused by the killing game.
No hands! I just keep riding around again to these broken-hearted beats, man
The chorus echoes Vanessa’s feelings of helplessness throughout the killing game; despite the fact that she realizes she doesn’t support it anymore fairly quickly, all she can do is follow along with everyone else’s struggles, hands off the wheel. In the same way the other contestants don’t know how to stop the killing game as participants, she doesn’t know how to impact it from the position of only being a helper.
The clocks are ticking, they talk behind your back They echo every second that you've wasted in the past But nothing lasts forever, you've heard it all before It's time to face your demons, they're knocking at your door
As her time in the killing game passes, though, she starts to feel the hands-off approach wearing on her, reminding her of all the killing games she didn’t even think to oppose. By the end of the story, she faces her demons, asking Antonia to help end the killing games for good.
In “Luka Luka Night Fever,” Vanessa moreso starts off before the Sixth Killing Game, back when she was hosting the other five.
Words flow from right to left You stare at the screen looking bored I'll always come to meet you across the dimensional wall So get your heart ready
Vanessa gets a lot of joy out of announcing because it allows her to connect with the audience and share the fun times with everyone. She’s the face of the killing games to the audience, and she’ll meet them on their screens to connect with them.
I understand you better than anyone So leave everything to me Don't be scared, let's dance together
Antonia comes to Vanessa with the VIPs’ idea to have Vanessa compete in the killing game. Although Antonia is hesitant, Vanessa encourages her; she’ll be there with Antonia to help, and they’ll be fine together! Because of her naivety, she assumes everything will go fine once the game begins.
Luka Luka Night Fever Keep time with the popping rhythm Forget everything that's bad
Vanessa willingly submits to the killing game, choosing purposeful ignorance to move along with its wishes. The crowds and excitement from the “night fever” compel her to keep moving forward.
My overflowing feelings are for you While it lasts, etch this time in your heart When the morning sun rises, it's goodbye Even looking at me with lonely eyes like that won't work
As the song progresses, Vanessa becomes more attached to the other contestants of the killing game. Still, she feels powerless to stop it.
I understand you better than anyone So reveal yourself completely Let's find together the reason we were born
By the end of the song, she commits to convincing Antonia to put an end to the killing games, appealing to their connection.
Both songs focus on Vanessa’s shift from spectator and commentator to active participant. They echo her involvement in the greater plot, as well as her feelings of helplessness shifting into the will to fight alongside the others to end the killing games.
Mark Miranda —
“Veils” by Moonfall / “Melty Land Nightmare” by Harumaki Gohan
Honorable mentions: Smoke Damage (Hi I’m Case), Red Windows (nostraightanswer), Cutlery (Yuukisan), Shoujo Rei (Mikito P)
Mark’s songs both start after the events of the Fourth Killing Game, which they previously won.
Burning up, overexposure You're pulling me close before it’s over Already drowning in deep thought When all the bridges collapsed between us
Mark’s friend, the previous Ultimate Lucky Student, sacrificed herself to let Mark win the Fourth Killing Game. Mark mourns the closeness they had, but as he’s left alone afterwards, his mental state becomes fuzzy once again.
Hiding in your perfect picture The loving go broke, thе mad get richer All you can do is be sorry For living insidе this allegory
Living within the Resort’s society was extremely difficult for Mark to stomach. After suffering so much at the hands of their captors, they had to play nice with them and watch as the killing games continued.
I don't want to think about it I know we've been left behind by your absent mind And we're crawling in line And we're crawling to find a dead end
Though Mark struggled when thinking about the previous killing game, the inaction was about as bad. Mark searched for a way forward, no matter how detrimental.
I keep falling into the night To look at what goes on out of our sight Lift the veils that cover our eyes Forget about death to fight for your life
Mark dives headfirst back into the killing game, looking for answers or a way to stop it all. Mark forgets both the death in their past and the fear of death in the future to fight for the lives of all future killing game contestants.
(Also, Genius lyrics has the line listed as “forget about death and fight for your life,” but I cannot hear it that way as opposed to “to” so I changed it.)
Burning up, overexposure You're pulling me close before it's over
But, the end of the killing game starts the same way as the previous one ended– Mark sacrificing themself for Ellis and the others.
“Melty Land” roughly begins at the time Mark “wakes up” when the BDA for Cass’ body plays.
One, two, three and up, one, two, three It’s about time you got up I’ll know if it’s your astonished face It’s the one you always make after all
Mark repeats the same experience they’ve done before: hearing the Body Discovery Announcement, investigating the crime scene, solving the Trial. Once they’re back up and in the rhythm, they set to work on ending the killing game.
One you can’t help but doubt, This inviolable starry night My fantasies from long ago Are the present you’s daydream
It’s in Mark’s nature to doubt the killing game and try to break it apart. Acting on their past desires they forgot, they work tirelessly to find the solution.
Today makes the 5000th time with you You saw a nightmare again, didn’t you
Over the killing game, Mark’s past trauma resurfaces, and they slowly regain their memories of the previous killing game. Each additional memory he recalls increases the pressure on him; he has to find a way for things to end differently this time.
One you can’t help but doubt, An extraordinary dinner time Don’t ever forget me for the rest of your life, okay?
The Chapter 5 feast takes place while Mark films their goodbye video to Ellis. Instead of things going as planned, though, the sound of the crashing chandelier alerts Mark to another round of heartbreak.
Even if time comes to a halt, it’ll just be a one-sided selfishness The 6AM alarm bell will be our time over
Mark sets out the next morning with sacrifice on the brain, saying goodbye to Ellis in person before enacting his plan.
I loved you but you’ll wake up Turn into zero, turn into zero I loved you but you’ll forget about me Turn into zero, turn into zero, turn into zero…
And, uh… as mentioned in the original character creation and death order document, Mark was originally going to die in Chapter 6 before I realized that sucked. So, the song kind of ends on the POV of Mark losing consciousness in the Grotto, just as Veils ended on Mark’s decision to sacrifice themself. But that didn’t happen! We are staying in the good timeline!
Davis Love —
“Valentine” by COIN / “HIBANA” by DECO*27
Honorable mentions: Cruel Power (The Happy Fits), No More Love Songs (Ottawa), Golden (Elysewood), Don’t Know How (Ricky Montgomery)
Davis’ songs, fittingly, are romance songs with an edge of doubt or tension contained inside of them.
“Valentine” paints a picture of someone who’s used to heartbreak and struggling to reopen themself to that world.
So you really wanna break my heart Keep me burning on the back light I saw you running around, that's fine But it's never that simple
Davis is used to preparing himself for heartbreak. Even seemingly simple situations can become reasons to worry, given his talent.
Believe me when I say I've tried You ever love something so much it hurts? You ever love something so much it hurts?
Davis repeatedly falls in love with others only for them to suffer tragic fates or leave him. He’s grown so fed up of trying that it’s difficult for him to open himself up to others.
Excuse me when your tattoo's fading away But you still wanna take your time You kidding me? you can't flip on a switch all at once
Second guessing all for nothing (yeah)
Eventually, though, Davis finds someone– Aidan– who doesn’t disappear, even as time passes and things change. His second guessing becomes irrelevant; Aidan proves Davis can trust him to stay.
“HIBANA” is a bit more assertive, drawing boundaries on love and on wanting someone who knows what they’re about.
Knock knock, a gentle knock, Embark on my heart’s recapture match. Delusions alone flash before my eyes, Pulse accelerating, just where could an answer be . . .
Despite Davis’ aversion to romance, he can’t help but get drawn back in by his strong emotions. When he first meets Aidan, he’s aware that he’s taken by him. The border between lovesick nerves and intense anxiety is hard to distinguish for Davis.
I don’t want to harbor a love that will never end – Come on, properly fill me more with anxiety. I’d like you to act your part at peekaboo – Come on, answer to {what I ask} more properly!
Davis still doesn’t want to take another chance on finding a love that has no expiration date, but still, as his relationship with Aidan progresses, he can’t help but feel some hope along the nerves. He’s contradicting himself; he wants Aidan to care more, to take things seriously, but also to leave the situation before it becomes irreversible for the both of them.
Aa, I don't like this. “There’s no way that’s true!” Aa, I don't like this. “You’ll understand, won’t you?” Shoot up that head -- just shoot it up!
The quoted lyrics in this part best fit the Chapter 5 Trial, with the first line being from Aidan and the second being from Jeff. Davis is uneasy the whole way through, and sees the inevitable loss finally knocking on his door.
It’s “incomplete”, I’ll say it time and time again. Amidst a love that missed hitting “NO”.
However, despite his expectations of his romances ending in tragedies, the verdict changes. Aidan turns the tides, and they both survive another day. Their love fails to fail; the expected ending never comes to fruition.
Davis’ songs reflect on his expectations and the way in which they’re dismantled in the story, allowing him to live freely and with love.
Aidan Ho —
“ANTI HERO” by SEKAI NO OWARI / “Gehenna” by Wotaku
Honorable mentions: Bored (sockittome), Traffic Jam (NILFRUITS)
Aidan’s songs both give insight into his very particular worldview. “ANTI HERO” focuses on his dislike of conformity and obedience.
You know I don’t give a damn about what's "right" Or pleasing everyone around me Cause I know this world that brought us life Wasn't made to keep everyone happy
Aidan determines what he does and what he believes for himself, no matter what anyone around him has said. The society he grew up in wasn’t for him, and he couldn’t find any joy in it. If there’s no happiness there, why should anyone follow along with its arbitrary rules?
You see I'm tired of trying to justify Every decision that I make If it's to save the people that I stand by You better believe what I say
Despite his aloof attitude, Aidan does want to help the others in the killing game to escape and resume their lives. He’s willing to make hard or controversial decisions to “ensure” the best outcomes, but he doesn’t like justifying it. He acts on their behalf without asking for approval.
Righteousness is a thing that I hate 'Cause it doesn’t do any good for anyone And everyone thinks everything is OK If they just obey
Aidan dislikes anyone who acts as an ultimate authority on anything (such as, say, Kennedy). He wants discussion to stay open and for people to be able to draw their own conclusions. Other people are content to just follow the leader, but the truth (in his mind) is that everyone needs to make each decision for themself.
"Stay in the lines, don't make a scene" Heroes try to tell us what’s right But when push comes to shove You'll know what I mean I’m ready to start a fight
This part best fits Aidan’s confrontations with Kennedy, although Aidan is definitely willing to fight for what he believes in in any circumstance (such as to Ellis in his fifth free time, or for Davis in the Chapter 5 Trial). He’ll always speak up for what he believes in, consequences be damned.
“Gehenna” focuses more on Aidan’s apathy and depression, as well as his arc to learn to care about his own life.
Hey, how are you? How's it going? Yeah, well, I've quit doing that kind of thing already Yeah, well, it seems like there's no prospect of recovery anymore Don't ask me anything
Aidan has more or less given up on trying to be a functional member of society, instead retreating into himself, believing there’s no path for him to be happy.
I wanted to realize the plain and simple And kill the ideal of what things are supposed to be
Aidan wants to believe that anything can be anything; assumptions and standards are just created to box people in. He tries to live with this core philosophy, though his results often aren’t what he wants.
Irrationality and loneliness, you don't have to hate them They all mean nothing We have to live
Aidan views life as something required of him. He learns to weather his negative feelings, though they never go away; they only make him feel emptier.
Happiness, the universe, you don't have to be skeptical about any of them They don't change We don't have to know
Over the story, though, Aidan begins to find things that do, in some way, make him feel and bring him joy. He isn’t sure what to do with those emotions; being apathetic is what comes naturally to him. Still, he does his best to examine the feelings as they come.
"I want to stay alive" I don't know why, but "I want to stay alive" It's this Bible called DNA You don't have to hate on your instinct and fears Nothing will ever change, anyway
Aidan, despite his confusion, learns that he does, in fact, want to live. He wants a chance to explore all the new experiences he didn’t believe he’d have. And, somewhere within him, there’s a base desire not to die. The killing game may be threatening, but he gains that resolve.
And that’s it for what I have to say about the One Shot cast’s songs! For the end of the playlist, I’ll pass Ellis’ section off to Accirax.
Ellis Ortiz —
“Breakout Star” by Shiabun / “Lone Sheep” by Peg
Honorable mentions: Chopsticks and Champagne (First in Flight), Rich Life (Eric Nally)
What’s up, everyone? It’s the Accirax coming atcha to write up the musical section of our beloved protagonist, Ellis. This is mostly because I’m the one who wrote Ellis and ultimately chose her songs, but also, just to help take a bit of the work off of Venus’ plate…
So, “Breakout Star” and “Lone Sheep.” Both of them contrast the glory of fame and success (exemplified by a swinging rhythm) with the panic and guilt that comes from accomplishing a monkey’s paw dream-come-true.
What is this I don't know what I've landed in Suddenly you care, she cares I care? Yesterday I was not a thing
Starting with “Breakout Star,” the lyrics are quite literal. Ellis doesn’t truly understand the danger of the killing game at the beginning, not realizing what he’s landed in. As the plot progresses, Ellis recognizes all of the hopes and fears their competitors in the killing game are experiencing, and, surprisingly, finds themself sharing in those feelings.
Ellis’ self esteem prior to the killing game was strikingly low, to the extent that he saw himself as more of a force of nature or loose collection of stereotypes than a real person. It’s only through learning how much they care about their friends in the killing game, as well as past and future victims of it, that they can really feel themself becoming “a thing.”
Ooo the lights are getting brighter There's too few DILFs here for my liking Keep losing track of time, all-nighter I think my tie is getting tighter right now
Some of “Breakout Star”’s lyrics fit Ellis comedically well, both in the sense that it’s comedic how well they fit, and that the ways in which they fit are comedic in nature. “There’s too few DILFs here for my liking” harkens back to when Ellis immediately thinks “DILF???” after learning of Jeff’s potential parenting, and “I think my tie is getting tighter” perfectly calls to mind Ellis’ pre-Trial portrait.
Am I turning into someone I'm proud of Far from the ground I'm losing touch Am I happy or just feeling I should be Time's passing through me, while I'm stuck
The sadder, slower breakdown near the end of the song is also very Ellis. Having a random drop in energy in which the singer communicates with the listener in complete honesty threw me back to Ellis’ more genuine monologues and conversations in Chapters 4 and 5.
Furthermore, the actual content of this section also fits Ellis: it wonders about her future and the kind of person she should be, as well as where her true emotions lie. Ellis expresses to Mark his feelings of being “stuck” in the Chapter 4 Grotto conversation. It’s more so the killing game that they feel is passing through them more than time itself, but given that the killing game is a chronological event (and even had the Ultimate Clockmaker as a killer), it works well enough.
Quit the dreaming, honey We just got the one life Live it with me Feel that kick We're alive
This refrain plays out three times throughout the song, and I find it an excellent encapsulation of Ellis’ growth. At the beginning of the game, the lyrics would read more like this: “quit wasting your time worrying, ‘cause you only live once! And I don’t know about you, but I’m kickin’ it, living my life well~” Living life is about feeling those kicks, and “we just got the one life” is nothing more than an excuse.
But, by the end, Ellis has their priorities straighter, and is dedicated to ending the killing game. The lyrics transform: “quit wasting your time getting lost in a fantasy, because we have to protect our valuable lives. You feel that kick, telling you to persevere? We’re alive, and we have to keep it that way, together.”
As for Ellis’ vocaloid song, well, if you’re at all confused about what it means in the context of Project Sekai, you can read the explanation I laid out here in this reblog. Was it too obvious that I had a perfect defense locked and ready to go? :P Well, Venus was actually the one who originally scoped this song out for Ellis, but I’ve definitely adopted it since then.
To paraphrase my reblog, “Lone Sheep” tells the story of a character whose exceptional skill sets her apart from the rest of her peers, but the miserable loneliness she feels after reaching such an accomplishment have her regretting her position.
I want to pretend to be a desperado “You think you could do that?” my self-hatred creeps Such a roar, so to speak, is a scapegoat It’s as if a curse has clung to me
In Ellis’ case, this success (or curse, as this lyric block puts it) is being the Ultimate Lucky Student. Although we learn by the end of the story that Ultimate Lucky Students are by no means guaranteed to survive a killing game, Ellis spends most of the game under the impression (or self-induced delusion) that they are. This immediate dismissal of her mortality is what allows her to spend much of the beginning of the game not fully acknowledging herself as a person or coming to grips with the killing game’s stakes. In turn, his talent is what later fuels his self-hatred with regards to callously letting his castmates die.
I think that the “scapegoat” mentioned throughout the song would be Ellis’ talent as well, if not the entire veneer of “the Ellis Ortiz.” “Being Ellis” is what Ellis uses as an excuse at the beginning of the game, when things are going well– “these people are crying or whatever, but not me, because I’m the Ellis Ortiz”– and what they cite as their greatest failure later on– “I’ll never be able to reach anyone, or end this killing game, because all I am is a fabulous, useless husk.”
What do you want to do after you end up all by yourself? This version of myself is a lonely one, so can you just let me be for now? You’re a solitary one– Right now, go far beyond them.
“What do you want to do after you end up [winning the killing game]?” is a big thematic question raised by One Shot, immediately implied by Ellis’ plan to win and brought to the forefront by Mark in Chapter 4. Ultimately, Ellis realizes that the fate of a solo winner is a lonely one that they want to avoid at all costs, but they fear that their fate in that regard is already sealed as the Lucky Student. Ellis doesn’t want to “go far beyond” Mark, Aidan, or any of his other friends; just like in the original tone of the song, surpassing the others is framed as a bad thing.
What do you want to do after you end up all by yourself? You’re still one of them, are you tryin’ to get cursed for the rest of your life? You’re a solitary one– Right now, go far beyond them.
I’m also happy to note that this block of lyrics changes right at the end of a song that reflects Ellis’ story excellently. Instead of being a lonely one, Ellis has cemented her place as “one of them,” no matter what curses she may face because of it. Literally, said curse is the threat of the survivors being forced into another killing game by the VIPs if Ellis’ gamble failed. But, because Ellis is a solitary one– the only one with the luck required to pull such a gamble off*– he’s able to go far beyond the VIPs to end the killing games for real.
(*I know that the story makes it pretty clear that Antonia is helping Ellis to make the card pull less of a “gamble” and more of a sure thing, such that luck isn’t actually required. However, Ellis is still the only one who has the reputation for having good enough luck that the VIPs would buy that the survivors might try the ploy without Antonia/until it was too late.)
Okay, that’s probably enough rambling from me. I hope these choices made sense now that I explained them. And I also hope that you’ve enjoyed listening to both of these songs. They are bangers.

Thank you for reading! This ended up being pretty long, but hopefully it was an enjoyable kind of long. The One Shot content is going to be drawing to a close soon, but I'm hoping this was a fun way to reflect on all the characters :)
Danganronpa: One Shot - Prologue & Chapter 1 Analysis
Hello lovelies and loveliers! Since DR:OS’ first chapter has officially closed out, I figured it’d be a good idea to touch base and make a little analysis of all its characters and the things that have happened before moving forward! … Is what I would say, if I’d gotten this out in time. Yeah I took too long and now CH2’s started already (_ _ ///). I’m not sure I’ll do this every chapter, seeing how long it takes me compared to how fast DROS updates, but y’know. We’ll cross that bridge when we get there :v For now, let’s talk about the sillies!
CWs: Daily Life and Deadly Life
The format here will be the same as the one I followed for my DRDT CH2 analysis. That is, start by talking about the general plot and the trial, and then go character by character, in ascending order of relevance for this chapter. Though, obviously, what characters are more relevant than others is subjective, but I'll try :v
However, there's a few extras this time around. For starters, back when all we had of the cast were a couple of drawings and symbols, I made some early predictions about what they would be like. Though I won't go over all the predictions, I will at least make some comments on my talent predictions, so there's that. Additionally, since we know DROS has an in-cast mastermind, I'll rank the characters based on how likely I find them to be the mm, and give a little reasoning for that. I didn't really think I had enough to say on that front for a separate post, so I'm sticking it here! With that said, let's get into it!
Daily Life & Deadly Life
I don't have a whole lot to say about the Daily Life section of CH1, since it's mostly composed of character interactions that will be brought up later. I do love the "talent show for secondary talents” idea, but the prologue deserves a bit more attention since it's the setup for the setting of the killing game.
The characters’ last memories of the outside include the start of the Tragedy (back when it hadn't left Japan yet), so we can't be too far from that even when taking the cast's mass amnesia into account. Fun fact, thanks to the CH1 Bonus Scenes, we can actually place the moment the cast’s memories cut off (assuming it’s all the same time barring Mark) at some point after 4/10/2011, which is the release date of "The Son of Neptune", a book referenced in the Robert & Taylor scene. It may also be before 7/10/2014, which is when The Blood of Olympus, the last book in that particular series of Percy Jackson books, released. I say that based on how Mark and Taylor talk about the Percy Jackson series, but I could be wrong on that. Also yes I’m using non-American notation for dates because the way the US does it, as usual, is stupid.
This killing game is also the sixth held in the resort, which is a pretty noteworthy thing even if we know very little about what its significance is. In terms of timeline, my current assumption is that this is happening after Junko's death in the THH killing game, meaning the thing is maybe being organized by Remnants of Despair, but I have very little reason to believe this beyond the fact that these people are doing a killing game in the first place.
Something that particularly interests me at this point is the place the killing game is happening in. See, at several points, it's been made clear that the organizers of this killing game really want to stick very closely to the Hope's Peak aesthetic. In particular, as Kennedy points out in her introduction, Ellis is not just called the “Ultimate Luckster” or something of the sort, but rather, they're the “Ultimate Lucky Student” even when they aren't a student at all. This is presumably because all Hope's Peak classes have an Ultimate Lucky Student, so when choosing the participants for the killing game, the organizers specifically chose someone to fit that role.
However, if they're that committed to the Hope's Peak aesthetic, why hold the killing game in a resort and casino, instead of a school? Did they not have access to a school, or even a school-like building? Is it simply because the mastermind wanted to be more comfortable through the course of the killing game? Is there another reason I'm missing? Is there even a reason? One could also ask why the organizers grabbed a bunch of adults, instead of high schoolers, but I find the question of the building a bit more pressing. In any case, it's not something that I feel can be properly speculated upon right now. We lack too much critical information. However, I will note it down as an interesting mystery moving forward.
But after peace comes a storm; Deadly Life time! The first case is a hell of a start, with the sheer brutality of a dismemberment setting the bar high for future trials in terms of how complicated the murder plans could get. Though I’m not really the biggest fan of gore only for the sake of shock, I think this case does just enough to instantly hook the reader with the premise of such a brutal method, without dwelling excessively in it and letting other parts of the case carry the mystery. The fact it happened before a formal motive announcement was also its own hook. Basically I like it :D
The mystery itself was fun, too! Nothing too crazy, which is expected of a first case, but things like the motion sensors and the ever present question of why the hell Cass left their room to go to the casino made for a pretty fun enigma to think about.
The trial was also very engaging, especially with how high the mini game to word ratio was. Pretty fun to play along with those things! Although I’m sending up a prayer to the creators’ Docs main page, there’s gonna be so many mini game docs by the time this ends xD The cast of One Shot is… not the fastest, presumably because the authors prefer a high ratio of minigames, but they make for a lot of pretty fun moments in the trial.
Finally, all the more introspective sections we get with Ellis every now and then are great, but that’s mostly because Ellis is awesome so I’ll get into it more in their section :v
Alright, now to get started on the characters!
Monoquin
Cool mascot! Though I hope you’ll forgive I don’t have much to say about him, seeing as so far he’s been more of a Thing facilitating the progress of the killing game than an actual character. Not a bad thing, he is what he is, and a mascot that’s actually pretty professional helps keep the focus on the cast in pretty much all scenes, which is a benefit.
Harper Young
-Original talent guess: Pacifist/Activist/Make-Other-People-Feel-Good-Person -Actual talent: Philanthropist -Talent prediction notes: Well the idea was there xD -Likes: Charities. Dislikes: Vineyards.
I mean, ve really doesn’t do much this chapter. Right now, all we really know about ver is that ve had run into Noah before the killing game doing charity work around his frat, that ve likes to knit, and that ve’s getting kinda restless not being able to so much to help people.
Noah [CH1, Page 41]: Yo, Harper? Harper: Hm? What is it? Noah: You wanna do something, or… something? You seem on edge. Harper: Oh, apologies. I suppose I’m not used to not doing anything. I’ll go grab my quilt.
(Note: All quotes from CH1 are cited with the page they're found in the full chapter doc)
This also gets reiterated a few times during ver Bonus Scene with Noah. In that scene, Noah also implies that Harper's not just rich, but a billionaire.
Noah: [CH1 Bonus Scenes, 8]: Yeah… I definitely didn’t have to struggle or anything, but I’m sure there’s a difference between upper middle class and literal billionaire.
That’s still quite a fair bit for the character who got the least focus in the chapter imo, which is cool.
I can see ver character going a few different ways, either breaking down from restlessness or the inability of helping those who die from the killing game. Ve's been relatively calm so far, but who knows how long that's gonna last.
On another note, what beef does ve have with vineyards. They don't seem like uniquely bad businesses from what I found on a few browser searches. Harper, what did the grapes do? ToT
-Mastermind Ranking: 7/16. Harper's actually on the lower end of the people I suspect a bit. While ve has less outright disqualifying lines (aka things the mm would never say) than those below ver, ve does seems genuinely worried about what's happening outside.
Harper [CH1, 2]: Even if it isn’t something I’m required to do, I have commitments I’m worried about letting down. There are people to help.
Question: What personal belonging from the outside would you bring into the killing game? Harper: “An update on how my foundations are doing would set my mind at ease.”
And while that could all be a lie, the extra detail that ve's restless and not all that happy in the killing game is enough for me to put ver relatively low on the list.
Robert Smith
-Original talent guess: Blank Slate/Regular Person/Guy -Actual talent: Normie -Talent prediction notes: Actually kinda proud of this one! -Likes: Pizza. Dislikes: Mosquitoes.
Robert is a very interesting character to have in a cast so full of weird-ass characters as this one (or any fangan cast really). He didn’t do much in CH1, per se, but his normality contrasted with everyone else’s… deal… certainly helps establish how no one here is all that well adjusted. Robert’s the most shaken up over Cass’ death, just on how gruesome the murder was, for example. And given how he talks about how impressive he believes the others to be based on his CH1 Bonus Scene, this does seem like it’s going to be a recurring thing for his character.
That said, there is also the fact that Robert seems to enjoy literature, what with him reading Percy Jackson and his secondary talent being reading a poem. And this means it’s time to go Literature Girl Insane (it’s funnier the third time! /ref), and see if there’s any symbolism in the literature my guy brings up.
The book referenced in his Bonus Scene, “The Son of Neptune,” doesn’t strike me as incredibly relevant… from a reading of the Wikipedia plot summary- look I’ve never read Percy Jackson you’re gonna have to deal with that.
There’s something to be said about how Percy being an outcast at the camp he arrives at or something could connect to Robert’s feelings about being an outcast in the presence of Ultimates (Taylor’s too), but that’s kinda all I could gather. The plot being about Percy being an amnesiac, if anything, would connect it more to Mark, unless Robert or Taylor have some kind of important memories missing as well. Or maybe I’m reading too much into it and “The Son of Neptune” just got picked because it’s a popular book that a normie would read and fits the time frame of DROS, who knows!
As for the poem he reads in the talent show, “The Road Not Taken”, it’s a little more interesting when applied to Robert. As I said in my First Impressions post for that particular part, the fact the poem itself is a bit open ended in interpretation means that it’s hard to know how to apply it to Robert’s character. However, here’s my current best guess:
The Road Not Taken shows a person in a fork in a road, who takes one of the paths and won’t return to take the other. In the moment, it’s clear both are equally traveled. However, in retrospect, the person claims “with a sigh” that they took the road less traveled and “it made all the difference.” Whether the difference was good or bad is left up to the reader, but the main thing to note is the fact that the person’s hindsight is flawed because neither road was actually traveled more or less than the other.
In his Bonus Scene, Robert says this:
Robert [CH1 Bonus Scenes, 3]: “I have to try so hard to pretend I’m feeling normal and not lose my cool, so that I can fit in with everyone else.”
So, Robert wants to fit in, he basically wants to be “normal” in a sense. Remember how the difference taking the road less traveled makes can be either good or bad depending on the reader? Robert would be afraid that taking the road less traveled, “not fitting in”, would make a negative difference. That means he always wants to take the other road, which is presumably what led him to be the Ultimate Normie.
However, keep in mind that both roads in the poem are actually equal. Robert does what he thinks is normal, not what is actually normal. Because “normal” is relative. In the killing game, moving on quickly from a death is “normal”, where as that likely wouldn’t be the case outside of this setting or with different participants. This sets up a possible arc of Robert learning to choose whichever “road” he wants without worrying about fitting in, because the concept of “fitting in” is sorta flawed in a sense. Cue parallels with Taylor (more on that later) and foils with Aidan, who as the Ultimate Contrarian would be representative of always taking the road less traveled, if such a thing exists.
Or maybe I’m reading way too much into this and the poem just got picked because of the irony of the Ultimate Normie reading a poem from the perspective of someone who believes to have gone against the norm. That’s also very possible xD
-Mastermind ranking: 4/16. It might shock you to see him this high, but it really shouldn’t. Robert doesn’t have any lines going directly against the possibility of him being the mm the way some other people do, and Tsumugi from V3 gives precedent to the idea that maybe we shouldn’t trust the “plain” ones. Plus, I could see some point about how during the Tragedy, it would be “normal” for someone to be obsessed with causing despair. The only reason he isn’t higher is his squeamishness at the sight of Cass’ corpse.
Noah Walker
-Original talent guess: Hellenic Scholar -Actual talent: Frat Boy -Talent prediction notes: I did pick up the frat bro vibes, but the Greek letters threw me off. I now know that represents his frat's "name", per say. The US is a very, very strange place. -Likes: Electric Guitar. Dislikes: Fights.
Similar to the last two, not much going on with him yet. He's talked about his dad disliking the idea of Noah failing out of college, and apparently has two sisters:
Noah [CH1, Page 2]: I don’t think my dad would be happy if I failed out of college…
Harper [CH1 Bonus Scenes, 8]: You said you had sisters, right? Noah: Yeah, two of them.
Plays guitar, played basketball in high school, doesn't get hangovers…
Grace [CH1, 58]: I’m surprised you don’t seem to be hungover, Noah? Noah: Oh, that doesn’t happen with me. Pretty cool.
And had met Harper before the killing game in charity events his frat set up. So, yeah :v
Unlike with Harper and Robert, I have few guesses as to where this guy's going character-wise. Genuinely no clue :p
Btw, I did try to research if his frat, Lambda Omega 𝚲𝛀 (I think? The capital Lambda is upside down on his pendant for some reason, but there's no other capital Greek letter that looks like that), and I found out something quite interesting.
I really have no idea how the US works, in the slightest. I couldn't make sense of half the info I was getting :p
Apart from that, while real life 𝚲𝛀 does in fact exist, I didn't see anything immediately related to Noah. So, if it's important, let it be brought up in the story itself xD
Finally, since I overanalyzed Robert’s poem in the talent show, I may as well do the same for the others. Though Noah’s pick of playing “Eye of the Tiger” isn’t too hard to understand. It’s a song all about ambition and passion, which is very popular with Noah’s general demographic. Basically it’s the exact type of song you’d expect a frat boy to play in a talent show :p
-Mastermind Ranking: 6/16. Everything I said about Harper applies to this guy as well. He's only higher because there's less instances of him disliking the killing game environment, aside from disliking the actual murder aspect of course.
Davis Love
-Original talent guess: Romantic. -Actual talent: Bachelor. -Talent prediction notes: Close, yet so far. -Likes: Wildflowers. Dislikes: Pick-up Lines.
Half these people have insane talents, and Davis’ is no exception. Anyone who is attracted to men will apparently be attracted to Davis, be it romantically or sexually or both depending on their sexuality. Certainly an interesting setup for a character, which we've already seen effects of with how uncomfortable he is when people flirt with him. It's worth noting he's pan and has had a girlfriend before:
Question: Most embarrassing experience? Davis: [...] I guess, really shortly before my junior prom, my girlfriend at the time…
So it's not like he's completely opposed to romance, he's presumably just had bad experiences. There's even a line where, after learning of the motion sensor trackers, Davis specifically is the one to bring up the question of why Cass was tracking their movements. While this could just be a coincidence, it's possible he's particularly concerned about the sensors because he's had some kind of experience with a stalker tracking his movements, as his talent would make that relatively likely. Maybe. We'll have to see.
Davis [Page 125]: …Cass was tracking us. Why would they…?
Though, on the topic of his talent, one thing I haven't talked about is the caveat that Ultimate Contrarian is the Ultimate Counter to Ultimate Bachelor. The talent meta goes crazy.
Davis [CH1, 13]: If someone wants some form of a relationship with someone, they want it with me. Aidan: Really? Aidan takes a seat at the table, entering our conversation. Aidan: I don’t think I’ve felt that way. Davis: Are you attracted to men? Aidan: Yeah? Davis: …Trans men? Aidan: Sure? Davis: …??? Ellis: Huh. That’s what happens when “Ultimate Contrarian” and “Ultimate Bachelor” collide, I guess.
(Oh yeah Davis’ trans btw. Cool!)
What's interesting is that, maybe because of this or maybe not, Aidan and Davis seem to be getting set up as some sort of duo? The aforementioned "Contrarian vs Bachelor” scene is not the only time they're seen together. The two of them were apparently just wandering around together before the "Motive TBA” scene, and while they were investigating separately, they were also the only people in the Customer Service Desk during the Cass case investigation.
Narration [Page 62]: As I sit on the couch, I notice Aidan and Davis approaching the Movie Theater. [...] Davis: Oh, hey Ellis. We were just wandering around.
Narration [Page 84]: … I head out, and travel down to the Customer Service Desk. I see Aidan and Davis separately looking around, and am drawn to Davis first.
Davis is also the first person to compliment Aidan's clarinet skills in the secondary talent show.
Narration [Page 23]: Once it ends, people start clapping, and Aidan gets off stage as fast as possible. Davis: That was pretty great, Aidan!
The scene about the motive strikes me as particularly noteworthy, because Aidan is not exactly the most social person around, so seeing him just "wander around” with someone is interesting. Where this particular pair is gonna go is a fantastic question, especially because I'm not even 100% it is a notable pair, but I'm interested in seeing it! Or- not seeing it if I'm hallucinating its existence, I guess!
Finally, for your regularly scheduled song overanalysis! In the talent show, Davis sings ¨Mine¨ by Taylor Swift, which is by all means a pretty standard love song as far as I can tell. Possibly the most interesting part of the song for our purposes, though, is a section where the singer and their lover get into a fight, and while the singer believes they're about to break up, their lover actually tries to mend the relationship. It's possible this hints to the reason why Davis is a Bachelor; for some reason or another, his lovers keep getting into fights with him and always break up after. Thus, Davis singing this song could be expressing his desire for a partner who is more understanding or forgiving.
However, that´s a pretty insane reach even for my standards, and I don't think anything else we’ve seen implies it, so I currently don’t think there’s much of a connection between Davis and the song beyond it being a love song :v
-Mastermind Ranking: 3/16. If you're surprised he's this high, I am too. He's kinda just here because I can't point to any single line that implies he's not the mm, something that I can do for the people below him. I don't really think he's that likely to be the mastermind, though having the mm be the guy who dislikes pick-up lines and whose talent is deeply connected to romance and sexuality could serve as a good foil to the protagonist we got going on, in some way, which is an okay-ish argument assuming the creation process of DROS even allows for the mm to be picked with the protag in mind (I got no clue :v).
Grace Thomas
-Original talent guess: Mechanic. -Actual talent: Clockmaker. -Talent prediction notes: N/A. -Likes: Efficiency. Dislikes: Being late.
We got a fair bit of backstory from Grace this chapter, and frankly not much else. Still cool stuff!
We learnt from the little round of Never Have I Ever that their parents are strict and kinda overbearing, that they graduated high school early (well, got a GDE, don’t yell at me if there’s differences I’m omitting), etc. One thing that gets repeated a lot is how Grace absolutely loathes wasting time, hence them getting a GDE and such. We also know from the Prologue that they have a boyfriend, and from a question we know his name is Justin, he’s very popular, and they met in high school. All very neat stuff!
I… don’t have much else to say here. There’s certainly something to be said about their propensity for going as fast as possible when contrasted with people like Jeff, who seem to take stuff with a lot more chill. Grace’s main fixation right now seems to be escaping as fast as possible, so we’ll see how that develops in the future!
Well, seems to be.
-Mastermind ranking: 2/16. They’ve dropped one spot from my post-prologue predictions, but they’re still a pretty good contender in my mind. Everything I said in my original Predictions Game post in terms of themes and the like stands. Though, to be fair, we haven’t really seen the themes I speculated based on title and prologue lore alone come into play yet, so maybe the point truly is moot.
The only big sticking point some of you might have with them being the mm would be the fact that they seem committed to escaping, but that could easily be faked. It could actually be a decent strategy to discourage others from investigating escape routes themselves, if they think Grace is on it and can’t find anything. All they’d have to do to discourage looking for escape routes is say something like-
Grace [CH1, 8]: Though, I’ll hand it to the runners of this game, they’ve done a good job of eliminating any trace of an exit.
Yeah like that.
But beyond that, there’s also one other, particular reason Grace still stands above the others as an mm candidate in my mind, which they share with #1. I’ll explain when I talk about said #1.
Paris Hall
-Original talent guess: Tea Maker or Queen/Princess -Actual talent: Gossip -Talent prediction notes: Not even close xD -Likes: Acrylic Nails. Dislikes: Windy Days.
Our first FTE haver! Though in true Gossip fashion, Paris hardly gives out info about herself, and prefers to discuss literally anyone else's business. All we really know about her personally is that she has a big following online, and apparently friends, though as far as I remember she's never mentioned any family.
As for the happenings of the killing game itself, her reveal of Antonia and Cass’ beef could be the first of many instances where Paris’ love for gossip develops conflict amongst the group, which would be very interesting to see. But perhaps more interesting than that is her reaction to Cass’ murder. Or, rather, the lack of one. Paris behaves pretty much the same during the trial than outside of it, giving little indication that she‘s even all that worried about the whole thing. I don’t exactly have any real guess as to why this happens (assuming she’s not the mm), but I’m very curious to find out.
Finally, there’s her relationship with Taylor. Although Paris keeps tabs on everyone, she’s taking a particular interest in Taylor and calling them her “bestie”… for some reason. Allegedly, the bond comes from shared music taste and their talent show performances, which is I suppose a valid reason to start a friendship. But given my use of “allegedly”, you can probably tell that I don’t trust this all that much.
Paris sketches me out, and this isn’t new. That was part of the reason I thought her to be the CH1 killer after the investigation’s end, after all. Probably doesn’t help that Ellis constantly inner monologues about how dangerous she is due to her information gathering skills, and that Antonia clearly believed Paris to be on her wavelength during their Prologue Bonus Scene. And to be clear, Antonia’s wavelength is not somewhere trustworthy people are found. Hence why I’m worried Paris’ intentions with Taylor aren’t fully innocent. Whether she’s trying to get an ally in preparation for a trial where she’s the blackened, or creating an easy target for her to kill, or something else entirely, there are many very dangerous reasons Paris could have to befriend Taylor like that.
Of course, though, it’s also entirely possible that I’m insane and that Paris genuinely just wants to befriend Taylor for the sake of friendship itself. And generally that’s what I’d assume, as I personally like to try and be trusting of fictional characters, but idk. Maybe I just can’t handle a bad bitch making friends, and that one’s on me. Who knows!
Though, on the topic of the talent show, Paris danced to "Toxic". Continuing to overanalyze these picks… this one doesn’t paint a great picture. "Toxic" features the singer speaking to someone whose love is addictive and “toxic”, which I could see being recontextualized to imply something about Paris’ relationship with her fans (be it them being addicted to her or her being addicted to them), but… Well. As of right now, the most straightforward interpretation could be that Paris is a “toxic” friend to Taylor. Just in case we needed more red flags there.
Then again, I could always just be reading into these things too deeply. Maybe venus just likes the song and there’s no further meaning, like that thing that happened with Wizardry 8 during pre-release lol.
-Mastermind ranking: 1/16. Yep. I mean. I don’t trust Paris. This has been established.
Her lack of reaction to murder is one of the biggest red flags here, of course, but her talent would also make it easy to gather info on the contestants for things like the “likes & dislikes” section of their profiles and potential future motives, and her propensity for creating conflict could be useful if DROS is going for the “televised killing game” angle. In the Cass-Kennedy Bonus Scene, Kennedy brings up that since the mm revealed their existence to the cast, they probably want them to speculate of who the mm is, and Paris revealing Cass and Antonia’s cross-suspicion could be helping to do just that.
Kennedy [CH1 Bonus Scenes, 12]: If the mastermind wants it to be known that there’s a mastermind, they probably want it to inspire drama. What better way to do that than making accusations public and starting feuds?
The fact that one of the big narrative themes we’ve been seeing so far is ”secrets” (which I'll discuss mainly in Cass and Antonia's sections) could also give a foundation for the mm to be the Ultimate Gossip.
Finally, and this is the big thing that really puts Paris above the rest in my mind; I don’t see any arc she’s going through that would be invalidated by her being the mm. Robert’s struggles to fit in, Davis’ deal with relationships and the such, Taylor’s self-image issues (we'll to those in their section), all would be kinda moot points if they’re the mm. Like, I’m sure there’s a way to make them work, but it’d be a bit difficult. Meanwhile, the main thing Paris has got going on is her relationship with Taylor, which can easily be spun into part of Taylor’s arc if Paris ends up being the mm.
This is the quality that Paris only really shares with Grace that puts both of them at the top of my list, the one I alluded to in Grace’s mm section. The reason Paris is slightly above them is… honestly just vibes xD I trust Grace more than I trust Paris, that’s the whole reasoning there. They’re actually somewhat equal candidates in my mind.
I could be wrong, of course, but well. They’re predictions for a reason!
Kennedy Rey
-Original talent guess: Conspiracy Theorist. -Actual talent: Conspiracy Theorist. -Talent prediction notes: B) -Likes: Mysteries. Dislikes: Skeptics.
Fellow insane people from Tumblr, meet our spitting image. Kennedy spends the entire chapter doing what she does best: being completely insane and constantly throwing out theories about the mm. He’s insane in a pretty fun way, and it’s always fun to have them on screen!
We learn little about Kennedy’s life outside the killing game, other than the fact that they know a little of self-defense because they’re extremely paranoid. We don’t really know what she even does with her life, frankly. But Kennedy has enough stuff going on in the killing game itself to make up for it!
As of right now, Kennedy has several noteworthy relationships with other characters. First is his working relationship with Vivi, the only person who seems to genuinely hold Kennedy’s opinion in high regard. And of course they do! She also knows what it’s like to be disregarded as insane because her methods are unorthodox, being a Mad Doctor and all. Makes me wonder if there’ll be some foiling between the oh so normal Robert and the “Mad Duo” (which is what I’m calling them now and you can’t stop me).
Cass was also a theorizing buddy to Kennedy in at least one scene, but she always seemed to be more interested in investigating on her own. See: not telling anyone about the trackers or them spying on Antonia. Their Bonus Scene has Kennedy attempting to ascertain whether Cass would be a good theorizing buddy after her whole beef with Antonia, suggesting that Kennedy genuinely enjoys having other people to discuss their theories with. Pretty fun! Shame Cass died :p
And of course, Kennedy’s legendary beef with Aidan. By virtue of being the Ultimate Contrarian who hates assumptions and uncontested opinions, Aidan is basically diametrically opposed to Kennedy, and their mutual dislike is made apparent all across the chapter. Although Aidan ends up usually looking like the one in the right in comparison to Kennedy, I’m very interested in how this rivalry is going to develop in future chapters!
-Mastermind ranking: 12/16. Way too committed to finding the mm for it not to be genuine. Sure, by his own logic from the Bonus Scene this would actually make him suspicious, but come on. There’s a limit to how much a mastermind would try to find the mastermind, surely xD
Taylor Long
-Original talent guess: Actor -Real talent: Impressionist -Talent guess notes: The comedy and tragedy masks fooled me T_T -Likes: Movie theaters. Dislikes: Rock bands. -Notes: Can I ask about the rock bands? Lol
Taylor has self-image issues, and it’s possibly the clearest issue any of these characters have lol.
Taylor [CH1 Bonus Scenes, 2, to Robert]: I try to fit in, but at the end of the day, I’m just me, you know? The only special part about me is when I’m doing an impression of someone else. Other than that, I’m just as regular as you.
Like, I could find other examples, but this one’s probably enough to get the point across, no? Taylor clearly doesn’t have the highest opinion of themselves, so they channel other people’s energy to get the confidence they need to get their opinions out. All throughout the trial, they continuously make impressions of Cass and occasionally Kennedy to bring up their ideas. During their FTE, they constantly try to accommodate for Ellis’ tastes, constantly asking what she wants to do and what her friends are usually like.
Ellis [CH1, 38]: They, uh… they’re wild, and crazy! Always down to party. Super rich and popular, too. Taylor: Oh, I see… They think. Taylor: It really is kinda surprising that you like me, then. I mean, I definitely can do those things, but it takes me a little while to come out of my shell… [...] Taylor: Sorry, I just realized I kind of took over the conversation. Was there something you wanted to talk about? Ellis: Hmm, not particularly. Actions speak louder than words. Taylor: Oh! Then, um, do you want me to do something…? Ellis: Do you want to do something? Taylor: Um… whatever you want is fine with me!
And of course, Taylor somehow thinks that making an impression of Antonia directly after her execution is a great idea to cheer Vanessa up, instead of comforting her with their own words.
Vanessa [CH1, 152]: …Toni… Taylor: Please don’t be upset… um… Taylor goes over to Vanessa and gently places a hand on their upper arm. Taylor: “Don’t be upset, darling–” Vanessa: Stop that!
You know, like a fucking insane person-
Right now, we mostly have setup for some kind of arc about these self-image issues, and I’m very curious to see where exactly they’re going to go with it. This how there could be some parallels with Robert and the like, which we’ve already seen explored to some extent in their bonus scene.
The other main arc Taylor’s got going on is the Paris thing, but I’ve already covered that in the Paris section, so. Yeah.
Finally, for the last of the talent show song pick analysis, Taylor dances to “Born This Way”, making a sort of impression of Lady Gaga as they did. Of course, this further hints at their self-esteem issues, as they don’t seem to believe to have any talent beyond their impressions, which makes the decision to pick a song about self love all the more ironic. And yes, I believe that’s why they lip sync to this song specifically, because their presumed character arc is likely to be about self-love.
-Mastermind ranking: 5/16. They have a few lines in the Prologue that would read slightly weird in the context of Taylor!MM, but nothing outright disqualifying. That, combined with the idea that the killing game could be an “impersonation” of Hope’s Peak and maybe specifically the THH killing game, are the only reasons Taylor is this high. There's not much else here so far :v
Vivian Mitchell
-Original talent guess: Surgeon/Doctor -Actual talent: Mad Doctor -Talent prediction notes: Well. Close enough? -Likes: Experimentation. Dislikes: Supervisors.
Vivi’s great! She’s just a pretty fun character. This chapter, she doesn’t really do much beyond being Kennedy’s sidekick and performing an autopsy, though I decided her involvement in the actual case and investigation warranted being a bit later in the post than those before her (look this format is far from an exact science xD). I’ve already covered said connection with Kennedy, and the autopsy thing is more a trial thing than a character analysis thing- well, other than saying this:
Vivi [CH1, 90]: I mean, I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t done a few Vivi-sections before, but on a person…? Robert: …Do you mean dissections…? Vivi: …Yup!
Which… implies she thought Cass got dismembered while they were still alive? Assuming Vivi’s using the usual meaning of vivisection (dissections on things that are still alive) and isn’t just making a confusing pun. But their autopsy should have determined that wasn’t the case, I think, so.
Look, confusing puns aside, the point is that Vivi has probably done some kind of vivisections on animals as party of the experimentation their profile says they like. At least, that’s my current theory on why they said that.
One other thing: Vivi seems to be the character who is most often pushing the idea that someone else should be coming to rescue them.
Vivi [CH1, 3]: Okay, yeah, or our families or friends could, like, do something! What, you really think all of your loved ones would straight up accept you were missing and not look into anything themselves…?
Vivi [CH1, 65]: I mean, someone’s gotta be looking. The question is whether or not they can actually rescue us, and if so, how soon.
Combined with some things said in CH2 Part 1 (I really took too long to write this :v), it seems Vivi has a pretty good relationship with her family, which is… something!
Vivi’s definitely have some other stuff going on, though. So far, we only have vague indications on what exactly puts the “Mad” in her Mad Doctor talent, so I could see that being elaborated on later, and her fixation with no one dying around her that we saw in the Prologue is something that could certainly develop into an interesting arc. Overall, pretty curious about them!
-Mastermind ranking: 11/16. The main reason Vivi’s this low is the fact that they resent their Ultimate title.
Vivi [Prologue, 24]: It’s such a judgmental way to put the Ultimate title! I just do what I think is gonna work! And it always works. So, if you or anyone you know is ever in danger of dying or anything, let me know
Were she the mm, she would have no reason not to just call herself the Ultimate Doctor instead. This, combined with their team-up with Kennedy to find the mm, makes it highly unlikely that they’re the mm in my mind.
Aidan Ho
-Original talent guess: N/A -Actual talent: Contrarian. -Talent prediction notes: N/A. -Likes: Pop rocks. Dislikes: Assumptions. -Notes: One of the most random likes here I think lol.
For me, Aidan’s possibly one of the most fascinating characters in a cast full of fascinating characters. You’d think his constant questioning of everything and everyone around him, combined with his generally uncooperative attitude, would make him a relatively unpopular character amongst the cast (beyond possibly Davis as discussed earlier), but he manages to not piss off too many people simply by being a paragon of common sense in the crazy people place. Well, other than Kennedy, as I've mentioned. Aidan also strikes me as one of the smarter characters, and thus has a fair amount of cool moments in the trial.
Aidan [CH1, 134]: …[Cass was] careful with their introduction, huh…? Davis: What do you mean? Aidan: Before Cass gave me her name or her talent, she led into the words “Ultimate Agent” by talking about other people’s work. They were making sure that I was already thinking about fucking commerce by the time they had to say it.
(By the way, I just noticed this now on a re-read, but why "fucking commerce"? Is he that pressed about being manipulated and lied to? Interesting character tidbit)
Aidan [CH1, 141]: Because you’re not backing it up. If belief is the only thing you’ve got, then it makes it seem like belief is the only thing there is.
Robert [CH1, 143]: She’s… making a lot of good points. Maybe we should listen to her…? Aidan: No way. Davis: Huh? Aidan: She’s cornered. Do you really want to let her manipulate you when she’s like this?
(Speaking of his apparent distaste for manipulation)
And his reaction to Antonia’s execution is fun.
Aidan [CH1, 151]: …Glad that’s over. Vivi: How can you be at all glad right now? We just watched someone die! Right in front of us…! Aidan: What, you wish she was still in the process of dying…?
That weird disregard for the horrifying shit he just witnessed is possibly an extension of the views he expressed in his FTE.
Aidan [CH1, 6]: I know other people care, and I can respect that. He scowls. Aidan: I really don’t care what happens with any of this. So, if other people do, good for them. For now, what I know is that I’m here. That’s all. Ellis: Exactly. You’re here! You’ve got the world at your fingertips, what with that weird Customer Service Desk thingy! You gotta figure out how to enjoy yourself! Aidan: I appreciate how unconcerned you are despite everyone else being all moody, but… no way. Either we’ll get out of here, or we won’t. In the meantime… it doesn’t really matter.
I decided to put the full quote there because it really is very strange. Aidan’s another character whose life outside the killing game is still a mystery to us, but perhaps that is because he doesn’t feel he has anything to return to. He just seems fundamentally uninterested in everything, up to and including his own life. Sure, he didn’t say he had no interests, but he may as well have. Not caring about what happens during the killing game is a very unique perspective, to say the least!
The idea Aidan really don’t give a fuck is further reinforced by the Scrum Debate:
Aidan [CH1, 113]: Like any of you want to stay. Anyone could have a motive here. That’s just how the killing game goes.
Any of you, not any of us. See the difference? Aidan probably wouldn’t mind escaping, but he doesn’t seem to mind staying, either.
Obviously this raises a lot of questions as to how Aidan came about this mindset in the first place, and whether or not he’ll grow out of it during the killing game, but right now we lack the tools to figure those things out. What we can discuss is the way this parallels other characters’ perspectives, though.
Be it Grace and Jeff’s desire to escape as fast as possible because everything that interests them is on the outside, or people like Harper and Noah’s desire to get out to return to their prior commitments, or Kennedy’s wholehearted investment in every mystery of the killing game (and yes Aidan and Kennedy’s beef runs really deep), or Ellis’ self-proclaimed (and probably fake) disinterest in the others as anything other than eye candy, or Antonia and Cass’ interest in keeping their secrets throughout the killing game… Turns out everyone has a different perspective in how they feel about the killing game, so a character who doesn't care at all (at least, that’s what they claim) stands out pretty significantly, in a way that helps bring out the others’ different interests and the things they’re focused on.
Basically I really like Aidan and I can’t wait to see how their mindset is explored/developed :D
-Mastermind ranking: 8/16. Aidan’s general disinterest in absolutely everything could be spun into some strange kind of mm who’s just going through the motions, I guess, but it doesn’t strike me as particularly likely. Realistically should be higher, especially given his dual colored hoodie split down the middle as the black and white of the Mono color scheme, but in a sense he strikes me as too confrontational, too early. Sure, he’s not as confrontational as someone like Byakuya, but he still ends up coming off as slightly antagonistic at times just by virtue of always going against the current as the Ultimate Contrarian, and as accirax eloquently put it in her own mm predictions for other fangans (Eden’s Garden & DRDT):
…wow, the mildly antagonistic character was actually a really antagonistic character all along! It just doesn’t seem like enough of a dramatic hook to me, I guess?
Again, Aidan isn’t the most antagonistic character ever, but I still think the phrase applies. Not to say that it couldn’t work at all, just that it’d be harder to pull Aidan!MM as opposed to the other options higher than him.
“Mark" Nolastnamegiven
-Original talent guess: ??? -Real talent: ??? -Talent guess notes: Yeah this one was easy. -Likes: Soft fabric. Dislikes: Physical confrontation.
Taylor [CH1, 137]: Are either of you worried about the fact that that leaves you as the only two suspects? Like, at all…? Antonia: Hm? Not particularly. Mark: Obviously I’ll have to prove my innocence, but from my perspective, it’s nice to know who the killer is.
Members of the jury, these two are awesome.
If there’s any character who truly stole the spotlight during the majority of the Deadly Life section, beyond those actually involved in the murder (and Ellis), then that character is Mark. While they didn’t really do anything in Daily Life beyond repeat a few times that they don’t remember shit from before the killing game, their notable “locking in” during the investigation and subsequent trial is quite an interesting development for them. Evidently, whatever their talent was, it seems it gives them some form of edge when it comes to investigating. That obviously brings Kyoko to memory, though Mark doesn’t seem to be quite her level of Detective, which is cool. I like that the few brain cells we have are a bit more spread out in this cast.
We also got a couple of really cool character moments from Mark’s “partial awakening”; I’m particularly obsessed with the calm with which they handled the Third Party Analysis, as already quoted, and the reintroduction with Ellis at the end of the chapter.
Ellis [CH1, 154]: Yeah. You seem much more aware than when we first met.
Really brings forth themes of renewal and the like. I really wonder if the fact that Mark is essentially getting a second chance to discover their abilities, after doing it once and forgetting through the killing game amnesia, will somehow play into the idea of “One Shot” as “one opportunity.” We’ll have to see ig.
Finally, because obviously I can’t talk about Mark without bringing this up, what is their talent, anyways? It’s most likely somewhat connected to their detective skills, but you might think there’s no way to narrow it down further than that. However, there may be a few hints we can use, alongside with the principle… of “The Funniest Possible Answer,” which states that a theory can be compelling just by being funny, if nothing else.
Take a look at this post, specifically the Mark answer.
Question: If DROS characters had the talents of the cast of Project: Eden's Garden, which one would each character have? Mark: Ultimate Pro Gamer.
Now, there’s nothing inherently interesting about this. Matching talents across fangans is always gonna be difficult, and not all of them are gonna fit very well (see: Fencer Vivi or Ship Captain Kennedy). However, there’s another post which makes me a bit more curious about this particular answer:
Question: What's your favorite animal and why? Mark: “I don’t remember, sorry…” [If allowed to, Mark would pick a Pokémon, and therefore Bulbasaur. If asked for a real animal, the answer would be a penguin.]
A Bulbasaur, of all things. Everyone else picked real animals as a first choice, but not Mark. Mark picked a video game creature. Combined with the previous answer, it almost makes it seem like Mark had a very profound interest in video games before losing their memories. Perhaps… enough interest to be an Ultimate of the video game variety?
To be clear, I doubt they’re straight up the Ultimate Gamer, because based on their behavior during the trial, there’s still presumably some form of connection with mysteries. Which gets me to a secondary point, which is: are Mark’s clothes really what they were wearing before the start of the killing game? No one has commented on having had their clothes changed, so I presume they’re wearing the last thing they remember wearing. But Mark has no way of knowing. I bring this up because Mark has an accessory with a question mark in their design, which makes sense with them being the Ultimate ???, but not outside the killing game. Unless, of course, their actual talent already had a connection with mysteries.
Hence, we reach my current guess for Mark’s talent: Ultimate Mystery Video Game Player. Or something like that. Could also be something like “Video Game Puzzlemaster” or something, especially because I wouldn’t exactly classify Pokemon as a mystery game, but getting the exact wording right on these things is always almost impossible, so.
Although, while we’re here, I may as well bring up the possibility that Mark may have a role similar to the Ultimate Survivor from V3, and they’re the sole survivor of the killing game directly preceding DROS. I bring this up because of Rule #7 from the E-Handbook:
Rule #7: The blackened may only kill a maximum of two people during any single killing game.
This rule’s wording about “any single killing game” accounts for the possibility of someone having competed in a previous killing game, implying we could be looking at such a situation. Of course, we have no indication of who that would be (everyone has missing memories, not just Mark, after all), but I’m bringing it up with Mark because there’s canon DR precedent for this happening with the Ultimate ??? in Rantaro. Doubt it’s the case, since I’m not sure venus would want to repeat such a plot twist, but you know.
-Mastermind ranking: 9/16. Mark marks (heh) the start of the more plausible guesses in the list, as there’s less things going directly against the idea that they could be the mm. The spots directly below Mark, such as Harper and Noah, may have one or two lines that would read weird if they’re the mm, but I still find them more plausible than Mark simply because Mark being the mm feels… odd, y’know?
There’s many ways the mm could disguise themselves that draw way less suspicion than calling themselves the Ultimate ??? and pretending not to remember anything before the killing game. That also includes the possibility that they’re the mm but still genuinely erased their memories, because that plan would be kinda insane without something like Divine Luck from that fangan that I don't want to name so as not to spoil anyone. Neither idea is impossible, hence why Mark is still higher than many of the others, but it requires a few more explanations than those who rank even higher.
Vanessa Bravo
-Original talent guess: Singer. -Actual talent: Announcer. -Talent prediction notes: I tried :p -Likes: Crowded areas. Dislikes: Minimalistic designs. -Notes: Who likes crowded areas???
As the reason that the talent show even happened at all, Vanessa is to be thanked for giving us some of the sillier moments before shit hit the fan. Quite a lovely person overall, though we know little of her life outside the killing game for now. We do know she has a sister, though!
Question: What object would you bring from the outside into the killing game? Vanessa: “I want my sister…”
Speaking of sisters, Vanessa got hit with one of the most severe cases of Danganronpa Syndrome (where characters get attached to each other extremely quickly to make the death of one of them more impactful to the storyline) I’ve ever seen. Less than a week in, she’d already adopted Antonia as her surrogate big sister. This is consistent with Ness’ constant push to make the killing game as comfortable as possible, setting up the talent show for example.
Vanessa [CH1, 8]: …Aw, are you guys seriously on the whole escape thing again already?! Grace: What else would we be doing? Vanessa: I dunno, having fun? This place is pretty cool, if you actually take a look around! Why do you wanna leave so fast?
And if Ness’ goal is to make the killing game as comfortable as possible for herself and others, and Antonia and her remind each other of their respective sisters, well, it’s as Antonia says:
Antonia [CH1, 43]: It’s only natural to take comfort in the things that remind you of home, isn’t it?
I do wonder how this attitude of trying to find comfort and fun inside the killing game will develop now that things have gone horribly, horribly wrong. Certainly something to look out for.
Another character trait I enjoy is Ness’ very proactive personality. She’s the one who gave Mark their temporary name, she’s the one who proposed the talent show, that kinda thing. I particularly want to highlight this scene, though:
Vanessa [CH1, 141]: Why do you keep disagreeing with her?! Doesn’t Mark being the killer make way more sense here? Who knows what they’re thinking at any given time? Toni is… she’s her! Someone we can trust… Aidan: It doesn’t help anyone to blindly defend someone because you like them. This is where our logic’s taking us. If you want to defend her with actual logic, be my guest, but if you’re just yelling, all you’re gonna do is turn people against her. Vanessa: Why would that turn people against her…? Aidan: Because you’re not backing it up. If belief is the only thing you’ve got, then it makes it seem like belief is the only thing there is. Vanessa: Well, you’re wrong! Antonia: Vanessa, if you’ll allow me to handle this– Vanessa: No one should be accusing you like this! I’ll… convince them they’re wrong! Yeah, that’s it! Antonia: Vanessa– Vanessa: Don’t worry, I’ve got you!
Let’s quickly appreciate Aidan’s cold ass “if belief is the only thing you’ve got, then it makes it seem like belief is the only thing there is” line.
Wow… :O /gen
Alright it’s been appreciated. Now we can focus on Vanessa again. Beyond her vehement trust in Antonia, the main thing I wanted to point out is how Ness continued to defend Antonia even after Toni repeatedly told her to back down. After all, Ness’ Freestyle Feud starts directly after this. I really like this piece of characterization because I’m a sucker for this type of “white knight/savior complex” character. I just like it that’s all :>
Overall, Vanessa beats the CH1 victim allegations with flying colors, and I can’t wait to see where her character goes from here!
-Mastermind ranking: 13/16. Apart from how genuinely upset at Antonia’s death she is, Vanessa’s distaste for the way Monoquin presents everything would suggest that she is not the one responsible for creating the guy.
Vanessa [Prologue, 18]: …the way [Monoquin] reveals information is so boring. I could do a way better job. Like, “oh, by the way, you’re Ultimates, like Hope’s Peak.” Where’s the drama? Where’s the delivery?
I didn’t mention it in the analysis, but I do enjoy how passionate Ness is over this. I can’t possibly think she’s the mm if she hates Monoquin’s announcing this much!
Jeff Breeze
-Original talent guess: (Resort/Hotel) Manager/Tour Guide/Vacationer -Actual talent: Absentee -Talent prediction notes: Vacationer’s kinda close, right? What's with the umbrella, anyways? Unguessable xD -Likes: Blue hawaiians. Dislikes: Conflict.
My guy has exactly one goal at any time, and that is to get the hell outta dodge. We hear in their FTE that they occasionally get a certain feeling that things are gonna turn out bad, and they always leave the moment they get said feeling. Other than that, and the fact he was forced to play football (er, soccer) briefly when he was younger, and that they got dragged to an amusement park at some point, we don’t know too much about Jeff. Which means there’s room for speculation!
My current guess of what theme Jeff’s character will play into is the whole idea that “you miss all the shots you don’t take” or something. You know, the thing the fangan seems to be named after, and Ellis mentions early into the Prologue. Because Jeff always ditches before the going gets tough, they usually don’t “take any shots”, which is something which could be explored in the future. Even if it isn’t, Jeff’s avoidant behavior could be contrasted (and already is paralleling) with things like Vanessa’s more proactive attitude to the killing game, or Robert and Taylor’s desire to fit in instead of distancing themselves from others, you get the idea.
Finally, and the reason Jeff’s so high up in the “relevance list”, his involvement in the trial. Jeff just so happens to be outside when the murder’s going down, which makes sense with their “bad vibes radar” thing. When shit’s about to go down, their spider sense tingles and they get restless, so they go out to burn off their energy, and find themselves being important in the trial. I wonder if him getting dragged into situations they really don’t want to be in is going to be a recurring thing. We’ll see!
-Mastermind ranking: 14/16. I said Jeff has exactly one goal, and I meant it. He wants to leave. This conflicts with the mm’s desire to… not. Do that. So. Unless they’re lying about literally everything, this one doesn’t look very likely.
Ellis Ortiz
-Original talent guess: Lucky Student -Actual talent: Lucky Student -Talent guess notes: ;) -Likes: Designer brands. Dislikes: Closing hours.
And we finally reach our protagonist! And what a protagonist he is. Not only are their flirtatious antics pretty funny, her attitude towards the killing game is quite the unique one.
As is common with Lucky Students, a lot of it comes from her luck. From what we understand, that luck is generally strictly positive and Ellis mainly applies it to money-making, though he seems to have a sort of conflicted opinion on it. On the one hand, Ellis trusts her luck enough to somewhat firmly believe in their title, as expressed in all the inner monologues where Ellis assures themselves they will survive the killing game no matter what. On the other, Ellis doesn’t like to attribute all her achievements to luck alone, disliking that her title doesn’t acknowledge the actual skill she believes to have in things such as stock trading and gambling. Of course, right now the audience has no idea how much of that perceived skill actually exists and how much of it is just Ellis trying to convince himself he deserves his winnings for reasons other than pure chance. Something to see in the future.
This conflict about her luck carries into Ellis’ general killing game strategy. Or at least, the strategy she’s trying to implement. He first swears to himself that he won’t get attached to the other characters and will treat them only as eye candy, which immediately fails as we see him crying after the class trial. Not to mention, they’re seemingly getting attached to Mark, at least, given their little triple introduction thing. And they're even considering switching strategy to defeating the mastermind after the first trial, as they've noticed that, if it comes down to them or the mm, they may be cooked.
In general, Ellis is pretty bad when it comes to fulfilling promises she makes to herself. There are, for example, many times in the chapter where Ellis promises not to think about things such as the mastermind, followed just a scene or two later by an internal monologue about the mastermind paranoid enough to rival Kennedy’s craziest theories. The persona of confidence and nonchalance that Ellis projects is so far removed from her inner doubts and insecurities, that she keeps switching between paranoid overthinking and complete laidback-ness with enough speed to cause whiplash.
This all comes from Ellis’ complete inability to be honest to himself about his feelings, naturally. Becoming more honest with said feelings is likely going to be a large part of Ellis’ character arc, which could parallel/contrast nicely with people like Taylor (who feels they have to act as someone else to express themselves), or Paris (who doesn’t speak too much about herself and prefers gossiping about others). Plus, the general idea of dishonesty, with oneself or others, can be connected to Antonia’s and Cass’ shared theme of secrets (again, more on that in a moment). However, other parts of his character could play off nicely with a lot of the cast. Ellis’ flirtatious attitude could connect to Davis’ Deal, their bouts of paranoia could play off the Mad Duo, their devil-may-care style of living contrasts Grace’s more reserved lifestyle, their optimism and trying to make the best of the situation is similar to Vanessa’s CH1 attitude and contrary to Jeff’s perspective, you get the idea. Fun character!
I haven’t mentioned it too much, but we also have a lot of info on Ellis’ backstory. He has two younger step-siblings who are “alright”, got started with his exploits by inheritance from his grandpa, he refers to something called the “Ellis Ortiz brand” at some points so he might be relatively well known (assuming he’s not exaggerating his relevance)*, and probably more I’m forgetting (or just skipping due to them being minor details) just because we have a lot more time to learn about Ellis’ backstory than other characters. She is the PoV character after all! In any case, it’s fun stuff.
*Yeah so I fell for the old trick of he unreliable narrator lol. She has (or would have) 5.1k Twitter followers, which is less than fucking Vivi. No one knows who Ellis is, the brand thing's exaggeration xD
-Mastermind ranking: 10/16. Although an mm protag isn’t out of the question (check tags of that post), Ellis doesn’t particularly strike me as one. See, she would need to be an amnesiac mm, the kind that doesn’t even know they’re the mm before the end of the story. And while there’s never a good way to completely rule that out, I haven’t seen any reason to believe that’s the case either.
Let’s put it like this; if you consider Ellis a potential mm candidate, you also have to consider everyone below her a candidate as well, as anyone could potentially be the type of mm she’d have to be. The only reason she’s higher than them, then, is that this particular type of mm works best with protags. The main reason to create an mm like this would be to prevent internal dialogue from spoiling the mm, which is obviously only a problem for Ellis.
Necessary amnesia aside, Ellis’ stated goals of “get rich, get bitches, have fun” (simplified) don’t really align with the things creating a killing game would accomplish. And while it’s possible Ellis changed in the period of lost memories, we have no evidence of that, so. Yeah, not very likely :v

-Original talent guess: Writer. -Actual talent: Agent. -Talent prediction notes: I mean. I had a pen to work with. I wasn’t getting that xD -Likes: Getting info. Dislikes: Stubborn people.
Victim coming through! And what a victim Cass is. You know, it’s always hard to make the audience care about the CH1 victim, given they’re definitionally the character who’s alive for the shortest amount of time, but having a major twist about them happen during the trial is a hell of a way to do that! The reveal of Cass’ true talent is the kind of thing that makes you do the character analysis backwards, starting at the end with the reveal and piecing it together (heh) from there.
Grace: Now that you mention it, I believe they quickly pivoted to discussing sales with me as well.
Well, we saw two Cass introductions, so why not confirm?
[Cass] [Prologue, 37]: Lucky Student, huh? That’s an all-around useful talent. Still though, it’s weird… Why is no one here talented at making things, or having something to sell…? Ellis: Hey, who says I’m not talented at “making” something? [Cass]: I should clarify, I’m referring to making something physical. Something that one might, say, need someone to critique and/or help them market to higher ups. They extend their hand to me. [Cass]: I’m Cassidy Torres, or Cass for short, she/they. And, here, I guess I’m the Ultimate Agent.
Cass [Prologue Bonus Scenes, 9]: It’s great to meet you, Grace. My name is Cassidy Torres– Cass for short– and I use she/they. I’m the Ultimate Agent. After we shake hands, Cass looks at me approvingly. Cass: It’s about time I met an Ultimate who actually creates something. My talent is pretty useless without anything to market, so I was hoping I’d be able to help at least one of you with my services. As it turns out, the last person I met was the one who best fit the description.
Yep, pretty much exactly what the others said. Cass was quick to mention sales and creating products so as to now get found out, even though funnily enough Ellis almost got it.
Ellis [Prologue, 38]: Agent, huh? So, I shouldn’t be surprised when you pull out some spy-like leather suit? Cass: Oh, it’s nothing like that. Though I’ve definitely worn my fair share of suits…
Cass is quick with it :O
Although I think Cass’ Agent skills shine most when you can see the full extent of their internal monologue.
Kennedy [CH1 Bonus Scenes, 10]: Found you! Kennedy has, apparently, tracked me down to the Show Room, which I had assumed no one would really want to spend time in. This doesn’t contradict that data point, though; if Kennedy was looking for me specifically, as evidenced by their words, then it’s my presence rather than any qualities of the Show Room itself that led them here. Probably best to play dumb, though.
Bro. Even if Kennedy hadn’t said “found you”, you could’ve just asked them what they were doing in the Show Room without that analysis. Which you do.
Cass [CH1 Bonus Scenes, 10]: Were you looking for me?
You’re putting my overthinking to shame, you gotta relax! (Kidding, I really enjoy the overkill analysis there xD).
Cass’ skill is actually very fun to really think about. They had to come up with the cover story of being a salesperson on the spot when they got their talent, which is kinda crazy. And she still managed to come up with stuff like specific phrases and words that would always get a reaction of her cover character! What!
Kennedy [CH1 Bonus Scenes, 12]: Isn’t this a good opportunity for you? “Opportunity” acts like a trigger phrase. Right. I need to be charading as the Ultimate non-secret Agent. I make a show of sighing. Cass: I suppose passing up on a good opportunity is typically a bad thing. But, an opportunity for what?
I have no way of knowing how accurate of a depiction of secret agents this is, but I can say it's a pretty cool description to read about.
This does mean that a lot of Cass’ dialogue ends up being nothing but part of an act, a problem for character analysis. But there’s still plenty to work with, especially because her talent deeply relates to the main theme connecting her and Antonia: secrets, the things people will do to uncover them, and the extent people are willing to go to keep them.
Antonia [CH1, 52]: From what I’ve determined, you may be the one hiding the biggest secret here, Cassidy. Cass: I’m sorry? Antonia: I know a liar when I see one~ A liar? But, what would Cass have to lie about…? Unless…? Cass: What are you accusing me of, exactly? Antonia: I’m not sure what. You could be the mastermind, or the possessor of the poison, or any number of things. All I can tell is that you’re guarded. There are things you don’t want us to learn. Isn’t that right?
Cass [To Antonia, CH1, 52]: …Fine. If you won’t tell your secrets, I won’t tell mine.
Antonia [CH1, 148]: We weren’t dealing with only the mastermind, darling. We were dealing with “secrets.”
I’ll get to Antonia’s secrets in her section, but Cass obviously had a pretty big one of their own, not to mention that her entire talent is based around uncovering hidden truths. The secrets these two keep are what ultimately creates the conflict which will end with Cass’ death and Antonia’s execution. After all, Antonia’s general suspicion regarding the fact they were keeping a secret at all is really the reason why Cass ended up suspecting Antonia so much. Because while they originally held Antonia in the same regard as Ellis or Mark in terms of mm possibility, they still end up antagonizing Antonia specifically, possibly because they feel threatened by Antonia’s immaculate liar detector. Now, make no mistake, Cass made up an in-persona reason to be a secret-keeper, so it’s not like Antonia’s lie detector is immediately damning to them, but it’s still a pretty large threat.
Cass [CH1, 52]: …I can’t reveal everything so easily. My clients have sensitive information, and my trust with them is more important than getting to know any of you. If I feel distant, that’s all it is. Ellis: Wouldn’t you want your clients to have a friendly relationship with you, though…? Cass: Of course. But, at least as of now, none of you are my clients, so those who I represent are of greater concern to me.
Of course, though, there’s also the possibility that Cass just clocked Antonia as a liar the same way Antonia clocked them, even if it’s never explicitly stated, and that’s the entire reason for their suspicion.
Cass [CH1, 59]: I will figure out your secrets. Antonia: Of course you will, darling.
Actually, the idea that Cass felt threatened in some way by Antonia’s ability to spot liars could play into something interesting with these two’s profiles. Cass dislikes “stubborn people”, while Antonia dislikes “bad losers.” You could make the argument that Antonia is stubborn in the sense that she’s good at standing her ground against Cass’ prodding for secrets, and that Cass may be a bad loser in the sense that she may feel she “lost” to Antonia when the Dealer noticed she was hiding something, and clearly isn’t happy about it.
[Cass’ inner monologue] [CH1 Bonus Scenes, 10]: It’s hard to say I’m anything but annoyed as I leave the Buffet. Antonia is still playing at the same games as always…
Not sure if this interpretation works perfectly, but close enough, and it's pretty cool. Eternal beef, these two.
In any case, regardless of what exactly led Cass to focus so much on Antonia, the end result is the same. Antonia figures out she’s being spied on, and chooses to deal with that issue before it could grow into anything bigger. Hence, Cass’ death.
Although, here’s an interesting point related to the murder. Isn’t Cass a hypocrite?
Cass [CH1, 35]: Everyone, calm down! The group settles down and turns to Cass. Cass: [Someone asking for poison from the CSD] is obviously a threat, and we should take caution knowing that someone here may be plotting a murder already. However, blatantly throwing around distrust and creating an air of paranoia will only make tensions higher. Mark: Then… what should we do? Cass: The same things you’ve been doing. All you need to do is keep an eye out for any suspicious activity and engage in safe behavior. Stay in groups or well-lit areas. Don’t go out at night. Those sorts of things should keep you safe enough while we figure out the mysteries of this place.
“Don’t go out at night”, she says, a few days before going out at night and dying. “Don’t create an air of paranoia”, she says, shortly before beefing with Antonia so obviously that everyone noticed something was going on even before Paris said anything. Not great at following their own advice, evidently.
Although that second point is slightly unfair, actually. Cass doesn’t actually accuse Antonia and gang of being the mm at first, it’s Antonia herself who brings the implicit accusation to light. In the same vein, she refuses to say who she suspects in her discussion with Kennedy and Vivi and Ellis about the mm before that.
Kennedy [CH1, 32]: Cass… If you can say who you don’t think it is, that means there are some people you do suspect. Cass: I have a couple leading theories. Kennedy: Tell me. Cass: I’m not going to go around voicing all of my thoughts. Besides, it’s… not fitting for an agent to talk negatively about people. What if a future client heard of it and was worried about what I’d do with their secrets?
Antonia [CH1, 51]: I assure you, the real dynamics between different establishments are far more complex… Cass: Do you have insight into the dynamics, then? Do you know anyone who might hold a grudge? Antonia: With all due respect, my dear Cassidy, are you trying to determine if one of us is the mastermind?
The point about the night stands, though. And it’s worth noting that Cass likely didn’t have ulterior motives in saying that or anything, as she does seem to be genuinely concerned for the others’ safety.
Davis [CH1, 58]: I take it you all were drinking last night…? Jeff: Yeah? What’s the big deal? Cass: That doesn’t sound like you were being particularly safe, given our environment.
And it makes sense. When they talk about their goals in their Bonus Scene with Grace, they specifically say that their goal can be “approximated” to figuring out the secrets of the Resort and getting out with everyone.
Grace [Prologue Bonus Scenes, 10]: What are your long-term goals, if I might ask? They smile. Cass: I’m not gonna go around talking about that kind of thing immediately, especially not with cameras everywhere. I’ve got big plans once I’m back out in the real world. But, foundations are laid here. She looks around the room, though nothing in particular seems to catch her interest. Cass: If you’re looking for what’s motivating me, for now, you can approximate it to figuring out what’s going on at this Resort and getting everyone out of this situation safely.
More on those goals in a moment, but for now, what matters is that Cass is genuinely invested in the safety of the others and wants to escape with everyone, so her warnings about not going out at night are genuine. That means the only reason they would go against their advice is if they considered themselves capable of avoiding issues, probably because of their talent.
Huh. Overly relying on her talent to keep her safe while she carries out a plan no one else knows anything about? That’d be like a Lucky Student relying on their luck to survive through the killing game, with a plan of outlasting everyone else that they don’t discuss with anyone. Wink.
Anyways, I left this question pending, so let’s get back to it. What the hell are Cass’ long term goals? All we really know is that she’s motivated to figure out the Resort’s secrets and get everyone out of there, but supposedly these are just the “foundations” of her goals. They also say that talking to Grace is related to the goal, but as they say, that’s mostly just because gathering info on those around them is helpful in their eyes.
Cass [Prologue Bonus Scenes, 10]: I’d call [talking to you about marketing] related to my goals, personally. Grace: Your goal of gaining clients? Like I said, that isn’t– Cass: No, in general. Isn’t it helpful to know people better, if you’re trying to work with them? I pause. Grace: I suppose that’s a fair perspective. Cass: Believe me, I understand. I don’t waste time talking to just anyone if I don’t believe it’ll help me achieve my long-term goals. But if I decide it’s worth it, I’m not easily swayed. Right now, I’ve decided I want to talk to you, and that’s the best use of my time.
Now, I can’t for the life of me reach anything resembling a solid answer, for obvious reasons. It’s entirely possible, for one, that these goals aren’t important and will never actually be brought up in the main story, seeing as they’re only really mentioned in a Bonus Scene. In that case, we may never have enough info to come to any definitive conclusion about it.
However, it’s possible that Cass’ name will come up again, because her goals could very well have to do with the very foundations of the killing game and the situation in the outside world. For example, it’s possible that they were investigating the resort itself or some kind of aspect of the Tragedy, and they got close enough that the mm decided to wipe their memories of the bigger secrets and just stick them in a killing game. Depending on how much she remembers, she could very well have had some inkling about what’s really going on, enough to know that there were bigger plans outside that she was a part of, possibly focused on taking down groups doing Tragedy stuff.
Or I’m going completely fucking insane, which I think is the more likely option in this case. Regardless, I don’t really have any more concrete ideas on what the hell she was up to at the moment, so I’ll leave it at that. Dear god what a character.
-Mastermind ranking: 16/16. I mean. They’re dead. And deny they’re the mm in inner monologue. It doesn’t really get less mastermind-y than that.
Kennedy [CH1 Bonus Scenes, 12]: Then, based on my deductions, you would be the most likely mastermind candidate. Cass: Wh–?! What kind of a strategy is that?! Besides, it’s obviously wrong…!
Antonia Cisneros
-Original talent guess: Gambler/Poker Player -Actual talent: Dealer -Talent prediction notes: Wrong side of the table :v -Likes: Nightlife. Dislikes: Bad losers.
Guess who got unreasonably attached to the CH1 killer, again? This guy!
Antonia’s fun, both because of how entertaining I find (er, found) her personality, and how many mindgames my girl actually plays. The insane standoff from her Bonus Scene with Paris in the Prologue, her constant beefing with Cass, the entire trial… that kinda thing. In fact, there’s so many mindgames and potential lies going around, we might have to take this chronologically!
The first big thing we learn about Antonia in CH1 is the existence of her little sister (also mentioned in the Paris Bonus Scene), and how this helps her form a quick bond with Vanessa.
Antonia [CH1, 42]: It’s very charming, how excited Vanessa gets. It reminds me of my younger sister. She was always a ball of energy. Mark: You mentioned her at the talent show, too… Vanessa: Toni’s really sweet and caring when it comes to her sister, from what I’ve heard. And she sorta acts like a big sister to me, too!
However, this starts an interesting trend in how Antonia actually talks about Vanessa and her connection to Antonia’s sister. Take a look at the two other instances where this comes up:
Antonia [CH1, 138]: For instance, Vanessa reminds me of my younger sister. I would be unable to willingly sign her death warrant, even indirectly through the Class Trial.
Noah [CH1, 148]: All that stuff about [Vanessa] being like your sister… Were you lying about that, too? Antonia: Hm? Oh, no. She does, in fact, remind me of my sister. But that isn’t enough to stop me from acting in my own best interests.
Antonia never directly claims to care for Vanessa as she would a sister, all she ever says is that Vanessa reminds her of her actual sister. Antonia just says they share similarities, and doesn’t ever concretely express how that makes her feel. The only time she actually compliments Vanessa directly, she also compliments Ellis at the same time, someone who she doesn’t have the same kind of bond with.
Mark [CH1, 44]: Are we… actually doing this…? Antonia: Well, if it makes these two wonderful people happy, then I don’t see what the harm could be.
Now, I could be wrong about this, but to me it feels like while Antonia enjoyed Vanessa’s presence because of the sister thing, she didn’t do so to the extent that she led the others to believe. She simply allowed Vanessa’s enthusiasm to speak for the both of them, giving the impression of a much closer bond than what she genuinely felt, and she tried to take advantage of that flawed perception during the Third Party Analysis. Whether this lie of omission was originally just to make Ness feel better, or if Antonia was always planning to use this as a “card up her sleeve” (heh) to argue her innocence in a class trial, I genuinely can’t tell because everyone in this fangan (and especially Antonia herself) is a massive tryhard when it comes to killing game tactics.
Then again, I could always be overthinking it.
Antonia [CH1, 43]: No worries, Mark. It’s only natural. Mark: Why do you say it like that…? Antonia: Oh, I’ve just never been fond of using nicknames. But, in your case, I suppose it can’t be helped.
Antonia doesn’t like using nicknames, which is… interesting. Wonder if we’ll ever find out why that’s a thing, if there even is a reason beyond personal preference.
Antonia [CH1, 44]: A party is… something we could consider, though I do wonder where we would hold it. Vanessa: I mean, for open space and lighting, the Casino, right? Antonia: …I would rather not.
This never got explicitly explained, right? Why Antonia didn’t want a party at the casino? It’s not like she was planning to murder Cass specifically already, since Cass hadn’t started accusing her yet. And Cass only died in the casino because Antonia could lure her there since Cass was following her around. This might be a question to ask her once we get access to ouija boards after the fangan’s over. Or maybe not, who knows.
Antonia [CH1, 46]: Aren’t we a little too fixated on what isn’t here? If we all share each other’s company, we should be enjoying ourselves. There’s no point in doing anything otherwise.
This is wild coming from the woman who ordered poison from the CSD the morning of the day this got said. Incidentally, you’ll notice this is pretty close to Vanessa’s perspective on the killing game, although Antonia’s actually referring to Jeff’s absence from that meal and not the outside world. Neat!
Ellis [CH1, 51]: Maybe it’s, like, a rival casino owner trying to incite a scandal. That sounds like something that could happen in a cartoon. Antonia: I assure you, the real dynamics between different establishments are far more complex… Cass: Do you have insight into the dynamics, then? Do you know anyone who might hold a grudge? Antonia: With all due respect, my dear Cassidy, are you trying to determine if one of us is the mastermind?
Finally, we get to the Cass beef! And even from the start, we can start gathering just how important the theme of secrets is for these two, as I already mentioned in the Cass section. By very obviously deflecting the question about casino dynamics before Cass could press further, Antonia tries to keep her secrets by stopping the line of questioning about her life outside the killing game dead on its tracks.
Cass: …I can’t reveal everything so easily. My clients have sensitive information, and my trust with them is more important than getting to know any of you. If I feel distant, that’s all it is.
But this is all stuff we covered with Cass. The question we left pending was what exactly Antonia’s secrets are, since we can be relatively sure she isn’t the mm now that she's dead.
Antonia [CH1, 148]: We weren’t dealing with only the mastermind, darling. We were dealing with “secrets.” And, while I may not want to say them here, I have things in my past I’d rather not share, especially if I were to attempt a murder. Mark: Like how you knew how to cut and sew the body…? Antonia: Something like that.
For this query, we can focus on the fact that, by saying she’d like to keep her secrets “especially if she were to attempt a murder,” Antonia implies the reveal of her secrets would inconvenience her during a class trial. Not to mention her response to Mark’s question, about the possible connection between her secrets and her dismemberment skills. And if that’s the case, then...
Mark [CH1 Bonus Scenes, 18]: I’ve given my theories. We’re about to explore the possibilities in the Class Trial. I thought your insight could be helpful. Antonia: But of course. Antonia twirls her hair around her finger with an absentminded look in her eyes. Antonia: Well, I do believe our killer wouldn’t be a first-time murderer.
Uh.
Antonia [CH1 Bonus Scenes, 18]: Does it really surprise you? The speed at which they killed, the brutality of the method, the skills dismembering the body must take… None of those are things you can simply dream up overnight. Mark: Probably true.
Ehem.
Mark [CH1 Bonus Scenes, 19]: But, based on what you were saying… I doubt this is only their second kill, either. This is someone who knows what they’re doing. Antonia: Is there much of a difference between a second murder and a hundredth? You’re already a murderer either way.
Hey guys Antonia might just be a serial killer.
I mean, isn’t that what this looks like? She’s saying she believes the blackened had killed before the killing game, and Mark says that they probably killed multiple times, and Antonia is the blackened. Certainly sounds like she’s letting the truth slip as a hypothetical. Now, she does give an alternate explanation of why she says the things she does in the Bonus Scene:
Antonia [CH1 Bonus Scenes, 20]: We’re simply speculating as to the killer’s mindset, aren’t we? To better understand how someone willing to take a life– no, multiple lives– might think of the world. Disregard my opinion if you’d like, but I’ve listened to many people talk, criminal and otherwise.
However, that doesn’t account for Mark saying that the killer’s skill could indicate they were, in fact, a serial killer. And besides, the best liars know when to tell the truth, because doing so removes the possibility of you losing credibility if you’re caught through tells or other means.
This is actually a pretty convenient narrative for Antonia to spin. See, if the brutality of the murder is because the blackened was already a serial killer, then it can’t be used to argue against anyone in particular, as any of the participants could realistically be the hidden serial killer. However, if you discount that possibility, then one could argue the brutality is born from a grudge the killer had against Cass. And while Antonia wasn’t the only person Cass suspected of being the mm, she sure was Cass’ number 1 rival. Thus, such an argument could land Antonia in a dangerous position. And without precedent of how this cast would act in the trial, Antonia would have no reason to believe she’d be able to defend against it in a way that would convince the others, at least not without throwing in the “serial killer” angle anyways.
I… hope that made sense.
The point is, this is a convenient thing for Antonia to say regardless of whether or not it’s true. And of course, if this really is her secret, this would be something that she really wouldn’t want to be revealed if she wanted to ever win a class trial, and it is in fact connected with her dismemberment skills, the two aspects of the secret we discussed before.
Seeing as Antonia could very well be telling the truth in the Bonus Scene, the previously mentioned line about her secret being inconvenient for trials and related to the dismemberment thing, and the arguments brought up in said Bonus Scene about the blackened’s skill and chosen method implying a serial killer, I’d say there’s a compelling argument to say that Antonia is, in fact, a serial killer. Which we could probably also infer from the fact that, since the killer asked for the boxes the same day they asked for the poison, Antonia really was ready to dismember someone from Day 3.
Am I 100% confident in saying that? No, obviously. But it is what I find most likely at this point.
Another question to ask would be what reason Antonia would have to murder someone before the killing game. And, since we already established that I don’t think her thoughts in the CH1 Bonus Scene are as hypothetical as she leads Mark to believe, we can try to infer something based on that, too.
Antonia [CH1, 19]: Well, with all of our other pursuits, do you really believe someone would kill just for the thrill of it? If we’ve all achieved great things, it stands to reason that whoever committed such a crime in the past would be doing so for a dedicated goal. Thus, killing would become a sacrifice to further that goal.
Assuming she’s not making this up on the spot, this could imply that her serial killing has to do with her talent… whatever that looks like. It’s worth noting that this “hypothetical” mindset actually does match at least one of Antonia’s own lines post trial, considering murdering people as a means to an end and a “small price to pay”:
Robert [CH1, 149]: You’re still talking about killing someone. You still made that decision… Antonia: If that’s all I have to do to end my imprisonment and guarantee my safety, it’s a rather small price to pay, isn’t it? Vanessa: B-but… what are we supposed to do now…? Antonia: It’s of no concern to me. Continue playing along with your fake peace, or turn on each other. All I know is that, eventually, someone won’t be able to take it anymore, and that person will remember that all they have to do to end it all is kill. It’s not such a large price, when you put it that way.
Obviously I don’t have any way to speculate further without just throwing random shit at the wall (eliminating Dealer competition maybe?), so I’ll leave my official theory at just that. Antonia killed to become the Ultimate Dealer, and has evidently done it quite a bit!
Alright, so what do we do with this? Well, it’s hard to tell when I can’t even be sure this will ever be brought up in the main section of the fangan anyways. But I imagine the ideas of ambition (relating her murders to her talent) and the lengths people will go to keep secrets might come back up later, and it’ll be fun contrasting other people’s actions to Antonia’s with that in mind. Considering some of the other themes we’ve discussed, you could even tie Antonia’s desensitization to murder into the ideas of normality discussed before, where the concept of “normal” is very subjective. After all, Antonia seems to consider what she did to Cass relatively normal for her, right?
And of course, this desensitization to murder somewhat parallels Ellis’ plan of “let everyone die and dip”, since it’s effectively the same plan Antonia had, just without directly murdering anyone. A parallel which is furthered by Antonia’s belief in the “house”:
Antonia [CH1, 148]: Because I didn’t want to play with fire. The establishment wants one winner, and the house always wins in the end. One of these days, one person will win. If fifteen will die, I liked my odds of being the last one standing better when I put myself directly in the position to win, rather than waiting around for others to make mistakes.
The same way that Ellis fully believes in his ability to win the killing game by coasting off his luck, Antonia is entirely confident that the house will get its way in the end. It’s only natural for the Dealer to align herself with the house by playing the game in earnest, while the gambler tries to luck out and get one over on the house by surviving without murdering. But in the end, both of them see it entirely as a game to be won, and not so much a hardship to be overcome. How such a wonderful parallel happened when the characters are written by two different people, I will never know, but it’s genuinely super impressive.
Anyways, let’s cover a few lines here and there that are cool but I couldn’t fit into the main analysis.
Antonia [CH1, 68]: …Apologies for disturbing all your thoughts, but… has anyone seen Cassidy this morning?
I think it’s cool that Antonia is actually the one that first brings up Cass’ absence. She needs to make sure everyone’s looking at the boxes when they open for the BDA disguising trick, after all!
In the interest of getting this post out sometime in 2025, I’m going to skip over a couple of cool moments during the trial itself, but just know that I think Antonia was pretty decent throughout, and you already know how cool I found her calm demeanor directly preceding the Third Party Analysis and her counterarguments after. Though for more specific lines:
Antonia [CH1, 106]: There actually isn’t any way to delete a message from an e-Handbook once sent, on either end. I expect this, in combination with the rule against stealing e-Handbooks, is intended to add extra challenge for the killer.
Do we think Antonia tried deleting the messages between Cass and Jeff when she had Cass’ E-Handbook? I wonder what exactly her plan would have been with that. Maybe framing Jeff by pointing out the messages’ deletion as weird? Shame it didn’t work.
Antonia [CH1, 146]: I suppose you all think this is the answer? That I’ve created an elaborate plan to make myself an undercover killer, and that Cassidy is some eternal force of good?
I really wonder what the “eternal force of good” comment is about, but I have genuinely zero idea what it could refer to :p To me it implies Antonia didn’t think of Cass that way, but I could be overthinking it.
Antonia [CH1, 148]: I suppose… I am slightly sorry, for roping you into all of this.
For all the serial killer talk, I do want it on record that Antonia is not entirely heartless. She did feel sorry, to some extent, for her actions, and it’s pretty clear she cared about her sister outside of the killing game. That’s cool :)
Though it’s worth noting she doesn’t apologize to Cass so much as she apologizes to the others for “roping them in”. I guess it’s an extension of the philosophy that Cass can’t care about anything now that she’s a corpse, so apologies to them are unnecessary.
-Mastermind ranking: 15/16. I’ll let her do the honors of explaining why she’s this low:
Kennedy [CH1, 147]: Was Cass right? Are you the mastermind?! Antonia pauses for a moment, then bursts into a fit of laughter. Antonia: Of course not! If I were, why would I be playing by the rules of this silly game?
-
Final MM Rankings: Cass - Antonia - Jeff - Vanessa - Kennedy - Vivi - Ellis - Mark - Aidan - Harper - Noah - Robert - Taylor - Davis - Grace - Paris
Holy hell how did I avoid problems with color coding here of all places?
-
Woo! Alright, that took longer than I expected, but 16k words later, we got our analysis! My excitement for this fangan grows with every part release, and really digging into the characters for this post has made me appreciate them all the more! Anyways, thanks for reading! If you made it this far, you’ve earned a royal flush! Ask Antonia for whatever money you just made- oh, wait. Uh. You can't... really do that. Anyways, see ya’!
Taking a "Shot" at the DR:OS Prediction Game!
In case you're not aware, a post on the av-multifangan account explained an interesting prediction game: after reading the prologue, you give your predictions on killers, victims, death chapter, survivors and mastermind. I am, to be clear, really bad at this, but I decided to give it a "shot" (heh) anyways! Here are my predictions, with explanations under the cut!
(I put chapter number too because this format is not colorblind friendly otherwise lol)

[Also, in case you're curious, I didn't check accirax's guesses, nor the guesses of this Jonas fellow mentioned in the original post, before making this post. I only checked their mm guesses 'cuz I was curious :v I'll check them out after to see how different they are :)]

We're starting with survivors because sometimes it's easier to start at the end and workshop a way to get there.
First is the only freebie on the list: Ellis. As stated in the linked post, because of DROS' format, the protagonist must be a survivor. Which means I'll only get 15/16 wrong, nice.
After that... I have no idea :v
Mark is here because of... pattern recognition, really. In canon DR, out of three Ultimate ???s, two were survivors (Kirigiri and Hinata) and one died in CH1 (Amami. No I don't know why I'm listing them by last name). However, Amami knew he was the Ultimate Survivor (more or less? Been a while since I've seen anything DRV3 related) so he actually doesn't count. I think you can see my reasoning here lmao.
However, there's a reason Ultimate ???s have a tendency to survive. Simply put, if the mastermind (MM) chooses to erase this person's memories particularly, they're presumably somewhat important. Maybe connected to the nature of the killing game, even. And so, they're usually around for the CH6 reveal of what their missing memories might mean for the larger plot.
It's not perfect, obviously. There's many ways to kill Mark before CH6. Talent reveal can happen posthumously, which was the case with Amami for example. They can also happen earlier in the killing game, allowing Mark to react to it without surviving to CH6. And more! However, I have very little to go off of, and Mark's "talent" gives me something to argue for their survival, at least. That's more than basically everyone else in the cast bar Ellis, so they're going here :v
So, now that we're officially out of okay-ish guesses, let's dive into the insanity! Starting with my hail mary, absolutely most-probably-wrong MM guess, Grace!
Now, this cast has a few "suspicious" characters. Robert has the whole "plain" thing going on that Tsumugi had, Aidan's half and half color scheme could be a nod to mm leanings, Ultimate ???s like Mark are always decent guesses, and the setting being a casino makes Antonia a prime target for MM accusations. Of course, these might be too obvious for an MM, but that's not extremely disqualifying. There's also the argument that the attempt on the mm's part to replicate Hope's Peak throws suspicion on the Impressionist, Taylor; and that Paris' talent being related to secrets and stuff could be considered mm-ish. Plus, Paris is the 13th student by Countdown Order (which I can't help but notice is the order of this list when read left to right and up to down), and 13 is an unlucky number, compared to Ellis' lucky number seven. Thee two might be a bit better. Finally, since she's even less obvious, I also vibe with accirax's guess of Cass, but I can't think of many arguments beyond Vibes for them (which is valid, tbf).
But if we're going to take Countdown Numbers into account, 4 is also an unlucky number (related to death even!), which gets us to Grace. There are a few reasons I believe they could be the MM.
First and foremost; given some of my previous posts, I just find it really funny for me to call the Clockmaker of all people the MM. If you've ever touched a clock, it's on sight with me, apparently xD
Now that we've established that, I do actually think there's a good argument for Grace!MM... by the standards of any MM theory pre-CH1, at least. Beyond the previously mentioned Countdown Number thing, they're the person in the prologue found next to the Movie Theater room, which was locked and didn't really have anything interesting to look at. Could it be they didn't feel the need to explore, because they already knew everything about the building? They also mentioned they liked the directness of the message on the cork board outside the Movie Theater room, when that's the exact thing Vanessa complained about Monoquin earlier. These are, to be extremely clear, really silly points. But they're there! And compared to people like Jeff, who have somewhat disqualifying introductions on the mm front, it's not a horrible start.
Another point is that, so far, Grace is the only person to have definitively shot down Ellis' flirting, by talking about their boyfriend. If Ellis is Lucky, then maybe it makes sense for the universe to stop him from flirting with the mm... maybe. This point is even sillier than the others, especially considering Grace isn't even the only character Ellis has no opportunity to swoon, as for example Vivi is aro/ace.
The next point is funny. See, I joke about the talent, but Grace being a Clockmaker could be twisted into suspiciousness if you're mentally unwell like me.
Usually one of the tools I consider best for MM predictions is thematic analysis (in other words, what kind of mm would best fit the themes of a work), but I can't exactly do that in the Prologue when there's very little set up in terms of themes and such.
Unless. Unless we go insane.
The fangan... is called One Shot. So a theme of the fangan (bear with me here) could be irreversibility. That you only get "one shot" to do certain things or something. Which fits decently well with the idea of time, this unstoppable march forward that can never be turned back. Right? You get the idea? And, and, because the DROS killing game is the sixth in-universe killing game ran by the mastermind(s), another theme could be repetition. As in, the killing games happen "like clockwork."
...
Me rn
Yeah this is maybe the stupidest set of "evidence points" I've ever used for any theory ever. Like, that's an insane soul read on what the themes of DROS could actually be, I'm fully expecting to be completely wrong on that lol. I actually find Grace!MM pretty unlikely, but I currently feel like all MM theories are almost equally unlikely, so if I have to pick one... I'm gonna pick the funniest one and continue my "beef" with Clockmakers lmao
Anyways, so remember those themes I'm pulling right out my ass and struggling to even pretend there's the slightest chance I'm actually right about them? How about we draw more probably wrong conclusions from them? Because if irreversibility is a main theme, then Vivi, who is interested in "conquering death", could fit well as a survivor. After all, you only get "one shot" at living, and she has to accept that, right...?
God I'm so bad at these.
Finally, Taylor.
I have no idea why Taylor's here.
It's sort of process of elimination, more than anything. I'm not confident about the rest of the kill order, but I feel I can't fill the fifth survivor spot (or fourth if you count the MM as separate) with any sort of actual reasoning, so... uh, I just picked my current favorite out of the characters I feel are most plausible as survivors. And that's Taylor, apparently.
Of course, the counterargument is that if they're already taking charge somewhat by proposing the breakfast meetup in the prologue, then that might not bode well for their survival and they might die soon. It's definitely decent reasoning, but... I mean, the story can go literally in any direction atp, so it's not impossible Taylor survives regardless. Just let me have the silly impressionist okay they're cool :p
Btw, funny thing about survivor predictions in this fangan. Usually a good way to build survivor predictions is by trying to balance the genders of the surviving cast, as generally there's a more or less equal split of girls and boys in the final trial, and thus remaining at the end. However, there are very few girls and boys in this killing game. In fact, no one in the surviving cast I predicted uses exclusively he/him or she/her pronouns. This isn't even the only configuration where this happens! Not even close! I find that amusing xD
Now that I've already probably gained no less than 25 points with these guesses alone, let's move on to the even harder part; death order!
Chapter 1: Vanessa - Robert
I chose Vanessa as the first victim because she is (I believe? more or less) the only character to have had, count them, three whole positive interactions with other characters on screen! Her chat with Ellis, giving Mark their name, and helping Taylor speak up at the end of the chapter. She's too nice, so she's dying. Immediately. Because she's one of the only people whose death could have a legitimate impact on the cast even this early, at least from what we've seen. Obviously I could be wrong but that's a given by now.
As for Robert, well look. I'm perfectly ready to be proven horrendously wrong about this, but I kinda struggle to see how his shtick of being perfectly normal could continue to be all that interesting post-CH1. It feels more like a gimmick you use for one chapter, then make Robert the killer to make the point that "if the most normal person here murdered someone, anyone could murder :O" and get paranoia going on the rest of the cast. Again, I'm probably completely wrong about that, but it's an angle I find plausible, so I'm picking it.
Robert's also like one of my top four picks for fifth survivor. Just so we're clear on how unsure about my guesses I am :v
Chapter 2: Harper - Cass
Harper and Noah met before the killing game. Even if they don't know much about each other's lives, they seem to be on pretty good terms. That means the pair probably isn't making it past CH2 lol.
Out of the two, I find Harper slightly more likely to be the CH2 victim. Vibes only on that one. I guess it makes sense in my mind that the Philanthropist is more likely to become more well-liked quicker than the Frat Boy, and as we've established, a character making friends is a good indication they might die, because their death might impact the cast more. Obviously with only the prologue, it's impossible to properly guess about any character dynamics beyond maybe CH1, but I try to pick my guesses with some amount of reasoning so.
As for Cass...
Listen I have no idea what to think of Cass. For some reason my mind comes up entirely blank when I think about predictions for them, or even when I try to think about anything about her character in general.
Why am I putting them here, then? Simply put, I could see them being an interesting foil to Harper, and it's not uncommon for character foils to kill each other in these killing games. Think Mondo - Chihiro, Ryoma - Kirumi, Kaito - Kokichi (now I'm listing them by first name because I hate consistency /j), just for some easy-to-see canon examples.
The foil here could potentially be that Cass might be (and just so we're clear on this, this is an immense extrapolation from like two lines of dialogue and could be horribly wrong) a more money-oriented person, based on these lines:
Cass [Prologue]: Lucky Student, huh? That’s an all-around useful talent. Still though, it’s weird… Why is no one here talented at making things, or having something to sell…? Ellis: Hey, who says I’m not talented at “making” something? Cass: I should clarify, I’m referring to making something physical. Something that one might, say, need someone to critique and/or help them market to higher ups
Cass [about the Customer Service Desk]: That can’t be a sound business practice…
While Harper is a Philanthropist whose likes include charities. So... boom. Foils.
Make no mistake. I doubt I'm cooking. I've probably overshot the kitchen and jumped directly into hell. Two or three lines are far from enough to properly guess what a character's deal is, especially when it's something so specific. This is not so much a genuine prediction and more so me grasping at straws to put Cass... somewhere and not have it be just up to the roll of the die. Unlike...
Chapter 3: Davis & Paris - Jeff
My CH3 guesses are nothing but Vibes Only hail maries. The reasoning here is that I don't know where else to put these people, so they're going here. I mean, putting them around the middle reduces the amounts of chapter points I can get from them under this scoring system, right? (<- Not actually the reasoning I used but y'know).
Davis, at least, has some form of... conflict? Thing? Going on from the very prologue, with him being clearly uncomfortable with Ellis' flirting and stuff. That could set up some form of early game character exploration, and that can imply an early-ish death after he gets explored. That or he survives. Uh... So he's going in CH3.
Jeff being a killer makes sense with him being the Ultimate Absentee, and thus wanting to leave. You could argue that might be too predictable, which- maybe, but that doesn't mean bad. The setup's there for him to not make it to the end... but still survive to see the pool open, since they were interested in it. So CH3.
Paris is here because I needed a second victim :v
Chapter 4: Noah - Aidan
It's not uncommon to guess that if one half of a pair dies, the other will survive, so you might think Noah as a survivor makes sense. And it does! But that reasoning didn't save Taka, so...
Again with these two, I am very unsure as to what exactly will happen with them. This, too, is a very Vibes only hail mary guess. I could see them going at practically any point past maybe CH1, but Aidan's probably gonna last for the sake of Conflict and... I don't know what to do about Noah so he's here :v
I can't even be sure about their roles! I could definitely see both of them as victims and killers, though I should note I think Noah being a killer is more likely if he dies before Harper, which is why I put Aidan as the killer for this prediction set.
Of course, this assumes Aidan can overcome his Contrarian urges to throw all weapons out the window when given the opportunity, but I believe in him! (/Slay the Princess ref).
Chapter 5: Kennedy - Antonia
You might think my confidence in guesses would go down as the chapters go up (barring Ellis and maybe Mark of course), as it's harder to predict things further down the road because of all the stuff that can happen in between the Prologue and the later chapters. And while that's generally true, Kennedy is actually one of the guesses I think is most defensible. Not necessarily more likely to be right, just easier to argue for.
I struggle to see her reaching CH6, since you'd probably want the protagonist to take center stage in uncovering all the mysteries behind the killing game, and having the Ultimate Conspiracy Theorist around could complicate that. However, if he reaches CH5, he can at least start uncovering the mysteries as a way to set up for CH6, and I can even see the angle of the MM specifically making a motive against them to get rid of them. That could even be the inciting incident for CH6, a la "Junko wrongfully 'executing' Naegi" (now I'm using both first and last names because I'm Evil) from THH.
However, a lot of that is probably the kind of bs Kennedy herself would say, and it's never a good sign when you start sounding like the Ultimate Conspiracy Theorist, so I'll leave it alone now.
Finally, Antonia...
Look, in my heart of hearts, I want her to be a survivor. I think it could work, especially with how intertwined her talent is with the setting and the protag's own talent. And in fact, those very reasons are the logical explanation of why she's this far in, all the way as the CH5 killer.
(The emotional explanation being that I just want her to last a while :v)
But... come on.
Ellis: … So, is there some kinda prize for winning? Other than our escape, I mean. Antonia: There must be. If it’s a “game,” there has to be an incentive to win.
It's the damn prologue and she's already considering prizes for murder honestly CH5 might be a little too optimistic T_T
---
Anyways, I hope this doesn't sound as completely unhinged as it reads in my mind lmao. And I also hope you enjoyed the objectively buckwild and most-likely wrong predictions, even if I'm probably going to end up with a ridiculous amounts of points at the end! See you!
