Moments that show Cass isn’t lost yet, part two

We see several moments of Varian getting to Cass during “Nothing Left to Lose.”

When Varian says “you lose your soul,” we see true concern that’s quickly dismissed.

When Varian grabs Cass’ hand, she doesn’t immediately pull away. Cass isn’t one for physical contact, so it’s notable that she doesn’t pull away until Varian call her a villain. She thinks he’s right. He’s so close to convincing her to give up this revenge.

Cass has to run away to escape Varian’s pleas. Her body language shows that she’s trying shut him out and convince herself he’s wrong.

Even as she ends the song, at the height of her power—in her own words, she has nothing left to lose—she’s not happy. She looks sad, uncertain, and concerned. She covers it with anger once again, but it’s not until we’ve panned out so far you barely see. She’s not happy. She regrets hurting Varian and breaking Rapunzel’s drawing.

Moments that show Cass isn’t lost yet, part one

We see the revelation of what she’s just done hit Cass here. She’s clearly in shock, uncertain of her choice.

All it takes is for Rapunzel to call her name and Cass stops right in her tracks.

Cass admits she might see things from Rapunzel’s POV.

Cass is open to Rapunzel until she says “just wait.” Cass has waited too long, as we know from Waiting in the Wings. She won’t wait any longer.

When the ghost girl tells her to destroy Rapunzel, Cass responds with shock and uncertainty, not anticipation or glee at getting revenge.

In fact, she responds with fear. Cass doesn’t want to destroy Rapunzel. She’s afraid.

When Cass senses Rapunzel, her reaction isn’t immediately anger.

Cass does this a lot—she covers her true emotions with anger, but you can see her insecurity, sadness, and fear come out first.
