Casualties of Precision is curated by artist and ringleader, Carlos Mendieta, who selected the music of Bipolaroid and DJ set with Joel Gion of Brian Jonestown Massacre, for their raw power and driving chaotic cataclysm to create the mood for viewing Casualties of Precision. The five artists, view their collaboration of work as One Futile Quest for Perfection: Five Artists...Five Aesthetics....Five Experiences. "Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius -- and a lot of courage -- to move in the opposite direction." --Albert Einstein
Carlos Mendieta is a graphic artist who views his art as being, Awake.
The word ‘Awake’ not only alludes to the sensation of feeling alive, but it also a word that is composed of the three stages in an artist’s life…
Awake – Creative Awakening and/or Birth
A_wake – The work I create and leave behind, like the wake of a ship
A_wake – A Funeral/Death
My artwork is a dialogue with the audience, communicating what it feels like to be ‘Awake’ - and will provide me with a platform to continue that dialogue with future audiences long after I am gone."
Nick Parnell is a collage artist who views his work as puzzles composed of collections of images found from magazines, cereal boxes, junk mail mailers and found photographs. After being cut and torn out he can see how the
individual images are to be arranged into the final piece. This process of deconstruction and re- assembly into a new form is his driving force. He describes his style and technique as, "making possible the impossible
while tricking the eye into believing it's a single image. I search for balance and tension in each piece, then I consider it finished."
Huggington Behr is a self described paper artist/maker. He has been cutting paper for money since 2012. What really motivates him, though, is challenging the limits of what can be made from a single piece of paper. "While some wait for the Muse to come to them, I prefer to carve her from a dead tree with my own hands."
Lee Dotson is a graphic artist who views his personal style as the love child of all his driving forces for inspiration: horror movies, comic books and religion. He finds his muse in his delight of figures wrapped in flowing forms, be it cloth, bone, or muscular sinew. "I want the viewer to feel as though they've encountered the subject in a frozen moment that, for them, is defining; whether it be during a ritual or quiet contemplation".
Jacqueline Roche was born and raised in Western Massachusetts. She attended the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston, MA where she received the Departmental Award for Excellence in 2D Fine Arts. After graduating with a BFA in 2015, she moved across the country to New Orleans. In 2016 she joined the Breathing Waters artist collective in Arabi, LA where she continues to expand upon her studio practice. Her works are mainly focused in oil painting, though also include fiber arts such as knitting and embroidery as well as other various forms of sculpture. Ranging from abstract sculpture to figurative oil painting, Jacqueline has been using her work as a way to understand her most recent existential crisis. In her current series, Jacqueline explores the beauty in the necessity of mundane routine to the individual through detailed and colorful oil paintings.
Joel Gion is the tamborine man from The Brian Jonestown Massacre and he's about to release his second solo record, "Joel Gion" on Nov 17 and is the follow up to his first acclaimed record, "Apple Bonkers" Joel Gion himself is an element indefinable at his core, no matter how deeply one investigates either his mystery or his history (be it time spent with The Brian Jonestown Massacre, the celluloid anti-hero working out some kinks in the documentary “Dig!” or simply his repeat rankings in the ongoing competition for “Coolest Motherfucker on Earth”) Unraveling the history and mystery of rock and roll is half the fun, and Joel Gion has been responsible for far more than his fair share of fun. The other half of the fun is giving yourself over to that same mystery and history, wherever it may take you, definitions be damned. Ladies and gentlemen, Joel Gion is floating in space.
Bipolaroid- Emerging from the swampy depths of the Lousiana bayou, this New Orleans group plays delta psychedelic music influenced by Dr. John the Night Tripper to Syd Barrett/Pink Floyd and the 13th Floor Elevators, delivering odes to time machines, looking glasses, vampires, on both space rockers and more orchestrated pop-psychedelia. Bipolaroid will be playing an acoustic set for the art opening.
Join us for this Art & Music Happening, with Casualties of Precision: Group Art Show with live music with BiPolaroid & DJ Set with Joel Gion of Brian Jonestown Massacre, on Friday, October 13th @ 8
