Good morning! I have been thinking about this a lot the past week, but do you have any thoughts about trains in SPN? Because in 11x04 I think there was the sound of trains in nearly every shot and I can't seem to figure out what it is supposed to mean. Thank you for your awesome metas and have a good day! :D

thanks for your message. There truly were a lot of train sounds in 11x04 “Baby”. I kind of think the sounds and the metaphors of trains do fit into a larger framedwork the show has been using repeatedly in S9 and S10. There are multiple different ways to analyze and read the train visual and sounds (as for example a metpahor for life as such, train tracks as a tool of orientation), but I’ll focus mostly on one that stood out most to me during the past couple of seasons and that is how the sound of trains relates to Dean’s MoC arc. I have been talking about these particular sounds as “evil little steam whistle” sounds which is what we hear building up almost every time that Dean loses himself to the influence and the powers of the mark. To me this sound indicated a sort of removal of Dean in “the here and now” to a somehwat different plane of “consciousness”. This commonly was also emphasized further by Dean’s million mile stare that captured rather well imo how Dean at that time was essentially not there. In this regard to me the “steam whistle”/train sound serves as a sort of bridge indicating a change and transformation happening between a journey from here to there so to say.
The train journey can be understood as a connecting element between two states. Take Harry Potter’s Hogwats Express or the Polar Express for example. Both vehicles indicate a removal from the real world to another one. In this case I find it very fitting to Supernatural since with the Moc and the train sounds one could see Dean being on a transformational journey, placing him somewhere between human and demon. This is also something one could see in other moments the show used train tracks. In 9x10 “Holy Terror” Cas called Dean standing next to train tracks indicating he’s just lived through a metamorphosis and transformation from human to angel again. Similarly in 8x04 “Bitten” the ending shot is of Kate walking along train track as new born werewolf.
In regard to 11x04 “Baby” in particular I found this sound particular reminsicent (as man shots too of the episode) of 10x23 “Brother’s Keeper” in which we have either the sound of bypassng car or train when Dean wakes up on the motel room floor - a time when Dean was almost entirely lost to the mark and the Darkness’ influence. I personally felt that 11x04 used these visual callbacks to show how Dean has changed from that moment to now. So in this regard the train sounds to me serve as reminders of Dean’s past.
This is sort of a bit of out of the box thinking, but when thinking about trains a bit more I had to remember the movie “Inception” which I sort of felt has been relevant to the narrative of SPN a few times over the past couple of seasons due to the aspect of perception and personal vs. objective truth and unrelaible narrators (those this particular aspect has been an integral part of the show right from the beginning). Trains and train metaphors play a really big role in that movie, because they are sort of connecting bits of real world and dream world. In order to wake up from their dream in the movie the main characters is talking about a train that takes one far away while putting his head on the track and in the end committing suicide in order to wake up in the real world cause one cannot die in his own dream (10x19 “The Werther Project” turned that assumption on the head btw and reverse mirrored the events of “Inception”). To save himself the main character (if I rmemeber correctly it’s been a while since I watched this film) has to go into limbo, whih is seen as a place for lost souls. You’re not awake, you’re not dead, you’re not fully aware you’re dreaming in said state. I find that very interesting to keep in mind when thinking about SPN (and the Empty) and all the plays with perception and visions and dreams that purposefully - just as in “Inception” are kept ambiguos. I am too tired to do a proper meta on how SPN and this film may compare and I’d also have to rewatch the film beforehand, so I’ll leave it at this. :)
So in the framework of all this said, I could imagine the train sounds may have been used a) to call back and compare the present with the past and b) may allude to not everything being the way it seems, meaning it’s kept vague when dream and visions starts and when they end.
I hope this made a little bit of sense to you. I’m sorry if this sucks, it’s been a long work day. As always just my two cents on the matter, there are tons of ways to analyze this. :)
