you’re probably aware of the xkcd strip which suggests that level of intelligence drops as proximity to a cat increases (and if not, hey, welcome to today’s lucky 10,000!)

but i would like to propose an alternative:

what dictates how cuteness (including but certainly not limited to that of cats) affects one’s intelligence isn’t how close the source of said cuteness is, but how much attention you’re paying to it

thus, a cat that’s playing on the far side of the room, but that you are watching closely, will affect you more than the cat sitting by your feet who you’ve practically forgotten about

(this revelation brought to you by my spending a significant amount of time laying next to my dog, unaffected by her cuteness, but the moment i started paying attention to her, my speech devolved into variations of “you are a baby and you are a dog and my dog is a baby”)
