(I meant to do one of these a few weeks ago, but... I forgot. 😅)
As some of you might've noticed, Sunday's Daily Marshall contained a video game console. Something similar to it appeared back in season 4, too. To some of us, it looked somewhat similar to a certain older console that was made by Nintendo. Which one?
This is the console Nintendo released after their Super Nintendo (SNES), and although it wasn't as successful, it's still fondly remember by many to this very day.
The Nintendo 64 used cartridges for its games, and you can see many of the ones I own in the picture above! Unless I'm mistaken, this was the only console (at the time) to continue using them, as most others, such as the Sony PlayStation and the Sega Saturn, had moved on to CDs. Discs were not only cheaper to make, they could hold a lot more data, too (700mb for CDs, 8mb to 64mb for the N64's cartridges). This ended up hurting the Nintendo 64 in the long run, although it didn't stop it from getting some great games!
Nowadays, it's seen as a bit of a blessing, since cartridges tend to last longer than CDs. I've had a few discs of mine go bad, yet all of my Nintendo 64 cartridges are still going strong!
The Nintendo 64 also used a... rather unique controller. Some love it, while others seen it as yet another mistake. Odd shape aside, it was still innovative at the time, due to it introducing an analogue stick, which granted full 360 degrees of movement in 3D environments (as opposed to the common dpad, which was limited to only eight directions). This was such a game changer, every other console developer adopted the idea into their own controllers, and now it's an industry standard! Nintendo may not have been the first to create one, but the Nintendo 64 made it mainstream!
Of course, some of you might own a wireless version of this controller for the Nintendo Switch, if you were able to get one off of Nintendo's site before they sold out. Sadly, I was not among the lucky ones.
To wrap this up, here's a few other bits of trivia.
It released in both Japan and North America in 1996.
At the time, controllers weren't wireless, so you needed to connect them into a controller port. Most consoles only had two, but the Nintendo 64 had four! For multiplayer games, this was a blessing.
The Nintendo 64 had two rivals, and although it sold better than the Sega Saturn, the Sony PlayStation outsold them both (by a lot).
It's the original home of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, which, to some, is still seen as one of the greatest games of all time! (Personally, I like The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask more. 🤫)
The Nintendo 64 had a disc drive add-on (the "64DD"), but only in Japan. Sadly, it sold poorly and was discontinued rather fast.
