[Hey petblr and catblr, I don't know shit about judging cat weight. I can do dogs fairly well because I have more experience with them and there's generally more info on weight scales for dogs than cats.

My last cat was obese most of his life. (Until he had thyroid problems and then couldn't keep weight on.) My grandma's deceased cat and current cat are what I'd consider almost morbidly obese. I don't want that to happen with my current cat. I wanna keep him nice and lean at an ideal weight.

He's almost 11 months so I know he's still filling out but lately I've started to worry, especially with how many treats my mom gives him everyday. And I'm trying to convince her to get him a companion cause when he's around my grandma's cat he's desperate to play with her, despite her hissing and snarling at him. So I wanna be better at judging cat weight period.

Another cat BCS question, what about my new siamese kittens? Theyre so weird and long I know if they look too much like normal cats theyre obese. Do you have any BCS tips for my bony leggy children? (I asked my vet and feel pretty confident in my own assessment but nervous new kitty owner)

how do i know if i'm feeding my cat enough/too much? she's kinda greedy and always acts like she's dying of hunger so i don't know if i'm actually giving her enough or she's just faking it. she seems average size to me but she has something that looks like flab??? hanging down from her belly. but when i pet her i can feel her shoulder blades quite prominently :\

Cats are pretty good at faking it, lol! Your best resource is to ask your vet, honestly. If she's due for a wellness or anything like that, you could take her for a quick check up & ask for an opinion on her body condition and discuss your feeding schedule for her. You could also just try calling and asking if you can bring her in for a quick weight consult to make sure everything is okay & get some more guidance on feeding amounts. I don't have a body condition chart that I know is for sure a good one, and I'm not sure if there are ones that are better than others, tbh. Sometimes they can be hard to use for judging with cats that have different body shapes. I do know that a general rule of thumb is whether you can feel their ribs or not, with just a bit of fat over them.The belly flab thing is normal! how do you determine a cat's ideal weight if they're not of any particular breed / mixed? is it an individual basis discussed with your vet? 'cause like some cats look really bony but are normal weight, while others look beefy but are also normal. is it determined by their length and height? and I think I once heard about cat BMI... the human BMI is bs so is the cat one too?

Howdy anon! Working out an ideal cat weight can be a bit difficult, I have two moggies in my house with very different body types! There’s a couple of posts the doc has made previously about looking at a cat’s weight:Body types are definitely a thing!And some about the risks of a cat being overweightWhat is used for cats is a body condition score, rather than a BMI (which is just a metric of height vs weight). This involves looking at the actual shape of the cat, how much muscle it has, and how much fat it is carrying. The Doc talks here a little about why we don’t use weights for cats, even by breedAnd a bit more hereThere is intentionally some flexibility in this, and I would recommend asking your vet to do a body condition score when you go in! (many vets in my area will actually do weigh in appointments like this for free, and it gives the cat nice positive treats + no one checking their temperature with a stick up the butt appointment). They are likely doing it anyway when they give the cat a checkup as well, but they can let you know so you have a better idea of where you are sitting and some idea of what to look out for. - Mod @perijules

Sorry to I've been so bad at updates!

I have a huge application I've been working on and to motivate myself, I haven't been on any social sites or gaming until it's turned in.

However! I had a kitty weigh-in day today so I thought you would all might be interested (even if you haven't met some of them yet). Their weights can give you an idea of their sizes😊

When I turn in my application this week, I'll give you two kitty profiles this upcoming weekend to make up for posting so slow the past several weeks.

Belladonna: 9.6 lbs

Bilbo: 13.2 lbs

Pippin: 7.8 lbs

Bagheera: 11.4 lbs

How big are your kitties? In terms of weight, that is. Just a point of curiosity.

Blake is our heavy weight champion with somewhere between 7 to 7.5kg (for a male Maine Coon it’s actually not that much :P). 

Then we have Faolan with 4.5 kg and Sambucca is the lightest, she’s around 3.8kg I think. :)
