Our call time for today’s shoot at the Kumeu film set was 4.30am. Make-up and costuming commenced immediately and after breakfast prepared by the wonderful Doof Doof Film Production Catering, we “merchants” were on the market set. Today’s shoot was to re-create an opening busy market scene shot from cameras mounted high up on the ramparts. As there are over 50 merchants, each one has to be assigned tasks; mine was to sell colourful fans mounted on a pole and small bales of silk. The setup took the longest time but after 8 takes, it was all over. Uncle decided to de-camp to Hobsonville Point from Kumeu, 15 minutes away. Here, Fabric Cafe & Bistro sits on the waters edge of Catalina Bay. What a wonderful transformation Luke & Melissa Shore have done to this spot. Uncle barely had time to take in the surrounds and menu when in sweeps Paula Bennett, resplendent in her 2-colour deep lilac and hint of apricot ensemble. Even her killer shoes matched the light apricot of her top. And she had to sit at the next table, on the same side of the cushioned seating bench. She brought her Mum in for coffee, scone and chinwag. Uncle couldn’t concentrate on his Spanish cheese frittata with spinach, potato, tomato, topped with rocket and pine nuts. Having worked with Felicity Ferret at Metro, Uncle will say nothing about what he heard, pretending to be unable to speak and understand Kiwi-speak.
