The gene research for choosing your pet is really important indeed. Lots of people go for an aesthetically pleasing pet but forget the consequences these characteristics have. I really want a corgi or a dachshund but I'm afraid they'll have a lot of problems when growing older because of their weird spine shape. I hope more people will start to look into genes, which will automatically change how dogs are bred (to please the demand).
Yup pretty much. It’s not just the fact that by buying such a pet you’re actively supporting the breeding of animals with predispositions to severe conditions and illnesses. It’s also the fact that you will have to go to the vet and pay a lot of money for the necessary procedures if you care about said animal’s wellbeing and quality of life. It’s often only at that stage people actually realize the consequences of their decisions. And don’t get me wrong I understand people wanting a certain breed because it’s cute or because it fits their lifestyle pretty well or any other aesthetic reason and I also understand the tendency to believe that “if you go to a responsible breeder it’ll be alright” even though that’s not always (read: almost never) true. So you’re right, people need to actively do their own research and/or ask their vet about these kind of things in order to make a responsible choice
sleeping lynx cub by Cloudtail the Snow Leopard Via Flickr: A picture from a sleeping lynx cub. It sleeps in his mother's flank. I really like this scene.
