Our dear cat Leo used to be an outside cat, and he misses it terribly. When the sun goes down, he cries piteously to go out.

But he can't go. We live right by a freeway. We are near enough to wilderness that coyotes and other predators make a good living eating outside cats. We keep Leo inside and commiserate with him.

Recently, I discovered that if I sing to him, he stops crying and seems to feel better. So I have been remembering all the old songs I used to sing.

My husband, Marc, has started also singing to the cat, remembering his own old songs. When we both know the same one, we sing together, in harmony, if we know the parts.

I'm sorry, Leo. But thank you, little guy. You gave us back something precious.
