Summer Stars Shone Bright in Castlepollard
Children came from far and wide to take part in the Summer Reading Star promotion in Castlepollard Library this summer. While the staff, Nicola and Enda, are constantly involved in the promotion of Children’s reading the Summer Reading Star programme helps to involve families in a very special way.
Since June over 275 children in Castlepollard signed up to be part of the programme. Throughout the months of June, July and August the young readers in the Library were busy reading and filling up their Reading Challenge cards. Along the way they received various attractive incentives such as pencils, bookmarks, fridge-magnets and wrist bands all bearing the Summer Reading Stars logo, and there was a special weekly draw for all participants.
An awards ceremony was held in the library on Wednesday 27th September – in the morning classes from Castlepollard Parochial NS and Scoil Mhuire Coole came in to receive their medals and the other medals were awarded in the afternoon. In all over 170 children completed one or more reading cards.
The staff of Castlepollard Library were delighted with success of the Summer Reading Programme, This was Enda’s first year to be involved in the programme and she note how encouraging it was to see the children so committed to reading. Nicola also expressed her thanks to the parents, teachers and indeed everyone who supported the children and encouraged them to keep reading. The Library was thronged with enthusiastic children, parents and other family members for what was a very special day for all.
County Librarian Paula O’Dornan paid tribute to all the hardworking staff in Castlepollard who had made the Summer Reading Star programme such a success again this year. For those children who could not attend on the night their medals will be available in the library and can be collected during normal opening hours until the end of October.
