I have seen some cute some fanarts and designs for Our flag means death centered around Frenchie’s cat flag and I noticed something strange, so I went back to check frame by frame.
Weird? Certainly, this show is eating too much of my time and attention. But I am also vindicated! You see, we have:
It’s tempting to say this is Black Pete’s design, since he is the first to defend it saying it’s from very tough pirates. But do we see Pete sewing? Not really, no. But we do see Lucius holding a piece of burlap.
Nothing definite, but if it helps write more fanfic, let’s take it.
This is the Swede’s work, which he defends before officer Hornberry. We also see a bit of the skull near the Swede’s knee when they are working. Lovely patchwork there, by the way.
Skull vomiting buttons unto a skeleton
We all want to say it’s Buttons’ flag, but Buttons is busy with some rope and with telling Stede about the mutiny a-’brewing. He doesn’t participate in the activity. I think it’s Roach’s because it’s the only flag with a dark background and we see him hold a similar fabric. Also notice that the skull’s teeth are made of mother-of-pearl buttons.
Black cat licking its paw
Lovely. We see Frenchie sewing it and later defending it, as one should. Later this flag is used to make the mannequins and it’s presented to King George as proof of the pirate’s brutality.
But then! Oh, oh, at the end of the first episode we get a lovely shot of all the flags being flied and… what’s this?
A totally different cat flag! Stretching cat flag!
Whose flag is this? Were they convinced by Frenchie’s very sage, very scientific arguments, so they sewed this one? Or did they arrive to that idea on their own? Did Frenchie sew a second one after they lost his first? Is it Wee John’s? Jim’s?
