#MapMondays! 1728 Plan Of The City Of New York This incredible map gives a great look into British New York, decades before the Revolutionary War. In 1664 Dutch Governor Peter Stuyvesant surrendered New Amsterdam to the British, who changed the city's name to New York after the Duke of York who organized the attack. The British removed the wall along Wall Street and expanded the city north and into the harbor via landfill. While many of the street names remain the same today, the British did rename many streets with names like Queen, Duke and Crown Street. British New York in 1674, ten years after Dutch Governor Peter Stuyvesant surrendered the city to the British. Following it's capture, New Amsterdam's name was changed to New York after the Duke of York who organized the attack.
