May I please discuss something with you that has been bothering me ever since the Cat-tastrophe special?

In the special when Mayor Humdinger meets Purrcy, he reacts via "A talking cat!" with surprise and some confusion since his cats don't talk to him; and Purrcy responds with "All cats can talk" in his own manner of confussion like it is something super obvious and well known.

and this confuses me because:

Callie, is Katie's cat, and she never speaks????

in the Paw Patrol Mighty Movie (theatrical release) one of the crystals from the meteorite lands on one of Humdingers kitties (the Zuma one I believe???) and he reacts "Oh wow, I can speak! ! I have so much to say!!!!" before the crystal is taking from him and .......and ........

I'm just so confused now on if cats are supposed to talk or not

But I swear there are three different versions of Paw Patorl: the series, the specials and the films and non of the info from the three necessarily crossover. Like their there own things. Maybe? I don't know.........

Ah, the classic confusion about the cats in PAW Patrol, why some can talk, why some don't, and why people still get surprised despite having seen talking cats before...

Yes, you are right on feeling confused about it. Every show that's supposed to go on for some time has some kind of "golden rules", or even a "bible" if you will. It's a bunch of rules that's there for the writers, artists, etc, to follow. These rules will prevent inconsistencies, continuity fails/breaks, or mischaracterization. What we've been seeing and noticing for some time now, for a few years even, is that these supposed rules have been being literally disregarded a lot of times within the show.

About the cats: YEAH. They were supposed to NOT TALK. At least in the beginning, the pups were the ONLY animals with human-like speech ability. Other animals would make their own sounds and we only know they have a higher level of intelligence because Marshall can understand/translate what they say. Still, no human-like speech ability.

So, we have Cali, a cat who can't talk.

Then, we have Humdinger's kittens, also not talking.

We also have the royal kittens, no talk.

Then we got the Copycat, who can talk only because of a meteor piece/fragment stuck on his teeth, granting him the ability to talk and several powers. That was ONE talking cat which got explained why he could talk.

And then...

Suddenly Wildcat showed up for the Moto Pups subseries. And Wildcat can talk. Just like that. No explanation whatsoever, he just can. And everyone rolls along with it, pun intended and not intended at all.

Later, we also have Wild's friends, Rory, Leo and Shade. Three other talking cats. Again, no explanation.

But hey, then we also had the movies... With Humdinger's kittens not talking... And that one crystal incident which you mentioned...

And then, Purrcy. Who, WOW, WHAT A SURPRISE, HE CAN TALK-

At this point, we know the bible is just for decoration purposes as they're not following it. And yeah, the show and the movies are different verses, with how they simply rewrote the whole meteor + powers incident as if the previous subseries hadn't existed at all (RIP Tuck & Ella).

What I can say about the whole thing is that Humdinger's kittens' reaction is what answers your question. Purrcy said all cats can talk and the kittens immediately reacted by signaling him to shut the hell up. The kittens PREFER to pretend to not talk. Can you imagine how much more of a hell their "good life" would be if Humdinger would have them talking back? It would be SO OVER. They prefer to not "engage" with Humdinger at all, they're there because they love the chaos Humdinger causes.

"What about Cali, then?"

Yeah, the only thing I can imagine for her and the royal kittens is that they just don't want to talk, or they were never interested in learning to reproduce human speech, despite being able to. They were never supposed to talk in the beginning, but if we must headcanon now about it, then I imagine they have that "superiority" complex people often give cats, that they're above humans and are only around for the convenience of food, shelter, and in some cases, cuddles. Not all cats are all lovely. If we follow this stereotype, it makes sense why Cali & cia aren't interested in talking with humans, or worse, ewwww, dogs. The pups are always doing everything for the humans instead of minding their own lives.

We see Cali often ignores everyone and acts/behaves in her own favor too, so...

TL;DR - From my personal understanding, Cali and Royal kittens either don't want to talk because they're not interested/they feel above everyone else, or they were never interested in learning human speech despite being able to. Humdinger's kittens are able to talk and actively chose not to, for their own convenience - Humdinger would make their lives hell if they'd start talking and they know it. Other cats who have nothing to lose on learning/using human speech (Wild & Cat Pack, Purrcy) will freely learn and talk as they wish.

How well known are you guys? You'd think a team of talking rescue pups lead by a 10-year old would be world famous, but there do seem to be people who don't know about you guys, like that truck driver carrying maple syrup you guys saved.

Another thing, how common are talking pets? When Mayor Humdinger first met the Copy Cat, he was surprised he could talk (although it was b/c the meteor, idk if he knew that though), but then there's cats like Wild who can talk normally.

(Note that's not really part of the rp: My Paw Patrol knowledge is a bit rusty with the last few seasons so sorry if my questions contradict the cannon or anything)

No, wait, that's actually a good question. Have we ever had something like a popularity poll or whatever?

Not in this context, I think. The ones I've seen were mostly "Who's your favorite pup from the Paw Patrol" kinda thing, not "Do you know about the Paw Patrol".

I know we're famous around here, but not really ALL over the world yet. Barkingburg doesn't count, the Princess loves pups, that's how she found out about us and became a Chase fan. As for the cats... Yeah, that's... Complicated.

Cali and Mayor Humdinger's kittens never talked, Copycat uses a piece of our meteor for that, Wild and his friends were always able to talk. We have different cases here, lots of theories...

Yeah, there seem to have a few cats who are perfectly able to talk like us, and some who can't talk. We're not really sure why, though.

2015-2024 Pretty happy how the new one turned out. Keeping the very simple style while updating them was a lot of fun. I think the orange tabby ended up being my favourite of this bunch.

Season 9′s “Pups Meet the Cat Pack”!

Despite those shorts airing early, we’re finally given a proper introduction to the the Cat Pack. Though these felines were in the spotlight the most, all of the pups fortunately got some screen time alongside them. Although Marshall wasn’t given too much, he still managed to get some cute scenes here and there, including one with Wild that I had to include as a GIF!

(In case anyone’s still confused, that is indeed Wild Cat from Moto Pups. Sadly, they don’t explain why he now only goes by “Wild”, or why he suddenly looks so different.)
